I hope Twomey is right. Better mix of inside & out, gets plenty of it & appears to be a nice user of the ball. Just how many insiders do we need?

Never understood why people get so hung up on one player.

Robertson also offers pace and would complement some of our bigger bodied mids. Is also a strong leader. Does Schoenberg offer much more than what say Mitch Hinge brings?

It’s because we don’t know. Port may not want the player we do. But other clubs may want that player. So Port trades with the other club, the other club take the player we want. Port get the player they want (as he wasn’t in the sights of the third club or us) we then take the next best available. We did the trade to ensure Port ain’t trade that pick to another club, thus we ensure we don’t lose the player we want to the third club.

This is like groundhog day

Either way, the club rates whoever it is extremely highly. I trust the recruiting teams judgement and will be happy with Robertson or Schoenberg. IMO the last few years have been spot on and I'm sure they will be again with tonight's selections.

On purely picks it's a dreadful move:
Pick 23 + Future Second Rounder for Pick 22 + Future Fourth Rounder ain't swell when addressed like that.

Of course the 2nd rounder is tied to Collingwood, so it's more likely to be a pick in high 30s rather than a low 20s pick.

*But* all the above is irrelevant. It is a pick swap done purely with a specific player in mind. So the value of such a deal is going to completely come down to the player naturally. We haven't exactly sold the world, Club has enough credit in the bank with these decisions, so an easy call to back them in on.

Alternatively nothing stopping us from further on trading for a better deal either with 2020 in mind.

Thinking that too, someone may offer us a 2020 first.
Then it would be straight to the port board for hours of entertainment [emoji16]

I'm guessing it will be Robertson as they probably are looking at this trade as swapping 2nd for 4th but getting a pick 7 - 13 player for it

We must be trading up to make sure we get Rivers or Robertson and we were worried that Port may take him........ then why would Port do the trade? Why wouldn't Port just take the player they want if we want him as well?

I can't get my head around it, Please Explain!
Other clubs might be keen on the player we want. They made offers to get ports pick and we have to pay up to beat them.

Perhaps not the way to view it but i'm slightly annoyed that we've had to trade up to get that pick. If it weren't for the absolute haul of draft picks given to the gold coast we would have already been in that position.

If the Schonberg rumour is right we may have had to deal to stop Adelaide pouncing.

It'll be interesting to see just how highly we rated Schoenberg (if of course it is him) in comparison to other clubs.

Clearly, there were a lot of other clubs who didn't rate him in the first round last night, but we must've had him pretty high to pay up the way we did.

If not, then so what if the Crows paid up? We apparently had quite a few others we rated quite highly anyway so to pay up the way we did, just to move up the one spot, then we must've rated whoever it is a lot higher than the rest.

Happy if it is Schoenberg.
Had him grouped with Rantall, Perez & Park as my next best available (for us).

Twomey has confirmed it was Adelaide that was trying to deal for Ports pick, and they were interested in Schoenberg also.

That being the case, and he was who we wanted, then you just do what you have to to get him.

(If you don't concur, then read Michael Lombardi's book on how you draft and build a list).

Trade looks incredibly unbalanced. Port make out very well out of it.

BUT

At this late stage, I don't think it's right to judge draft pick against draft pick - much more like we've traded for a player. If the recruiters judge that the price paid is worth that player, well then... That's why they paid for it. As for whether that was necessary? No idea. Depends who else was in the running.
