Disagree with some posters about lack of midfielders top 10 is full of them

Lack of midfielders that suit our needs around our probable pick of 3-5 outside of rowel Anderson and kemp there’s not much I’d argue that suit our needs. There are some absolute jets though

A very good one, potential top three but plays best off half back.... plays mid as well though. A mass accumulator and distributor.

Who do you like around that mark? After today’s loss it’s more probably we have a pick between 3-5. Serong and Flanders I don’t see us taking that high, rowel and Anderson are probably gone, maybe we make a bid for green? Then that leaves us between ash young and kemp at this stage. I don’t think Stephens is top5 talent either.

After doing the predictor, being fair in all. I have the last game, if we beat sydney, 14th if we lose 16th. Whatever it ends up being, it’s a high pick. Some good mids starting to jump out through the carnival. Happy days.

Here are the maths.
I’ve thrown in Hately as well.

Jye Caldwell #11 (2018), points = 1,329
Aiden Bonar #11 (2017), points = 1,329
Jackson Hately #14, (2018), points = 1,161

Assumed:
Pick #5 (2019), points = 1,878, St Kilda
Pick #16 (2019), points = 1,067, GWS (as a FYI)
Pick #23 (2020), points = 815, St Kilda
Pick #34 (2020), points = 542, GWS

Provided there is not someone they absolutely want at #5, or they reap some benefit by gaining an Academy gun at a cheaper pick (#16), why would GWS do this deal?

Simply on a points basis:

Caldwell & Bonar = 2,658 or
Caldwell & Hately = 2,490

Both 600-800 more than the value of our pick #5.
Even if we add in our 2020 Future 2nd to close the deal, or a 2020 Future 2nd swap, it still means we’re about line ball points wise.

So what incentive is there for GWS to agree?

I just cannot see this deal happening.

Disclaimer: GWS’d agree if either, both or all of Caldwell/Bonar/Hately are duds.

PS: I don’t have an issue with chasing Caldwell given we were prepared to offer Adelaide our 2019 1st last year in order to get him. So clearly we rate him.

With the likelihood of two premature retirements, we have added stress on the list.
Any strategy that can get us multiples of talent given finite resources (picks) is worth investigating.
So getting 2 x 1st picks out of the one we have is a reasonable strategy, particularly as we would have swapped the one pick for the one player last year.
And enticing.
I liked it when I read it here earlier too.
Then I did the math and that little bubble burst.

DPS has a recent mock draft up that has us taking Lachie Ash. Ash look like a ripping kid, but I think our fan base would burn the joint down if we took another back flanker.

If it fell that way I'd prefer we go for Serong. Amazed to see Robertson still not rated top 10 after his champs. I really like Stephen's but he didn't have a massive champs.

If that’s how it fell it would be a tough decision. Ash looks a complete gun and with his speed could probably be used anywhere re nick hind. Serong is good but will play his first 5 years as a forward, will probably allow gresh to play permanent midfield.. at 178 and not overly quick he’s not exactly a need for our midfield.. kemp is ideal

For sure. DPS doesn't factor in where they might be bidded on at this stage, he just puts it down at the next pick. It'll definitely be top 5 though, probably higher.

Say we have pick 3. Rowell and Anderson at 1 and 2

We say to GWS we will bid on Green with 3 unless they give us Hopper and pick 9.

They lose Hopper but get to bid on a nice kid at 3 and still get Green
