most juniors will spend time in the midfield, because they're that good. they're at the elite end of the talent pool.

for example our own brown dominated as a junior in the midfield. now would you ever say he would be a mid at AFL level, of course not.

so you can't have a blanket rule that states because a junior played midfield means they will transition to the midfield at the highest level. which is why champs form takes precedence.
Yes, both Coffield and Clarke played mainly as half back flankers in TAC.. the difference is Clarke played as fulltime mid in his last TAC year.. can find the ball; weave through the traffic like Dal Santo; has unbelievable hands and composure, also loves tackling.. whereas Coffield has not demonstrated any of these qualities yet.. However, if he can be a damaging intercept HB like Easton Wood, he will be just as valuable with his kicking and line-breaking.

didnt coff play in the midfield in the champs at times. i specifically remember him playing as an inside mid at times against wa here at subi oval

Clark’s hands have been really impressive. The goal he kicked out of the pack against the Bulldogs was a perfect example.

He not only manages to catch the ball in one hand, but has such a good feel for it that he can get off an effective kick or handball in the time that most other players are still gathering the ball. When you combine this with his very high quality disposal, it’s quite the weapon.

It was this skill that was prominent in his draft year, but had (until the last ~month) been elusive at senior level. Something has clicked, and clicked fast - perhaps he wasn’t backing himself in, as I can’t think of many other ways such a steep improvement would be forthcoming.

I’m hoping Clark’s hot form will inspire Coffield and trigger a similar revelation shortly. We have seen how elusive he can be with good lateral movement, spatial awareness, and quick first few steps - it’s just a matter of Nick using these skills. That and his kicking - he has a very powerful and penetrating kick, but seems a bit gun shy at the moment.

I think he got thrown around the ground a lot that season.. where ever they needed him.. even forward, but still played half back majority of the time.

Totally agree re Clark. Ball handling ability (for lack of a better term) is a crucial skill and Clark seems to be better at it than most. It's one of the reasons I think he will become elite.

I think it's best described as the time taken between the ball being uncontrolled (i.e. the very first touch) to it being in control (i.e. in a position to effectively kick or handball). A difference of milliseconds can make all the difference between whether (a) you hit that player streaming past you at pace (b) you can collect without breaking stride (c) you can release to a teammate before be pinged HTB.

Fair chance we do some trading before the draft.

I seriously doubt we have player we can afford to lose who gets us a top 20 pick though. Might get back into the late second round or something unless Stuv or Carlisle want out.

I hope Coffiled keeps improving, he looked a long way off early in the year but is coming home strong. He's got the best hair at the club, should be made captain on that alone. Hopefully he can play midfield longer term, a big bull in the mids would be nice.
Slowly improving with every game. Hopefully he has the same realisation Hunter had a few weeks ago and it all suddenly clicks for him.

Are you implying that I prioritise hair over footballing ability?

As you should, those other ****ers do the 80s Leb hair but Coff looks like he's straight out of Chasers in 1989. He does it properly afro-mullet with slash cut sides, super nice.

Gotta agree with this as there were far too many short dinky sideways kicks by Coff on the weekend

He has a great leg and he should be encouraged use it long with pinpoint accuracy to open up the opposition

He is one player that has the skills and ability to take the game on either by run or by kicking

Gonna be really interesting if we go on a tear in the next 5 weeks and jump up the ladder should we entertain moving back and picking up assets?

I would not entertain moving back if we got a top 5 pick unless something really good came our way.

Melbourne
Adelaide
Fremantle
Carlton
Sydney

Could be 4 wins there which would put us on 44pts and probably anywhere between 10 to 12 on the ladder

So pick 7 to 9

Not that we would entertain playing for draft picks, but ending the season with momentum is far more important to our off-season acquisitions than moving a couple of spots down the draft order.

Way to miss my point.

Again.

Contrary for the sake of it.

Again.

Which Brown? Nate? Reckon he may have been a key position player most his junior rep career.

I don’t think it’s a realisation as such, just game time experience. Pace of the game, confidence that he belongs at the highest level & he’ll be away.

Coff has shown enough in his very short career to suggest he’ll be a very good player. How good he can become is the question.
