Was just about to post something similar.

Let's say for one second that the AFL let us trade our 2020 1st for one this year.....

Even then, the only clubs who would do it would be those who gain an advantage from the pick swap. Most pundits would have us getting a top 10 pick next year. So only a club with a pick between 11 and 18 would even entertain it without significant sweeteners which we don't have. Those with F/S or academy picks would look to use later picks.

I don't see the benefit in trading next year's first for a pick between 11 and 18 this year unless they think this year is so much better than next year... and again no club would trade themselves out of this year if that's the case.

We have had a good period. Let's just be happy with that

I’m on the opposite side of the fence, but I can see where you’re coming from and maybe it isn’t a bad time to stay at 51.

I'm not so sure that's the case.

Some clubs will be looking for more 1st round picks for the same reasons that GWS swapped with us this year.

I could easily see us trading with the likes of Geelong for our future 1st, 51, future 4th.
Getting back a 1st, future 2nd, future 3rd.

It's a very fluid situation. Who's left available in the draft, and who could we trade with, and are we saving it for Bing still, or is it there for the spending.
We'll only find out on the night..

So whats going on??

This biggy guy are we getting him for sure??

Stephens, Sharp or dow?
Midfielders any chance?
Would we want to trade future 1st for them and a future second?

I think we need to get in a young midfielder. any of those would do.

Desperately need a young ruck and mids.

Unless someone puts an insane crazy early pick on Biggy ( top 30 ) we will get him

No chance on Stephens , Sharp , or Dow.

There is a guy Zac Pretty, who was off the radar as an under 17 but had a great 2019. I wondered if he might be a value pick at 51.
Otherwise there are a few 19-22 year olds playing state footy who have never had a chance.

Any Round 1 pick from 2020 would only be traded at a huge discount.

Reason being is there are almost twenty likely FS and Academy picks next year. Quite a number will go first round.

Even in a good tear next year picks are discounted by say 20% of their value, and may be more due to risk.

But with all those players to be bid a Pick 8 may slide to a Pick 18.

Now a club with some good F/S or Academy picks may fancy our first pick next year, but I cannot see any club giving us a good deal for it. And then if we slide it would hurt like hell next year having swapped say pick 17 for pick 1/2.

Also trading our first rounder makes it harder to trade fora good player in 2020.

With Bytel and King to be blooded in 2020, and Clark, Coffield and Battle all deserving of more gametime in the seniors already I just do not see the urgency of gaining an earlier pick in the 2020 draft when tradewise we will have to pay overs to get it.

Its amazing how everyone wanted us to get these trades done. Then yaaay we got the trades.
Then....OK draft time....waaaaa we aren't in it.

What's going on? We're just going to have to sit tight.
I agree we need another young mid, and a ruck. But where does Bing sit now? And who else are we targeting next year?

The fun is in speculating but we've got nothing to go on and the options are too many. But why were we so intent to hold our future 1st in a bastardized draft that many don't rate?

Why were you so intent to piss it away for?

I hate future tradiing, our club is doing what i speculated all the dumb clubs would do, trading our draft away the year before , so we get to the draft and we only have one decent pick, every bloody year.

I definitely don't want it pissed away, but l see two scenarios.

1. It's already allocated for Bing or something else and we'll just suck it up for this draft, taking Biggy and up grading a rookie and hoping to use 51 before a bid comes.

2. It's basically play money.
If so then we're better to grab someone we rate this year for age demographics only. I think being opportunistic whilst knowing we don't need to use it would be the approach.

OK at the end of next season we could end up in 6th spot, or we could end up 12th.

Starting point for a team trading with us would be that our future pick is worth no more than pick 15 or so.
Then there is motivation to do the trade.
Why would you trade pick 15 this year for pick 15 next year?
You wouldn't.
You might trade pick 20 this year for pick 15 next year, but probably less.

Then , because we have no other picks next year to speak of , we need to go hat in hand to the AFL to let them let us trade both our future picks.

Uhhh Gill we want to trade our first rounder next year for one this year cosssss....stuff.
Gill says: well derp, i'm not so bright , but i think we put that rule in place for loser clubs like StKilda trading themselves into a black hole with no way out.

a) clubs won't want our future first for the "steak knives" we have to offer.
b) we have no valid reason to give the AFL for why we want to do it.

It's a pretty ordinary draft though and very compromised. It will be like a second round pick this year. It won't be easy to find a gun. I would have rather kept a pick in this years first round.

you won't be saying that if we use it to land Bing next year (after he kicks his first ton)

What about a future 1st for picks 15 and 20 from the suns? They could use all the picks they could get?

Use
15: Bianco
20: Rivers
51: Garcia
Pick 82/Rookie: Biggy
Rookie: Partington

They would need to be total idiots to do that.
And they probably have a few Academy kids next draft , meaning they won't care what early picks they have.
Just stop it , its not happening its stupid and annoying now.

A team that wanted to trade wouldn't give us pick 15 on its own, let alone 15 and 20.
I'm feeling embarrassed for you .

I can see our drongo selectors letting Biggy slip by. 196cm, fastest kid in the combines,a few other clubs would have their eye on him.

We won't choose where Biggy goes in the draft.

If someone bids we will match it with our next pick.
If no-one bids we will rookie him.

His brother had amazing physical ability but was hopeless at footy and bad attitude on and off the field .
Hopefully Biggy , who played footy from a younger age, is a lot better.

I'm not buying the entire next year's crop is compromised thing.
The issue was raised by David King, mathematical genius.

Its compromised but.....
The clubs don't get extra picks , they get the player first.

17 of the 48 all stars players are academy players. 31 were not.
So long as they are bid on appropriately, the system will be.

Carlton (spooners ) bid on Brisbane player, Brisbane match First Pick Brisbane
Carlton bid on Suns player , Suns match... Second pick suns.
Carlton grumble and pick one of the 31 non academy players. 3rnd pick carlton
Suns finished 2nd bottom. But already used their first round pick. so the next club get to take the 4th pick.

If there are 5 academy player deserving a first round selection and all 5 are bid on, then StKilda's pick 18 will still be pick 18
If no-one bids, for example the suns bottom out so no-one can bid on their guy, they pick the best of 31 non academy players and won't need a first rounder for their guy.

Its still way better to have a first round pick than a late pick, which will be really compromised.

The good news is it seems like a lot of clubs aren't planning on using some of their late picks, so our picks should move forward in the queue quite considerably, as much as 10 places maybe in the case of the final pick.

The bad news may be that there's a reason that so many clubs are opting out of those late picks. If it's that they don't have the room for more players, then fine, but if it's that they see nothing of value that far down the draft, well then it's going to be the same for us, whether it's pick 92 or 82.

:) I see what you've done there - and I like it :)

A lot of people here are going to be disappointed when we don't get a player from all the " top draft picks 2019 " media releases.

I already am. Lachie Ash, Robertson and Flanders and a few others look like my kind of players.

Yeah Gringo, but i think you at least realised it during trade period.
There are a few here who think we will magically be able to land one of them, by trading our future first or something.
I'd kind of hoped that we'd at least get a 2nd and try to get Byrnes if we couldn't get Robertson.

I think Devon Roberston will go early, I heard that Melbourne are considering going after the WA ruckman who's name has just escaped my memory right now. He looks a gun but if there is any side that doesn't need to take a risk on a ruck it's the Dees. They have Pruess to take over once Gawn is gone.
