I think Devon Roberston will go early, I heard that Melbourne are considering going after the WA ruckman who's name has just escaped my memory right now. He looks a gun but if there is any side that doesn't need to take a risk on a ruck it's the Dees. They have Pruess to take over once Gawn is gone.

That'd be Luke Jackson i guess.
Switching from basketball he probably has a bit of work to do. Gawn is 27, you don't draft a ruck the year you want to play them.

This guy might be more inline with our draft picks.

CALLUM JAMIESON – CLAREMONT
The North Beach junior has shown promising signs as a developing ruckman who can rest up forward. In three games for the Sandgropers, Jamieson kicked two goals and averaged nine possessions, five hit-outs, three marks, three tackles, and two inside 50s. His best game of the Championships came against Vic Country where he finished with 10 possessions, six hit-outs, four marks, three tackles and a goal. In six games for Claremont, Jamieson is averaging 15 possessions, 24 hit-outs, five tackles, four marks and has already kicked three goals. His best performances came against Perth (19 possessions and 38 hit-outs) and Swan Districts (18 possessions and 39 hit-outs). He made his senior debut for Claremont with its Reserves team against Perth in round 16 and showed excellent signs with nine possessions, 13 hit-outs and a goal. At 200 centimetres, Jamieson has raw athleticism, good skills and is a strong mark of the football.

Newnes delisted so this opens up another draft pick.
I assume it will be used to upgrade Wilkie.

51 - Ruck depth
82 - Biggy Nyoun
100 - Upgrade Joyce
118 - Upgrade Wilkie

I feel a bit meh about Newnes moving on. He was a player who battled his heart out most weeks and was one player Richo loved to throw around to fill holes regardless of form. Im sure if someone of knowledge had of got him early enough they could have cleaned up his disposal. Just another player who never reached his potential at St Kilda.

Do we know where we plan on using Biggy? Was originally a fwd but has been rucking more.

Would imagine there could be a few ruck options at 51. Jackson will obviously go early and could see Nick Bryan going mid 30's.
Names left around our mark could include:
- Jack Bell
- Charlie Comben
- Henry Walsh (could try pull Sam over later on ;))
- Andrew Courtney
- Zak Patterson
- Josh Hart
- Hamish Allan
- Ben Kelly

All of which were in state teams.

I’d go with Walsh.

updated Saints picks as per AFL website 51, 76, 82. Looks like we are taking 3 picks to the draft and upgrading 1 rookie.

George please update thread title.

Something of note: currently there are 2 clubs looking to draft only 2 players, 14 clubs looking to draft more than 5 players. 2 clubs looking at drafting 8 players.

We don't have pick 76.

With McCartin gone we now have a 5th pick at 140 odd. No way we plan on using these live. Even if we upgrade Joyce and Wilkie, as well as matching for Biggy, we would be using 51 and 82.

I think the club are going to bring in a DFA option. Maybe Matty Lobbe or Zac Clarke as a depth ruck? I really like Sam Murray too. We are stacked at half back but maybe we can use him as more of a sweeping winger? Would be better than handy depth.

EDIT: There was talk of us being linked to Chris Masten immediately after he was delisted. Would be a solid senior body, coming from a team with top shelf IP, a premiership under his belt and he has over 200 games experience. Not a gun by any means but would be a very good option to cover us in case of injury.

51 - Live in the draft
82 - Biggy
100 - Joyce
120 - Wilkie
DFA - Masten

List Size:
main List 38-40 : Currently 35.
Rookie list 4-6 depending on main list size. currently 5: but Joyce is due for upgrade ( or delist ).
Cat B Rookies, up to 3. Currently 1.

If we assume we want to keep Joyce the likely choices are.

Draft 4 or Or 3 and a DFA : and Upgrade Joyce.
Draft 3 and upgrade both Joyce and Wilkie.
Draft 3 or 2 and a DFA and Upgrade Joyce and take a Rookie
Draft 2 and upgrade Joyce and Wilkie and take a Rookie.

The main difference between taking someone as a Rookie seems to be Contract length , and salary. ( For example Young is still under our Salary Cap , I get the impression that the AFL have given us permission to pay Paddy outside the cap ).
Of course if you have a player in mind, you can grab them in the draft before everyone else starts picking rookies.

I hope we have some Cat B's in mind. They are a long shot , but you have to be in it to win it.

The worst thing that can happen in the draft is for someone to bid on Biggy at pick 50.

Like LWP but I think there are better Free Agents around than Masten, eg as you mentioned Murray.

Are we better off getting someone proven to be lacking or close to retirement or getting someone in the draft who has never had a good shot.
Markus Lentini? ( Could he run a tag like CJ did, leaving Steel to grow up and play like a real player ).
Lachie Dickson?
Sam Fisher ( Northern Blues - has improved since being a Swans Rookie )
Tom Gribble? ( is he too old , has his disposal improved since his younger days )?
Mitch Hibberd? ( reinvented as an inside mid )

I'm hoping that Hugo Ralphsmith slides to our first pick. Apart from his Dad having played for us he looks a good prospect. Cal Twomey reckons he will go around the pick 30 mark. With a little luck he slides 25 or so spots.....

It has been an interesting year for Ralphsmith. He didn't hit great heights for Vic Metro at the under-18 championships, and his form for the Sandringham Dragons was also up and down. But let's focus on the ups to his game. Ralphsmith, whose dad Sean played 34 games for Hawthorn and St Kilda, is an elite runner, and he was top five in the 2km time trial and also in the top six for the running vertical jump. He can play as a hard-working midfielder, but has also spent time deep forward, where he flies for his grabs. Has ability and a bit to work with.

What do you think???

I saw the write up and he'd have to be in consideration.

I want Tyson Milne now.

Lays heaps of tackles. Good kick from half back. Would roll into Geary's spot in a couple of years. Paton can play higher up the ground.

Get it done Saints.

Pick 51 - Milne
Pick 82 - Nyoun
Pick 100 - Joyce
Pick 120 - Wilkie
Pick 140 - Lobbe

Feel like we need to look inside more and get a mature body option around the ball.
Not against Masten but wouldn't mind someone a little younger if they are about?
Not sure who that would be? Nick Robertson?

No point in getting fringe players. That don’t improve the side

Was more thinking depth. But I get what you are saying.
It is pretty much what Murray will be also.

Either way I reckon we need another inside mid. If more than 1 of Steele, Ross, Hanners or Dunstan go down we could be looking real fragile in through the middle.

Do you notice a trend with our recruiting now that Gallagher is in on the act. Young and Wilkie from Sth Aust state league that's 2 from 4.
Our trading Ryder and Howard S Aust players...the rest wanted to come back to Victoria and Butler well he was available.

My bet is we draft someone from SA either delisted or state league. Luke Partington may be an astute get at 51. If he lasts that long.

Mention about Crouch as a free agent next year...that Sth Aust connection again appears again.

Delicious pick swap with GWS to frustrate Freo go the Gubby connection. It seems that past connections matter in the AFL.

Who would have thought.
