We can almost rule a top 3 pick out with draw we have. Will probably end up being around 5. Not that disappointing when it looks as though we'd end up with a back flanker at 3 anyway, but it would probably rule out being able to trade our pick with Giants two first rounders.

I don't think we can afford to take Kemp if he's done his knee, especially when he is yet to prove he can really become a quality midfielder.

Not a bad year to trade out your first rounder imo.

If Kemp has done an ACL I would move our pick to Devon Robertson. A mid with huge leadership qualities having dragged his WA team across the line in the championship. He reminds me of a more skilled Andrew Thomson, an absolute goer.

Just sayin' but there's been a number of posters on here that have bemoaned that we drafted yet another back flanker when we took Hunter Clark...
Thing was Clark wasn't just another back flanker. He won the best and fairest at Dandenong after playing as an inside midfielder and dominating. In fact I think he broke a record there for most votes in a season. That's where he played his best footy.

That's what I was getting at Birdy... a kid plays the vast majority of his junior footy as a mid but is popped on a back flank at the national champs (most likely due to his footy nous & kicking skills) and all of a sudden he's a HBFer.

Maybe, just maybe, we should have a deeper look at the junior careers of prospective kids in the draft before we start whinging about 'we only draft HBFers".

IMO Coff will also end up as a mid. He's just learning the trade across HB now.

I disagree with Coff. I think he just looks a genuine back flanker to me.

It's very common that a guy that plays predominantly midfield in their juniors comes into AFL and end up playing off a flank. Very rare does it go the other way though.

Far too much sense spoken in this post.

That may be true but his underage career saw him play in a variety of positions... he's exceptionally versatile.

He's not going to be a big brute inside but i think he could develop into a 6'3, right footed version of Jack McCrae.

Alternatively he is very simmilar in the way he plays to Elliot Yeo with simmilar athletic attributes needs to work on his contested game and built up his body but he has the talent just some time happy for him to play at half back unitl then. I also think that we will get to a point where he really starts to take the game on we see his kiciking and decision making stand out simmilar to Clark in the last month. FWIW he should be close to RS nom this week

Yeo is a great comparison actually.

Yes I am aware Coff played various roles in his under 18's including mid and forward. I just think from what I've seen he looks a genuine back flanker to me. I'll be surprised if he ends up as a midfielder.

I wasn't really referring to him though when suggesting it's pretty rare for a guy that has played most of his juniors off a back flank to all of a sudden become an AFL midfielde. I think it's very risky drafting to take someone who very rarely plays midfield at under 18 level and expect them to become a midfielder at the top level.

And a bloody god one too , iv seen him do that side step and take off while playing for Sandy and its all class , he hasn't done it much yet at AFL level but once he gets a bit of confidence look out , You need class in the back line every bit as much as you need it up forward , i think he will end up being a gun for us for many years to come

Coffield has always struggled to win his own footy which means a transition to the midfield is unlikely. His speed, composure & skills are best utilised in the back half imo. Bob Murphy type.
Yeah that's a good model to base yourself on

When he takes off he moves like David Rhys-Jones IMO

Played his first game for us on a wing and played nearly his best game.

Yep. I definitely wasn't having a crack at him because I don't think his a midfielder. He's going to he a terrific player for us no doubt. I just think now we have to target a mid.

Coff looks pretty damn tall, like not far off key position height. He's got the same height and chunky neck like that Berry kid from the Lions, both are gonna be very strong units after a few pre seasons.

It'll be interesting to see what he develops into. Still 19 so might get a little taller.

most juniors will spend time in the midfield, because they're that good. they're at the elite end of the talent pool.

for example our own brown dominated as a junior in the midfield. now would you ever say he would be a mid at AFL level, of course not.

so you can't have a blanket rule that states because a junior played midfield means they will transition to the midfield at the highest level. which is why champs form takes precedence.

I reckon he could be Rory Sloane like.

I hope Coffiled keeps improving, he looked a long way off early in the year but is coming home strong. He's got the best hair at the club, should be made captain on that alone. Hopefully he can play midfield longer term, a big bull in the mids would be nice.

Agree he looked slow and disinterested early, but he is starting to can get that spark back.
