We can't - we have already traded out our future 2nd and 3rd round picks! Can either have one or the other - no first rounder and the rest, or trade as many others and keep the first rounder.

Yep, pretty hard to see how we can do any trade with that future first. We'd have to trade it for a second and a third as well as a pick this year. Values:

Our first next year: around 1300
A late second next year: around 500
A late third next year: around 190

That leaves 610 points which is about pick 30. And assuming we'd have to take a discount to get the deal done, probably more like pick 35.

So the trade could look like:

OUT: pick 10 next year
IN: pick 35 this year, pick 35 next year, pick 55 next year

I guess that might make sense depending on what we think next year's draft will look like - maybe those later picks come in a lot because of father-son/academy bidding eating up multiple picks, and the earlier pick is worth less because all the good players are already club-tied. But seems unlikely.

I just can't see any way we get back into this year's first without paying significant overs.

Plus, i wonder if they have plans for next year's first seeing we could have worked a deal that saw us give that to Freo for Hill and kept this year's first if we wanted to.

I reckon we just sit back and accept that this year's draft hand is pretty meh, but our side is going to be much better in the long run from this year's trade period.

We didn’t want to give it up for King, should have traded it after he signed.

It’s just a suggestion by the AFL and can be waved.

yes... if we get a 2020 late 2nd back and an early second this year, for our next years first.. the AFL would almost certainly tick it off

I don think points are the issue for GC... they have 1,2,15 this year... maybe they think 2 firsts and an early second next year is a good option, giving up only an early second this year and a late second next year that they dont really need after having 3 early picks three years in a row

FFS , no-one is going to want to gamble on where the Saints finish next year, so the best you would get , would be a second round pick this year in exchange for our first round pick next year.
We'd then look like complete idiots if we had a bad season next year.

King signed on the 14th. We got Hill on the 16th.

Whether or not they were holding it for King initially was a moot point by the time we finalised the Hill deal. We could have kept 10 and given them next year's 1st but we didn't. There must be a reason they want next years, and it's no longer for King

Next year’s draft hand has a big hole in the middle of it too though. And I like the optimism but we don’t know if it will make us much better in the long run. We’ve lost Steven and Bruce. Hill barely covers Steven’s output over the last few years and Ryder doesn’t really even cover Bruce. Jones is solid but couldn’t finish top 10 in Sydney’s B&F apparently and Howard is still more potential than proven. Butler isn’t anything special but goes alright. If Howard, Jones and Butler go to the next level then we’re better in the long run but it’s speculative I suppose.

I don’t mean to be gloomy but it’s too early to say that we will be much better.

Disagree. We are already better.

So there

I hate what I’ve become. This football club has made me cynical.

It's ok mate. We are all allowed to get shitty with the club sometimes.

We are only 1 good pre season game away from you being up and about. You know it to be true

Especially seeing as Jones replaces Acres and Newnes as well. We have eaten into our depth. I don't think improvement is a given and a lot relies on players like Hanners and King having excellent seasons.

Jones has the most potential to me. Butler is probably around Kent quality to me. Howard and Brown are pretty similar types to me.

Brown and Howard similar

What do you think Howard is? He's a big one on one defender who can go forward if you don't want to score many goals. I think he has more potential to be a high level player than Brown due to age but he's not going to reinvent the way we play. Port staff were saying they tried him as a different type of defender in a more intercept role and he couldn't adapt so sent him forward then to the SANFL. He looks like a good potential player but I think you might be disappointed if you think he'll be Jeremy McGovern from day one.

Why would people assume he is going to be McGovern when the comparison is brown? Personally i would be looking at Carslile, Roberton and wilkie in that intercept marking role. Leaving Howard to play on the key forward. Which I believe he should be more damaging only because he will be more of a threat due to his disposable by foot and pace.

Maybe wait. Could be a surprise. I wouldn’t be giving what ports coaches say too much weight they are under siege for letting him go. They’re getting thin on excuses.

I just said he's like Brown. I think his role is probably that one.

Brown is a better runner and doesn't get lapped at his 1 st time trial at new club

Does anybody know any more FS or NGA kids likely to attract bids before our pick??

With Green, Henry and Maginness all looking likely to be to be taken with later picks, it's reasonable to say our p51 will become p48.

We could even sneek into the 2nd round with a spot of trading..
p48 and a future 4th would get p40. Another future 4th gets us p35.

There's also an option to swap 2020 1st with the Cats and get p24, with some 4ths either way.
I quite like the idea that we'd end up with picks 24 and 40ish this year, with 17 and 70ish next year.

The Cats are my target too.

I think we could easily talk to them about our 2020 1st for pick 17 + a future 2nd/3rd package.

Draft Jack Mahoney ;)
