FWIW I don't think Ellis comes, if Essendon get close to our deal he will stay in Melbourne. Massive ties to his family, he lives in Essendon with his partner, has had a sick father as well.

We can only dream

Luke reynolds (medium forward) - Carlton reject, currently playing for Glenelg south Australia scoring a lot of goal, 4 month older than holman.

For the people lamenting the likes of Ellis coming in. Who do we bring in that is in that 25-29 age group that can add to the group? That is realistic and not magical Christmas land.
Sadly they all come from state league, Clayton from Werribee, Nyhuis delisted from Fremantle, hibberd from Williamstown. Some I might not know who they are. They are out there if you willing to go and find it. I think 23-26 age group GCs should target, 27-29 ( Miles, Swallow, Witts, Murdoch, GHS, Thompson, harbrow, Hanley).

fu** me thank you for pointing this out. I can't believe how fussy some of these guys are when we literally don't have one outside player of his calibre.

Very picky for supporters of a team that have nothing at this point. Brandon has his flaws but fu** me he is a major improvement.
Not sure you are going to get Brandon. He does want to stay in Melbourne and now Essendon have expressed interest. Although I can't see why Essendon would want him when they need inside mids???? He'd be a better fit for the dogs or Melbourne of the Melbourne teams.

Build from the draft

We might draft 2 guns in Rowell and Anderson this year, but we’re likely to lose 2 gun kids in King & Lukosius next year.

Then add in losing Martin and Ah Chee this year.

We’re losing both talented kids and mature players.

It’s a cycle that’s not currently working.

Draft alone will not fix our list. It would take major draft concessions for 3-5 years to accomplish that.

We have to trade for mature players that are willing to move to the wooden spoon club.

And that’s a pretty shallow pool that requires extra incentive $$$ until we start winning games.

What if they come and don't perform and after signee massive contract with GCS. Will there be any contingency plan? no guarantee Sexton and 2mp will perform after signing long term contract. Ablett and other signed long term contract and still break it.

Literally the only one besides Ellis I can think of, who is realistic and not a trash player, is Ellis Yolmen. But they play different roles.

Ellis is a wingman. I would take Hanley and Weller again. Hanley has just been unlucky, easy to criticise in hindsight bud.
Hasn't played on the wing for Richmond for a couple of years
Sport is all about luck
What if Ablett hadn't done his shoulder
What if Bock didn't break his leg
What if 2MP had kicked a goal instead of putting the ball to the top of the goal square
What if Hanley...
And I presume you're using "bud" as a perjorative but we're all just fans with an opinion
Not looking to be liked or hated
Currently my opinion is about another player seeing us as his superannuation plan rather than really wanting to play for us
I don't know how we fix it, but buying in middling talent at overs hasn't worked so far

Ellis Yolmen and Greenwood are the only two of all those mentioned in past weeks that seem to be the types we need. The others are just extra light weights at big dollars if they come. Bryce Gibbs and Eddie Betts would be OK if we can entice them AND then as I said in an earlier post, there's some good cattle languishing in the Lions 2's that don't have to change their location much to drive down the highway. Rowell and Anderson plus a couple of these AND some middle aged SANFL/WAFL types and we might be more competitive. With the current crop we could be even worse in 2020 if the 'kids' don't lift as all expect them to.

Totally agree - we cannot and should not entertain players who can't make the best 22 for their team or at the very least have played a fair few games at that level. Ellis is the most border line of the Tigers and this is re-enforced by very few if any Tigers supporters on here seeming to be too fussed at him wanting to leave. Might be different if it was somebody they really liked. If he's the best we can entice, the AFL need to step in and really help across the board not just with a priority pick.

Miles has been more than serviceable as a player who couldn't crack it at the Tigers but has done well for us. He isn't a sexy player, but he does a good job. There are people there that could do a job that can't crack into top 4-6 teams across the league. You can't automatically dismiss anyone like that. Otherwise our potential list of incomings shortens considerably.

Went to NEAFL Grand Final (3 quarters)And saw an outstanding exhibition of AFL football put on by the Brisbane LIons.
Yes the opposition was far inferior but their are at least half a dozen lions players who would walk into our side and make us more competitive.
Players I would look at in AhChee deal would be Cutler Taylor Hinge Cox , all have speed and good disposal (take two in exchange for AhChee)
The surprise for me was Matt Eagles whose first half was outstanding , let absolutely nothing pass him.
Big strong man who is very quick and loves a contest.
Would be enormous help to our younger players.
Yes 29 years of age but super fit and would come very cheap.
In my opinion worth a punt.

Miles is the sort of player i'm talking about that we need to recruit or better. He played some good games in the A's but then was forced out in later years. Still kept racking up possessions in the 2's but keen to get a game anywhere. As good as he's been, he's really only a band-aid until we get a solid mid field with a couple of extra game changers coming in to bolster Swallow, Brodie, Rowell (assuming we get him) etc. This frees the lighter bodies of Fiorini, Bowes, Ainsworth to play outer where they'll rack up kicks (hopefully). We live in hope that somebody in recruiting knows what they're doing.

Watched a half of VFL Essendon vs Williamstown and SANFL Glenelg vs Adelaide, there is a massive gap with their league compare to NEAFL. Both only preliminary final and yet the standard is totally different.

You were at the same game I was and saw the same potential. Cutler and Hinge would do fine. Taylor - is a no. Even the Lions supporters around me didn't rate him. Cedric Cox could be a gun and Corey Lyons showed a huge upside (yep, Jarryd's little brother). There is a wealth of talent down there we should be exploring. Number 21 (Skinner) was another who really showed promise and still young.

Miles has been great
Big fan
BTW I never buy into monikers like squib with respect to a player like Ellis
You play 150+ games of AFL footy and run over that white line you are brave in my book
The issue with him is whether his heart is in it, not whether he has heart
And is he really a 250+ game player?
I get the impression we've seen the very best of B Ellis already
His brother Corey on the other hand is ready for a breakout year 2020;)

Would like us to have a crack again at Zak Smith apparently only St Kilda chasing him and they aren't going to be able to land everyone they are chasing, also Shaun Higgins would be another
They’ll get him for nothing. Off contract. Not wanted. I don’t see him coming to GCS again unfortunately

Sorry, disagree. NEAFL is absolute crap. Example is C Lyons - he got plenty of ball in NEAFL similar to Scheer but he will also be most probably delisted. With our list healthy, none of the players you mentioned would be in our best 22. Yes, I would target some Lions players with potential - Cox, Payne, Wooler, Starcevich, Smith in Ah Chee trade and next year if they are still waiting for opportunity. Of course, other teams will do the same.

In our last NEAFL game against Lions at Gabba Suns had 13 listed players vs Lions 22. Suns jumped them early, in the end Suns lost only by 25. Easy to get impressed when playing 20-22 listed players.

This frees the lighter bodies of Fiorini, Bowes,
They are not lighter bodies anymore. Both around 85kg. Add another preseason. They just need to play consistently in midfield to learn, get experience, build synergy. I think the worst is over for our midfield. Still probably 1 more year to start delivering. We just need to stay healthy.

Maybe we would have more chance of landing better quality mature players if we chased them as a package ie. if we wanted Burgoyne, maybe we should have offered deals to Smith & Birchall as well.

Or if we want Greenwood, also offer deals to Betts and Ellis-Yolman.

But sell the club to them together.

Maybe it will give them the courage to take the leap to a wooden spoon club when a couple of mates and jumping with them?

I really dunno. Nothing else seems to be working?
