List Mgmt. 2019 Draft/Trade/FA Thread - Final Wrap

Yeah totally, without knowing the ins and outs of the discussions that were happening it is hard to come to a solid conclusion, I would have just liked us to pick up one more good to very good mid.

Overall, however, I think our best 22 has improved.
The best 22 is better for sure. In other news, Carlton seem to be after STK's Newnes so that might make Jack M a little nervous - the salary cap might be shrinking and they may be rethinking dependent upon how much Martin places on himself.

Carlton commit to Newnes - so that leaves one J Martin right up poo creek without a paddle - unless the Dees come calling.
The boy had better be rethinking his wage demands if he wants to be an AFL player next season.

Would we have him back if he was only asking $300K - $400K?

We made a stand, no-one wanted him badly enough and we re-sign him for half price.

I'd have a good old giggle if that happened......

PS: I'd still like Townsend 😇

Don’t forget they had cash for Martin and Papley. Acres on less than Papley would have. Martin still gets to Carlton unfortunately

R u sure?
Jen said a few days ago he was back for his sisters 21st birthday

I just assumed since his sister and mum headed back as looks like she had a party. I assumed he was there 🤷‍♀️ but guess he may have stayed around for a bit. He should be back soon as pre season for the young boys will be starting a week from Monday

Carlton have signed Blake Acres as well as Newnes? I thought it was just the latter?

Final Free Agent - Sam Murray - 20 possessions a game.

So my 3 - if possible:

Kaiden Brand
Jacob Townsend
Sam Murray

I now officially promise to shut up about DFA's! 😇

Blake Acres went to Freo as a part of the Brad Hill trade

They won’t sign any dfas, the reason for the ten rookies is to phase out the list cloggers who are under contract. This means to get the draft and academy selections alone at least five of them will be sent to the rookie list. How a list squeeze happens when a team wins only a couple of games is ridiculous. You should be delisting about ten without question, Lions delisted 4 quality players without hesitation . Someone in management seriously overvalues the playing list

Lions delisted them because they know their ceiling, they were out of contract and more importantly they have 10 young players 1-3 years in a system who played 0 games and one more young player with 1 game. If they don't get opportunity some of them will leave next year. If you compare depth of Lions and Suns at the moment I take Suns without hesitation. The main difference between Suns and Lions is the best 22 where Suns are 2 years younger and have 30-40 games less average game experience.

It appears only one Suns player is out of contract on the senior list who could be delisted - Young. On the rookie list there are 4 potential candidates - Dawson, Heron, Fletcher, Wigg.

I already posted this but this is Suns vs Lions depth at the moment depending on the best 22 with games played. It's quite interesting.

Lions depth (10):
Mathieson(46), Bailey(27), Answerth(19), Lester(126), Starcevic(5), Cox(13), Eagles(4), Smith(11), Allison(10), Hinge(2)

Then you got 10 young players 1-3 years in a system with 0 games under belt.

Suns depth (12):
Hombsh(116), Joyce(63), Wright(66), Powell(20), Holman(43), Miles(88), Lemmens(87), Smith(115), Burgess(14), Corbett(9), Young(100), Murdoch(122)

I thought they had to finalise their pre draft list on Friday but didn't see any de-listings etc? There needs to be at least half a dozen to go (either completely or to rookie list). I agree we shouldn't just be clogging the rookie list with guys who will not get a game or can't contribute to the NEAFL education class.

Fox Footy have put together a Best 22 but without the draft players, which seems to be a little premature. Does give an idea though as to who might be treading on thin ice.

Here it is:
B: Jarrod Harbrow, Rory Thompson, Jack Hombsch
HB: Pearce Hanley, Sam Collins, Lachie Weller
C: Brandon Ellis, Touk Miller, Wil Powell
HF: Hugh Greenwood, Ben King, Ben Ainsworth
F: Izak Rankine, Peter Wright, Alex Sexton
FOLL: Jarrod Witts, David Swallow, Brayden Fiorini
I/C: Jack Bowes, Darcy Macpherson, Jack Lukosius, Top Draft Pick
In: Brandon Ellis, Hugh Greenwood, Zac Smith
Out: Michael Rischitelli, Jack Leslie, Connor Nutting, Brad Scheer, Callum Ah Chee

Thoughts: Wright will need to prove himself in the pre season to deserve a spot. Day should sneak in ahead of him based on last season. I'd have Ballard well in front of Hombsch. I think Miller, Powell and McPherson will likewise have to have big pre seasons to withstand the pressure from Rowell, Anderson, Brodie Miles, Rowell and Anderson etc. The rest will probably earn their spot unless we recruit a 'darkie' in the draft or pre season draft. If we are lucky enough to get Gould in the draft, some pressure would mount on Hanley, Harbrow and Ballard which can't be a bad thing.

This also doesn't allow for Riordan, McLennan, Murdoch, Joyce, Lemmens etc doing something huge in pre trials ....and there's still a guy called Jack Martin we might either retain or end up doing some sort of deal with Carlton on.

If the team is selected well, it might be a time to get a little excited - and by that I mean 6-8 wins at best. Can't get too over the top given our abysmal injury history and selection.

In summary there is no point hanging on to players that were place fillers in 2019 and will not take us higher in 2020 - just a matter of determining who stays and who goes to accommodate the new INs.

The difference is the lions depth are B -C grade the suns have a couple of D graders. If all the Suns depth players you listed were delisted Wright would be the only one guaranteed of being picked up. The sad part is the rookie list should be made up of academy players and NT players who have a chance of making it (and some will now miss out) not a dumping ground for the contracted players who aren’t going to get better.

Disagree how you grade the above depth.

Besides Budarick and Rosas we still have 2 more spots on the rookie list for more academy players even if we move 5 players from the senior list to the rookie list. Add Ace on international scholarship.

Agree again. Seems to be a reluctance to acknowledge some of our current list wouldn't get a game anywhere else. There is just no point hanging on to dead wood and so make way for the Darwin recruits and Academy kids on to the rookie list which is what it's supposed to be for.

Unfortunately the realities of our situation is that you can't sack players mid contract after the trade period.

No player manager worth his salt would ever direct a player to the Sun's going forward if they were not prepared to honour their contracts, or at least provide the re-rookie option to see out their tenure and give themselves a hope of fighting for their career.

It's not like quality academy kids are lining up this year. Budarick realisticaly would be pick 30-50, Ace is international scholar, NT Rosas would be pick 50+. Who else? Maybe Gore? Personally, I prefer Wigg, Fletcher, Dawson, Heron to get another year. Still 2 spots available without further delisting.

While I am not excited about Schoenfeld, GHS, C. Ellis they will provide mature bodies needed in NEAFL. We can't play 10 academy kids there just for the sake of it especially when we usually have only 1-3 academy kids per year who are worth a punt.

We are already the youngest team in the competition.

The reality is that so far Bowes is the only player from our academy system in the best 22.

You could argue Weller is another academy player

Man I really really like what Weller brings to the side. I have no issues with the trade we did for him and then consequently Ballard from the pick. I chalk it as a win. Love Lachie.
It seemed like overs at the time but was a massive boost for team and fan morale to have a player like Lachie come out and actually request a trade to the Suns and Ballard was an awesome sweetener.
