Bowes said he still had enormous respect for Martin, who he shares a close friendship with, and would have no problem having him on the list in 2020 despite the midfield-forward requesting a trade to Carlton.

“Absolutely,” Bowes said.

“That’s out of my control but I have all the respect in the world for Jack Martin.

“I love him as a bloke and a player too. I get on with him really well and I’ll support whatever decision the club makes about his future.”

Bowes said Martin would be professional enough to play his best football for the Suns if he were to arrive back at Gold Coast through the upcoming pre-season draft.

A few months ago you would have said "Ben King will follow. And so on"
If you let Martin walk for nothing you have made no point at all. You will merely be repeating past behaviours.

Martin goes. Lukosius will follow. And so on.

Most long term relationships go through rocky periods. Chucking in the towel every time the going gets tough will end you up alone, down and eventually out.

Absolutely you do not. You’ve been down that road and look where it’s gotten you. On life support.

Player retention at all costs now for the Suns. That means re-drafting Martin and sending a message to all of your players, their managers and raiding interstate clubs.

A few noses are going to be put out if joint but it’ll be worth it for the new tone being set for your club.

You won’t survive into the future if you fail to take a hard line now.

Dees haven't won a flag since Man landed on the moon, and yet he seems fixated on The Suns and Martin.

He is taking Meltank being jilted by Martin rather badly. Most amusing :)

Sanity will prevail and you guys will let him go to Carlton. Pity we couldn't do a deal, but it is what it is. We got zero compo for Eddie Betts and Jarrod Waite in the past, sometimes crap things happen to all/most clubs.

I am as much a supporter of Gold Coast being a successful
Not really sure I would consider you a Suns supporter reading some of your posts on Martin's thread.

You strongly suggested on Martin's thread for Suns to cut their losses otherwise Carlton will go after Rowell, a mad Blues fan, in 2 years with a Navy Blue War chest knocking. Like the clubs will not go anyway. You claim we overpaid King, Rankine (how would you know) and so on.

Now you claim that you are so happy that GC can pick up Anderson with PP so Suns can overcome angst losing Martin for nothing. Did you actually miss that most Suns fans are happy for Martin to leave (even for nothing) and actually don't want him to be re-drafted?

Entertaining posts yes, Suns supporter definitely no.

So bending over to allow your draft tampering is “sanity prevailing”. Not too keen on you either coming in here and dictating to us that what you want is sanity.
That’s two VFL clubs fans coming in here in the last few minutes being shamefully condescending.

Bet you wouldn't be having this strong/passionate stance if Martin had agreed to join Melbourne, instead of him bluntly telling The Dees to go forth and multiply (IE refusing to meet with any Dees official)

I am as much a supporter of Gold Coast being a successful, strong club going forwards as anyone here (I was a big advocate for them to get their pre first 1 round PP and happy for their rescue package) and I can live with them taking Martin in the PSD, that is their right to do so, but as I say, I highly doubt you would be championing this cause for GC if Martin agreed to play for Melbourne.

I will admit a modest guilty pleasure in seeing Carlton jilted at the recruiting isle again but it doesn’t enter my logic in predicting GC will re-draft Martin. I enjoy the footy discussion, especially when I’m seeing an event about to unfold that so few are willing to open their eyes to.

And please spare me the “I’m as much a supporter of GC as anyone” malarkey. You’ll garner more respect if you’re honest with your motivations and allegiances. Which are to your success-starved club.

Like other nascent clubs from other sporting codes on the Goldy have?

You’ll live if you make smart decisions. Which until now you haven’t. That’s not condescending. That’s just a fact.

More condescending nastiness on our own board.
GCU totally solvent and paid every bill but was removed for political reasons fact
GC Chargers had $2million in the bank but was dissolved as a super league nrl compromise to appease Brisbane fact

Gee I’m over it.

U have to repeat this stuff over and over to these imbeciles

Go and fix up your electricity grid down there rather than telling us what to do

I’m sick of their opinions and on pumping electricity into VFL land to keep their lights on

If we trade up with 15&20 the only target i'll be happy with is Dylan Stephens (Lachie Whitfield type operator yes please). If not i'm happy to take Trent Bianco with 15 or 20, we need an elite kick like Alex Witherden does for brisbane. With Hanley & Harbrow the wrong side of 30 we need an elite medium size defender with good skills

I think Alex witherden is incredibly overrated.

To be honest, i haven't watched him much this year but his first year was very clean. He was taking the kick outs and lacing em out. We do need an elite kick coming out and Lukousis is the obvious one but 4 talls in the backline may be too much? I see Weller pushing up a bit more onto the wing/mid, he's wasted in the backline

Especially Collins?
We got him for free, he's been here a year, and he played every game when fit in the 1sts.
I highly doubt he wouldn't re-sign if we've got a contract in front of him.
He was decent but not world beating in the 10 games he played, so he can hardly go demanding a huge contract from other parties.
I'd think it's more on our end - biding time until we see how he goes on return.

We've heard Rigby say that a stress fracture in the femur is an unusual position - they might be concerned that he won't get back to top level, particularly early.
true, I'm just one of those peope who wants happy families at the club kinda thing where everyones locked away for their life

Looks like Martin was with Rankine and Lemmens watching the fight tonight.

He said she said that someone that knows the Suns told Martin that they will select him at pick 1.

And he was like yeah sweet bro for a million bucks I’ll play anywhere.

Let’s put 50k on Barry Hall

I'm going against the grain and saying I'm all for us keeping Martin. Yes it is front loaded so it's 1mil first two years but it significantly reduces after that to average out at $600-700k over 5 years which isn't crazy these days. I don't believe he's burnt bridges with the players either.

It allows us to make a stand, retain a player we developed for another year and if he does want to leave again we hold all the cards next year as he's contracted. Best case scenario he stays for the whole contract and plays his days out.

Thats my opinion and it's probably a bit more of a business centric opinion but I think it's a great idea to redraft him if we do.

James Brayshaw IQ = 4

They must be getting nervous in Carlton now.
Its amazing how Martin went from “he’s not worth a used brown tea bag lol” by a Carlton fan on twitter with a stack of likes and no Carlton fan calling out the racism to him now being a much needed million dollar a year player.
It’s becoming clearer our players are fine with him returning and we have the cap space.

And the good thing about trading a contracted player the new club takes the contract.. so even if we do pay him 1 million and trade him after the first year likely not to have to keep his salary on the books
