If you want to learn about drafting players, Richmond is the team, Sydney stack Spp, Liam baker rookie pick. As for academy players only Thomas played regular AFL this year, blakey get dropped too.
Yeah Baker’s going to be a much better player than Nick Blakey.........:drunk:

Hahahaha i got you, a top 10 pick compare to rookie pick in his second year. If your academy players is so good other team will bid on them you don't need to test them out in neafl. Club don't want to waste their high end first round pick on their academy players if they don't need to.

They have been putrid in this area for decades, far more misses than hits. Please don’t follow those model

Hahahaha, is not like GCS got a lot of hit lately, Ellis and MILES (Richmond) , GHS and Murdoch.(Geelong). Rookie list players also you don't dare to pick how soft are you.
Not even suggested you to use 1-3 Rd Nd pick.
1) high end draft pick overpaid for them to stay
2) third and 4th round pick used it on ordinary academy players.
3) rookie list pick ( Leslie and Risca type)
4) paid long contract for other club reject or not best 22 to come.
5) sold KOLO and scrimshaw for near to nothing pick.

Agree, I’m not saying we have been better just that the Richmond model is not the one to follow

So are we likely to pick up Kyle Dunkley tomorrow? Carlton seem to have their eyes on Josh Deluca/Cody Hirst which gives us the opportunity to pick up Dunkley. If we did get Kyle then he'd be the second father-son player for another club to be drafted by us (Darcy Mac being the first).

How does the mid-season draft work in terms of contracts? Is it just the standard two year deal (or 1.5 years in this case)?

They are given a deal to the end of the season IIRC and paid $70k. I'm presuming we have the option to re-sign them.

The draft has been introduced to help clubs fill spots on their list that have opened up due to retirements or long term injuries.

Should AFL clubs have a list spot available or one is created through a player being placed on the inactive list, they will be able to add a player to their rookie list and select players based on reverse ladder order.

Clubs will then have first rights to re-contract their drafted player or he becomes a delisted free agent.

And I believe they get paid $70,000 for the rest of this season and another $20k if they're then de-listed.

They get 50k and then if we delist them they get another 20.

Yeah mate, you're correct, I got that wrong......I found the article

- Players must submit their contract terms when nominating

- A player on a short-term contract ending on October 31 the same year receives a minimum of $50,000, with a further $20,000 if they are not re-signed or picked up as a delisted free agent

- A player on a contract that ends on October 31 the following year is subject to the same terms as any other player

- An AFL club can re-sign a player as per the current rookie-list rules, otherwise the player becomes a delisted free agent

- The AFL will send the full nomination list to all AFL clubs and state league bodies

- An AFL club must pay 50 per cent of any advance payments to a drafted player's previous club before they are eligible to play a game
