Also played school footy with Ben King last year. Get the impression selecting him could be a bit of tactical play at helping Ben settle in also.

The Gold Coast Suns have selected Mitch Riordan with the second selection in the 2019 NAB mid-season draft.

With two list spot’s available following Rory Thompson and Harrison Wigg being added to the inactive list, the club moved to add the 19-year-old inside midfielder, who had been playing with the Dandenong Stingrays in 2019.

Riordan was overlooked in the 2018 NAB AFL Draft following a frustrating year with injury, however, has managed to turn his fortunes around in 2019 playing six games for the Stingrays in the NAB League.

General Manager Football Operations, Jon Haines said the mid-season draft provided a great opportunity to improve the SUNS list .

“Mitch joins us with a really professional work ethic, a fantastic attitude and has had a great season so far with the Stingrays,” Haines said.

“He displays the character standards we are targeting in potential recruits and has often been recognised for his leadership capabilities.

“With the opportunity to add to our group during the season, we wanted to ensure we took a long-term approach to help improve our list.”

Mitch will be welcomed to the club on Tuesday and be available to train and play with the club for the remainder of the 2019 AFL Season.

Seeing his highlights and hearing his story, I’m a bit surprised he didn’t at least get rookie listed last year.

Not worth the money if they aren't going to play AFL. Have to pay an extra 20K if they are delisted at seasons end.

I can understand, the whole broken finger 8-10weeks off.
Just means he can do a mini pre season then come back play finals and a grand final

I don't mind Richmond stop Geelong and lost in GF. Pickett will be better than stack and baker.

The worse scenario is a burn Rookie pick for Richmond, GCS pick high end draftees and sell them cheap or picking up academy players like nutting that need to improve their game in state league, a waste of senior list spot for a fourth Rd pick

Will be a solid player for them, don't think he will be anywhere near a top 10 player for them.

WAFL friends tell me that Pickett went walkabout at the start of the season. In no way out of the woods behaviourally. Amazing talent though.

Apart from rieldwolt, crotchin, dusty, Rance, Caddy so far Richmond have been able to slot anybody in as their top 10 players.
