yep, you too? I grew up in South Hobart and went to Friends School...….you guys blow up about 100 point losses for The Suns our first 18 was so bad we would get done by 150 plus to Hutchins or St Virgils day in day out
Yep. That’s awesome, I was at Hutchins. I can’t remember the scores nowadays, too many concussions in my time, but I believe it was a St Virgil’s FB that dislocated my hip up at North Hobart. Good days, life was simpler..

If Carlton can have Murphy, Thomas Simpson and injury prone Kruzer playing this year , can't see why one Burgoyne freak GCS fan out next year. Hawthorn is on the down but Carlton still go and get their condition and strength coach.

Seriously lol, I give up, let’s just put Malchesci back out there, it will be the same result. I hear Malcolm Blight might be interested in a position as long as it’s 3 years
Burgoyne's been a great player no doubt - with the emphasis on 'been'. He's a Good Cop type of guy and we need a Bad Cop down back teaching and educating. That's why Hodge has been so good for Brisbane - I'd think Hurley would be a better option for this type of role - he's doing it already at Essendon.

Don't have problem with Hurley but are you willing to compromise your first Rd draft pick this year and next year, he is under contract until 2022. You need players that are willing to come and get able without compromise your overall list.

I mean, let’s look at Brisbane (not to take anything away from them) but is it the fact that Hodge joined the team, or is it the fact they have had no injuries all year to any of their starting 18.
It's both. Injuries play a huge factor and we've been blessed with good fortune and a top medical staff. Hodge has also really helped the other players grow up and improve, especially in defence. Gardiner, Lester and Answerth have improved out of sight over the last season or two, and I put a lot of that down to Hodge and his on-field coaching. In fact our youth all over the ground are developing fast, although defence has improved the most rapidly. I put that down to good coaching overall.

We're also rising fast because we have talented veterans who are being used properly, and recruited more over the past two seasons. Some of it was good fortune (Cameron), some down to reputation and good sales tactics (Neale, Lyons), some down to our good medical staff and seeking players who wanted a fresh start (McCarthy, Adams). And this is what Gold Coast lacks, it's the biggest difference between the clubs. Hodge is only one part of it. You guys know as well as I do that it's not a matter of just signing a bunch of greybeards. A couple of those should suffice, but you need players who are still great performers on-field.

If Dew got on well with players at Sydney, I'd be using his connections to get one of their greybeards (McVeigh, Jack) and try for their more experienced players who are still high performers (Kennedy, Rampe, even Buddy).

Ehh for free I wouldn't turn Burgoyne down.

Avg 16 touches and 4 marks a game.

Absolutely class disposal, the bloke clearly has longevity and can actually hit a target by foot.

Edit: FWIW these are the type of concessions I would prefer, being able to pay a couple of veterans outside the cap. This would also have a trickle down effect where we could keep money open to pay for new contracts. Would take this over a straight priority pick.

IF (it's a big if) the AFL is going to provide some sort of list concessions (ie extra cap and extra players) I'd be looking at grabbing a couple older players like Burgoyne and maybe someone from Sydney (McVeigh?). Our history of putting all the eggs in one basket didn't exactly work. But put Burgoyne and McVeigh around our kids and maybe get a managed season out of both — surely the input and presence around the club helps?

Don't forget that we're beggars right now. If premiership experienced well-regarded senior players want to help, then let them help.

Utmost respect for Burgoyne the player and person and delighted if he wants to come as an assistant coach, but if we think players like
him McVeigh ,Jack etc at their age are going to improve our list we are kiddng ourselves.
These guys will not come cheaply and will take up a list spot.
The biggest concern as most supporters realise is lack of quality midfielders, if some miraculous way we can improve this area Im sure
we will make significant gains immediately.

I've read somewhere that when Roughy finishes his footy career, he would like to get into List Management and his good mate Jordan Lewis, similarly with moving into Coaching. There's a good chance that both will finish this year.

Why not get Mark Evans, with his Hawthorn connections, approach them and offer them positions in our Footy Dept (with the aid of some AFL dollars/ambassadorships) on the proviso that, as part of the first 2 yrs of their Contracts, they suit up for the NEAFL team. Similar to what Andrew Swallow does now, only on a more regular basis. And for Roughy to attend all training sessions as well.

Surely that would be of great assistance to the young blokes coming thru, and it doesn't take up list spots. Just a thought.

they have both been asked multiple times in the media and have said they have no interest in playing for the suns or working off field for them

I'm of the old school and believe nothing that I read and only half of what I see/hear, especially where the Victorian media is concerned.

It may not even be a consideration for our Footy Club, but until an offer is put in front of them and they reject it, then it's still a possibility in my eyes.

This is true, and it's why I advocated making an offer to Josh Kennedy. Still a good midfielder, has won a premiership already and isn't likely to win another one at Sydney so could be tempted by a big offer. To an extent the same is true of Mundy, except for already winning a premiership.

I agree I think Hodge gets way to much credit and it’s because all the Melbourne media have a huge hard on for him and everything he dose.
I think he’s had very little impact on the Lions surge up the ladder.
In my opinion the coach Chris fagan deserves all the credit he’s done an amazing job.
He keeps it very simple doesn’t over overcomplicate things and coaches to his players strengths.

And I think Noble and Swann should get some of the kudos as well, for getting the players there for Fagan to work with.

You do wonder what the club actually is thinking....

Quality midfielders is the only thing they should be concentrating on, I'm the same in thinking if they can somehow grab a few quality midfielders the teams peformances will improve dramatically. This is where a boost in salary cap / exemptions from the AFL will come in handy.

Would a Tim Kelly, Clayton Oliver or Brad Hill come for $1.5mil a year?

The backline and forward lines are actually pretty decent when fit. Maybe a small quick goalsneak would be handy.

I do love how the Melbourne media think getting a Hodge type in is a new idea that they’ve come up with

It’s been slated as part of our rebuild strategy since the start of 2018

Just cracks me that they think we have no idea how to list manage - Cameron and the team know exactly what they need to do

Cameron hasn't exactly got the runs on the board like Wells or Wright so it remains to be seen if he actually knows what to do.

True but he’s not completely clueless - ex-player Melbourne media act like we have no idea with what we’re doing,

Getting some experienced heads is part of the plan, as is getting some A-Grade mids

Just had to balance the TPP first.... also they don’t want to pay massive overs and end up with an Ablett situation (where the team hinges on 1 good player)
