List Mgmt. 2019 Draft/Trade/FA Thread - Final Wrap

In one of the interviews Dew mentioned that we will target mature players but only the ones which can improve our best 22. Again Evans said what we really need is quality players 24-26 years old but the challenge is how to convince them to join us. Impossible right now I say. Yes, try as much you can but personally I will be happy if we get Rowell and Anderson and a couple Collins/Holman type.

Honestly, if we had no injuries like Lions, where do you think we would finish? Just limit injuries and we will start climbing the ladder.

Two games before mid season GCS are were very competitive, I think getting players fit and ready are priority, Thompson, Young, Sam fletcher, Riodan, Ah chee, Lehmman, Rankine, Collins, Mclennan, shoenfield, all miss game AFL or Neafl. Still need to draft academy players but cat B if nobody bid on them.

Ok I'll probably get told to fu** off but I'm interested...

What do you guys reckon it would take to get Luko to Port this off-season?
Not this year, GCS need to take the risk, even it mean taking less next year. If he extend his contract with Ben King will be massive for Gold Coast as a club with retention issue ( . We won't tell you to F off, just explain the situation and plan. Rowell, Anderson, Lukosius, Ben King and Rankine might improve win ratio also.

Top 5 pick and Ollie Wines
If he wanted to go this sounds about right
He's done nothing to sully his original draft status so unless you have pick 1 or 2 you'll have to come up with some honey to sweeten the deal
Whether Wines is sweet enough is the question but you'd probably take it if Lukosius indicated he wanted out
But you wouldn't actively trade him out for that- it's just what you'd take if your trousers were round your ankles and you're bent over and a bit vulnerable

Reality 17th or 18th.
We had a percentage of 60% which is atrocious.
Agree injuries hurt us badly but lots of clubs had large number of injuries and were still very competitive.
Looking forward we just have to hope and pray that all these early draft picks will hang in there for the next couple years .
If they do am confident things will turn quickly.

Personally I think a first rounder and Powell-Pepper would be fair.

I cannot for the life of me understand why we haven’t heard anything further about us pursuing him. The bloke is a contested footy bull, is only 21, ex first round draft pick, his attack on the footy and the way he crashes the packs like his life depends on it is great. I love his hardness at the ball and believe he would provide us with some much needed grunt.

Powell-pepper is an average player with a heap of off field baggage

Not really. I can think only of one team coping with a lot of injuries - Collingwood. Missing best 22 we were the worst together with Melbourne and Collingwood. How did Tigers go before playing Suns while missing 6-7 best 22 or Essendon against WB in the worst game of the season (missing 9 best 22)? Or GWS playing Hawks, WB while missing 6-8 best 22?

I am pretty sure Suns were missing 9-11 best 22 for more than half of the games. On top of it after bye constant losses killed any remaining confidence. The best we were missing 4 at the start of the season. Also when some injured players came back they lacked form, match fitness. We also were putting games into draftees, young players. It was a perfect storm.

We can't afford to go through the same next year. It could turn even more ugly.

In 2019 with a healthy list I would had expect 6-8 wins, 14-15th on a ladder. Wins would do wonders to players confidence. Enough progress to attract decent players, re-sign players.

It can change quickly. Carlton won 2 games and had worse percentage in 2018. But if we get the same injuries list, win wooden spoon, Lukosius, King don't re-sign - we are in real trouble. Time could be running out to turn it around in foreseeable future.

I understand the need for mature bodies but we have been doing that for a while and it’s not working either, Bock, Krakour, Brown, Brennan, Rischitelli, Hanley, Malcheski, GHS and many many more.

If the draft isn’t the answer then bog standard mature bodies aren’t either

If the reports are true, they are offering more years to him.

Can't blame him playing more years at a club that is smashing it at the moment.

Easy decision for him IMO.
Depends whether he wants to play AFL or NEAFL
Not guaranteed of a game up there.

Not much hope Richmond get Sydney stack and pickett thru Spp and mid season draft, Carlton gibbons and deluca and GCS get Sam fletcher and Riodan. Where is the big body utility.

Someone might be able to confirm, but don't the contracts of Fletcher and Riordan expire this year? Fletcher is a swing and a miss I think. But Riordan I can actually see playing AFL. Hopefully we can retain him.

Both already extend their rookie contract I guess why waste time for one yeat and half a year contract.

How about to stay loyal and build a future success together with his young buddies and actually deliver something back. I am sure Bowes, Ainsworth, Fiorini, Ballard, Powell, Rankine, Brodie could get better deals from other teams too. Most of these 13 players who re-signed could go somewhere else too.

Yes, both originally signed until the end of season only.

Fair, I agree, but it is the way AFL is going now, loyalty to clubs is a slowly dying thing. Players moving for success, money and security.

TBH as well loyalty is a 2 way street, say we offer him 2 years, he doesn't get out on the park because of injuries, he would be tossed aside like an oily rag, no chance the club would continue by him then. AFL careers are only finite and you need to extract the best deal for yourself these days.

I can't believe I agree with you. No guarantee GCS could continue if after priority pick the team still at the bottom for a few year.

No doubt it's 2 way street. Suns can only build the best environment and hope players will build close relationships and stay together. But without wins even best environment will not save Suns from players exodus. Ah Chee was probably overpaid the last 2 years, club invested into him, granted him personal leaves and got nothing really back now when he built his body and should start delivering. I am sure Witts could go to a winning team, Swallow, Sexton too. Good for Ah Chee but no admiration from me. Going to Lions is another aspect I don't like.

Maybe the Melbourne idiots are correct, AFL should dissolve Suns. With the current players movement system and after 7 years of mismanagement, the odds are stacked up strongly against Suns to succeed short-term. I just feel it will be make or break next year.
