2019 Draft

He kicks like a basketballer, certainly not a natural which to me is a worry. Kicking is super important in a high draft pick.
Given our game plan revolves around getting the ball moving forward any way possible, not sure we're overly fussed if the kids kicking style isn't the most textbook going around. The fact is he can find it on the inside, get on the end of it on the outside and does the defensive side of the game pretty well also. Add to that he runs all day and he shapes as a pretty good pick up at our first pick all things considered

Sounds more like a second pick to me, and there are any number of players that can do what you said in our 38-40 picks. Ross, RCD, Stack, Pickett are all new boys going through the midfield, don't think and in and under working class mid is our highest need. Would rather go for a bit more class.

Take the safe bet for me at 19 the kid has to kick not us teaching him Randall fine tuning etc ok .There will be plenty of sliders at 19 make no mistake same at or 3 picks later on.Cooper Stephens looks big and strong kicking looks fine to me.

Dyson Hilder KPB seems to be sliding hope he is at our picks later on.

Singing from the same song book DB. Still concerned Adelaide will pip us on Hilder at 37. They have three picks after 19 and before 38. He is in the same mould as Phil Davis and Jake Lever were for mine. I've got my fingers crossed we package a small move up the draft list. Just get up a couple spots in front of Geelong and Adelaide I think based on conversations out there. If Cooper is there at 19, he's mint. Knock on his kicking is overstated, he drills it often enough to know he can do it when he lowers his eyes.

Do you have Cooper Stephens’ kicking stats there Ace Frehley ?

Rantall my not be our biggest need, but he may just be the best available at that pick and I'd rather we take the best available at our first pick and address needs later on.

FWIW when I did my final rankings this morning we ended up with

Rantall
Ralphsmith
Smith
Sharman
Warner

May not be everyones ideal haul from the draft but when you take the time to rank them in order you quickly realise the dream draft is never going to happen.

The Age National Draft preview of Richmond

RICHMOND

KEY DEFENDERS: Alex Rance, David Astbury, Ryan Garthwaite, Ben Miller

SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Dylan Grimes, Bachar Houli, Nick Vlastuin, Jayden Short, Nathan Broad, Shai Bolton, Liam Baker, Sydney Stack, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, Patrick Naish, Oleg Markov
MIDFIELDERS: Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia, Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, Marlion Pickett, Jack Graham, Jack Ross, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Kamdyn McIntosh, Luke English, Fraser Turner
KEY FORWARDS: Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Mabior Chol, Noah Balta
SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Kane Lambert, Daniel Rioli, Jason Castagna, Josh Caddy, Jack Higgins, Jake Aarts
RUCKS: Ivan Soldo, Toby Nankervis, Callum Coleman-Jones

The dominant side of the last three years, the Tigers won the grand final in a canter and are oozing quality. However unlike 12 months ago when they brought in Tom Lynch, Richmond have been content to head to the draft this time around. They’d been hopeful of landing an extra selection at the back end of the first round via free agency compensation for Brandon Ellis but had to settle for a second round selection, meaning that the Tigers have three picks out of four between 38 and 41. With their first pick at 19, the Tigers have been linked to South Australian defender Will Day although it’s tough to envisage him slipping through Port Adelaide’s grasp given Port have three picks between 12 and 18. Classy Victorian small Trent Bianco - an impressive character who captained Oakleigh to the NAB League premiership - looks to be in the mix in this region as does West Australian defender Trent Rivers , with Gold Coast also showing a fair bit of interest. Jay Rantall - who blitzed the field in the two kilometre time trial at last month’s draft combine - has also been linked to the Tigers. While Richmond managed to cover the loss of Alex Rance for most of the season, both he and David Astbury are approaching the twilight of their respective careers, and Richmond may look to succession planning. South Australian Karl Finlay and West Australian Jake Pasini both fit the bill and should be available when Richmond have the bulk of their picks.

Yeah well if you're going to keep quoting me, you can't also expect me to run along too.

It was one of your members that pulled me over here to start with, and the rest of you just piled in with silly comments on what was an amiable exchange.

It's not as though anyone warned me about the low numeracy levels in here either.
I honestly assumed that generations of dosing up your smack would have ingrained the basics of adding and subtracting into your supporter base.
l guess you've all just been getting foilies for so long now that one is one, and two is one and another one..

any chance you could shut up?

If rantall is such a good prospect why isnt he projected to go high than richmonds pick?

i like the sounds of him it seems a bit fishy

Hilder at 196/91 and a proper defender sounds a good option and ready to go. If he is gone however there seems to be several more 'bigs'; Ruscoe, Sharman, Pasini, Jeka etc.

maybe a bit undersized or whatever but seems to be options

Harrison Jones seems higher rated than Hilder by most in the know too

I don't subscribe to best available because it is so subjective. Unless there is a steal that you cannot ignore, I think you need to go for best available for most needed position. We are a rebounding classy half back, a tall (196cm+) defender and a Riewoldt replacement short on our list (subjectively). I don't think we need a mid unless they are a gun.

I have it on good authority that pies and dons and possibly hawks are chasing our first pick. Not sure how they plan on doing it though.
I'm assuming they want to trade from next years draft for it, but I'm not sure I'd be wanting us to do that.
Only club I think who would be a chance to trade up for it would be a team like North as we'd want 2 picks between 20 & 37 for it, even if we have to throw in a later pick as well.

I'm really hoping with our 3 consecutive picks that we can get Hilder, Smith & Ralphsmith, add in Trent Rivers/Will Day/Cooper Stephens with Pick 19 and I'll be wrapped. De Koning, Philp or Georgiades would be good too.

In rankings order

I have Rowell Anderson Green Flanders D.Stephens Serong & Robertson as the top midfielders

Then I have Bianco Weightman Rivers C.Stephens Maguinness Day Rantall Schoenberg Philp Sharp & Mead as the second tier.

As I said earlier Rantall may not be our biggest need but he may just be the kid we have ranked highest on our list when our pick rolls around.

Then again it may be someone like Sam De Koning.

That's the thing with us as fans, we don't get to know the kids as well as the clubs recruiters do where they profile them to the fullest to know every single detail. We all make our picks based of limited public knowledge and the opinions of a handful of people who do go and watch the kids weekly. So when we see a 1 minute highlight package that shows a brief glimpse of their disposals and then read a few hundred words of condensed information and make a call on whether they are worth being selected.

Like everyone I have a wish list but after sitting down and taking time to look at what other clubs might do as well, my final result was nothing like my wish list draft.

By looking at the draft-watcher's rankings, this is the final ranking I have.
I expect the key position players to move up the rankings due to there not being too many of them.
Not so sure with rucks - after Luke Jackson there appear to be 3 reasonably rated - depends who needs one and how many of those decent ones they think will last until their next pick.
Cooper Stephens looks about right for our first pick, I would be rapt if Josh Worrell was still available.
For our 39, etc picks, there is a small chance that Finlay or Hilder are available, otherwise some of Sharman, Pasini, Jeka, Riccardi should still be available if we want to go that way.
Otherwise plenty of midfielder, forwards, defenders will be around, depending on who we rate.

We all thought Prestia was a shit kick early on, now look at him, kicking lasers to Lynch. Rantall could do likewise. I wouldn’t say someone like Treloar is a particularly great kick either, but these sort of mids are worth their weight in gold with all the heavy lifting and grunt they provide

Agree with who we're needing list wise, but disagree on us not needing a midfield type with, Edwards is 32 next year Cotchin 30, Martin 29, Lambert Pickett Caddy & Prestia 28.

Next wave coming through consists of Graham (22 years old 39 games) Naish (20 & 2) Higgins (20 & 33) RCD (19 & 0) English (19 & 0) Ross (19 & 7) & Turner (18 & 0).

IMO we need to keep adding depth through the middle to ensure that as the older group come to the end we have ready made replacements to take their places. Ideally Cooper Stephens or Rivers would be great to get, not sure they will be available though, so if Rantall or Philp or any other mid is our highest rated player at 19 then take them, however if we rate a KPP higher and they are available then take them, but I don't want to see us reaching for someone just because they fill a list need.

Do you have Cooper Stephens’ kicking stats there Ace Frehley ?

No, there is not much in the way of stats available to a pleb like me, mostly of the eye. He played as an under ager in 2018, about a dozen or so games for Geelong Falcons, alongside Sam Walsh and Oscar Brownless. Walsh would have appreciated Stephens in and under work as he was getting a fair bit of ball out to him, so if you could get some stats from that comp, I'd suggest 33% kick, 66% handball ratio. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty. If I had to liken his game style at that stage it would be a bit like Jack Macrae, a very quick of hands extractor. 2019 was cruel, breaking a leg early in his third game. That was off the back of a 32 possession game. Champion Data said:

Champion Data says: Stephens was the 13th highest rated underage player at the 2018 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and averaged 19 disposals and 100 ranking points in the NAB League that year. In Round 2 in 2019, before getting injured, he won 32 disposals, 16 contested possessions, eight clearances and kicked a goal.

This was suggested about him earlier this year while he watched on:

AFL DRAFT WATCH. Stephens averaged 23 disposals per game for the Falcons in their final four outings of 2018, feeding it off to the likes of subsequent AFL draftees Sam Walsh, Ned McHenry and Oscar Brownless in Geelong’s midfield.

He won at least 22 touches in both of his completed NAB League Boys matches this year, but Stephens thinks the closing stages of last season remain the best indicator of what he’s capable of on the field.

“My game kind of came together then, both inside and outside the contest,” Stephens said.

“As much as I’m an inside player, I did also find a bit of the ball on the outside where I could use my legs and my kicking. Getting the ball out to Sam Walsh and Ned McHenry makes you look pretty good as well.

“That period definitely gave me the confidence that I was up to the level and I could play against anyone in the draft pool this year.

“The draft is a bit of an unknown for me, though; I’m not sure where I’m going to fall. I suppose at the start of the year there wasn’t much talk about me anyway, so as long as I get picked at the end of November, I’ll be very happy.”

He is coming out of great system, is a great leader and organiser of midfield play, often up and back through the corridor. His kicking is neat, you don't him banging it long though, because it's his inside vision and awareness that seperates him enough from many of his peers that makes you say, yeah get the ball down to Cooper because he will extract it forward to one of us going passed him. Also picked this up from Poxtel if you still have your doubts:

foxfooty.com.au says: A broken leg restricted Stephens to less than a handful of games in 2019 (2 actually), but if his endurance results at the combine are anything to go by, the Nat Fyfe lover could well be a draft steal for the club who snaps him up. Looms as a second-round sleeper.

I think we need to be brave and take a kid who if he had of played through 2019, we would all be counting him somewhere in the top 10. He won't get to Pick 38. I'd offer up Pick 19 and 38 to Brisbane for 21 and 34 and try and get C.Stephens and D.Hilder ahead of Geelong and Adelaide! But then, I'm just here on Big Footy and don't have the Club resources - what would I know! :D

Stephens looks good with his hands in the contest but this was my concern; almost every kick highlight is cut off before it reaches its target... Makes me think he missing his target regularly so he's removed from the videos.

Don't sweat it Rocky, the ones cut off look like they were from the 2018 Elim final when he played as an underager, and those kicks found a target. The one where it looked like it was just over the top of teammate as the vision was cut failed to show his teammate was out with no one around him and it was better over the top for him to run on, as he did, and was then able to squeeze it through to Sam Walsh for a good passage of play that got them back in the game. Any other kick would have slowed play up. The other was a pinpoint pass, his teamate was knocked over and received a 50, but but his teammate kicked it stupidly to the opposition.

He is not a massive kicker of the ball, but in our system he will flourish, just as Prestia has.
