2019 Draft

Has there ever been a year where so many 'Experts' have selected the same player to go to a club as late as Cooper Stephens to Richmond

But what a buzz would it be if we had a choice Brodie Kemp / Cooper Stephens

Surely Kemp won't last to 19 (or 22 whatever it ends up)? It's why Cooper Stephens, if he can slip that low, would be a good get. That and Hilder in the second round. With so many variables, I can't see how anyone can predict much after Pick2. It could be fascinating to see it all unfold if Clubs get a bit inventive. Given the AFL have invited a set number of draftees to the Draft, I do wonder how prescribed the first round will be or has to be..........

I'd avoid forcing the issue of drafting a tall and stick to the best player available tact. Free agency and trading are where we should look to fill the Key Position player void long term.

Just look at what the dogs have done in one off season with Bruce and Alex Keath.

That's ok for forwards but i've long subscribed to the theory that defenders need to come up together and learn each others' habits intricately to be most effective. Think Rance, Astbury and Grimes and being drafted within a few years and become really well bonded on and off field.

Yeah I get that but at our pick the talls around our selection are just as talented as the smalls in my opinion. De Koning for mine I have rated at number 12 for instance. We can afford to pick him and develop him for 3 years. He could turn out to be an absolute steal. Ditto Harrison who has shown glimpses of tearing games away but needs development. I believe he will get to around 198cm, his athletic capabilities are off the hook and he can pack mark with a beautiful kick. If developed right, would he be a better selection than the mids or flankers left at our pick? Dime a dozen types?

For me O’Neill and Perez could be got around our next selection, is there a huge difference between them and the other mids we can get at 22? McGuinness I have rated who would but Hawks will match. Bergman and Day if they fall but very doubtful.

Look whomever we get we will make a bloody good player so there is no worries there and our recruiters are the best in the business so there should be no panic. It’s just my opinion that both De Koning and Jones, maybe Worrell at our selection are best available and would solve an issue long term so we don’t need to overpay come trade time for a tall.

Garthwaite, Miller and what is Baltas best position? Who replaces Astbury? Jack Riewoldt? I’d sleep easier knowing we have a grade talent waiting in the wings.

I agree with this. I think a class replacement for either Asbury and Riewoldt is pretty high on our list. If it is back I think height is important, if up forward can almost be a third tall as I think CCJ will play forward/ruck sooner than later, and combined with Lynch we might be a bit tall if we add another 195cm plus type. So perhaps a forward that can play tall or small like Elijah Taylor, who looks a star would be the type. Bit of a reach but I reckon class is class and he looks as classy as any.

how do you rate Baxter next year?

I maintain if a tall is there we should take them if it’s Worrell, De Koning or Jones. For the sake of our long term future I think that’s what our list requires.

There’s a few, I haven’t seen enough of Cooper Stephens to form an opinion so I’ll leave him out, I like Sharp, Rivers (who I like as a mid) and Ralphsmith. Think we should bid on McGuinness as he’s definitely worthy and would be a great choice. Good player.

In a dream world Will Day or Myles Bergman drop to us but that has a less than 1% chance I feel.
Gut feel has me thinking that we'll go the unexpected path in the draft and take a couple of KPP types with our first 2 picks. Maybe Worrell/Jones/De Koning first up and Hilder/Georgiades second pick.

Adding any 2 of them would give us CCJ Chol Balta Garthwaite Miller Worrell/Jones/De Koning & Hilder/Georgiades as a young group to develop in the VFL and hold us in good stead for the future.

Unfortunately judging by the latest whispers De Koning Jones & Worrell will all be taken in 3 of the 4 picks before our first pick, leaving us with the choice of Rivers or Stephens.

We do have that young academy kid Baxter next year.
But i'll be content in who we get.

They only hold us in good steed if good enough and develop.

What are peoples thoughts on Riccadi who supposedly won best in VFL?

I have a preference for Georgiades as a substitute for JR but not for our first pick. I think he might have enough versatility he will not upset the RFC applecart

knightmares final phantom is out to for anyone interested

Bianco@27?
A scenario like this could be a blessing.

If a player like him slides this far, then offering our future 1st actually becomes attractive to oppo clubs.

EDIT: Before I get criticised for this, its not overs from us. Even worst case scenario for us is Top 4 in 2020 and our pick of 15 will be pushed back to low 20's at a minimum with all these Academy selections. In a already week draft, a player like Bianco at high 20's this year is probably better value.
