It’s because we have been ordinary with first-round picks under Hardwick’s tenure. They hardly ever end up the best in the competition (or even the best in our draft haul), which is what they supposed to end up being.

They tend to either be vanilla (or “safe” types), or a stretch to begin with. The last first-rounder that has ended up a star of the competition is Dustin Martin. RCD and Jack Higgins have still time on their side, but it’s safe to say that any first-rounder between Dusty and Higgins has not become a star of the competition.

The club is good in most other things like gamestyle, fitness, on-field and off-field performance and picking beyond the first round, but they just don’t have the first-round track record to make me comfortable with picking a bolter.

Vlastuin one of the best defenders in the competition, Rioli redefined our entire system. Robertson would have been a vanilla safe pick.

I completely forgot about Vlastuin. He is certainly one of the stars of the competition.

However, Rioli ain’t going alright. He’s currently a fringe player.

In fairness, most commercial draft experts mainly watch National Championships and TAC Cup finals. Dow did his best work away from them.

Richmond I know had scouts watch him a lot. We know what we are getting. His ability to go forward and take a Mark makes this juicy.

RCD is not a follow. Thats why we wanted Cooper and Philps plus to help Dusty rest forward and provide strength in the contest

I never said that we should have pick Robertson though. As I said in the post above, Vlastuin completely escaped my mind and Rioli doesn’t look like a star player to me.

Go tell Dimma Rioli is a fringe player and see how he responds.

Is absolutely essential to our game plan and Dimma says it every week. Doesn't rack up the stats but his pressure efforts continually force turnovers that set up our scoring opportunities.

Although, one thing that we do lack from our young crop is a general midfielder. Someone who we can just plug in anywhere in the midfield, which is what I am assuming Thomson Dow is.

We should have traded our first pick though as I think he’d have been there later in the draft as people said, so we could have potentially had an extra pick in the 30-50 range.

Dow wouldn’t of made it past Sydney’s next pick mate. He’s a bonafide top 25 player. I heard Adelaide had interest too at their next one.

His inside work is beautiful but he’s got that ability to go forward and impact... if we develop him right could be anything.

We should just fire the whole RFC recruiting team and just draft whoever the phantom drafts say we should.
