2019 Expectations

You’d have to think with the drafts we be picked up there would be more than a little optimism that RTB can have us competing in finals by 2020 if not next year.

Do you mean on this Board? I think most posters feel confident about that. There are the factions locked into their points of view about Lyon, but it feels to me like the middle ground is Finals 2020.

I have always felt RTB has the ability to take a side to Finals/GF again, but if he can’t do it with this group within a couple of years, I will seriously doubt that he has the game plan to do so.
Until that time I will back him in.

Still think finals is not likely this year. We have 27 players under 24 still so if the 24+ get injuries we'll be rolling out a really young team again.

If we avoid the injury stick we'll be in the finals race up to our eyeballs. Doubly so if the mature draft picks have an impact.

If there are no 100 point floggings interstate, some more direct play going inside forward 50, more goals scored with some decent forwards ... I think most of us would be happy with. But that would naturally improve our ladder position to being either just in or just outside 8th spot. Definitely I think finishing 8th would be good to get the kids some finals experience.

Finals in 2020 starts with a flag in 2019!

Peel are almost shoe-ins for mine. Schofield gone from Subi definitely helps too. Win the WAFL flag again, develop the list, launch for finals in 2020. (Comes down to player availability obviously).

Generally agree, but there is a chasm between Finals and a GF.

I won't be shocked if we give Finals a nudge this season. That is ambitious, but I really do think the list is now built, though not primed to perform. If it begins to click, then it becomes about injuries and fitness.

Lyon has been the master of getting value out of role players and if he gets more of that happening this season we can move up rapidly. That is the point of bringing in someone like Brewley after all; get the ball rapidly into our now weaponised forward line. He compliments others who are specialists at long kicking from defence and midfield in sHill, Wilson, Darcy and Logue. And that pairs nicely with the running power of bHill, Langdon and Colyer.

That group of players are all ready to deliver, and they now have some forwards to deliver to.

The soft bigotry of low expectations is rife in this thread.

Now we know the outcomes of the trade period, the draw and the draft where we have gone for plug and play types, top 8 in 2019 is the minimum we should be expecting

Caveat on the below statement assumes a fit list and no major injuries.

I expect massive improvement. This year will prove whether the coaches can inplement a game plan or a system that takes advantages of our obvious strengths.

Forward line of Hogan, Lobb, Tabs, Sonny and the next 2 best smalls. This should stretch any defence if they are coached well.

Mids - Fyfe, Mundy, Hills x 2, Cerra, Andy

Back line - hamling, ryan, wilson, logue + next best 2 small defenders.

Bench and ruck - competition for places.

2019 doesn't have to be about rebuilding or developing, the above team should be capable of matching and beating most sides.

Coaching hopefully implements a game plan that takes advantage of our strengths.

They were my expectations this year.

We absolutely must not have any floggings anywhere near 100 pts this coming year. That would be unacceptable with the same list as this year but with the improvements we’ve made to the list, it’s a given.

We must be more consistently competitive this year regardless of wins and losses and ladder position.

Our sports science must improve but I have serious doubts that it will while we still have the same personnel running it.

To achieve what we all know the squad is capable of, we must have our best 25 available for most games and a gameplan that’s relevant.

The recruiters and list managers have done their bit. It’s now up to Lyon and Webber to get the final two pieces to fit.

And then another chasm to winning one. Ross still has to prove that he’s capable of doing that.

I don't care if we get beaten by a hundred at some point during the season as long as the rest of the season is upwards.

I'm not going to throw out the rest of the year if one game goes arse backwards.

We are going to be inconsistent but I expect that when it clicks it will click hard and we will look very good.

Yeah na I don't agree. I liken it to a trainer getting a horse ready for a big race. When Chris Waller hands over the reins to Bowman before the Cox Plate there's not a lot more he can do. Now it's all up to Winks and Bowman.

Seriously. Do you reckon a head coach just stands in a room under the grandstand watching a tv monitor as the game unfolds and then wander back out to greet the players as they walk off after the game.

Terrible analogy. Head coaches have a lot to do with the outcome.

Actually not a bad analogy. Grand finals are not decided by coaching, they are usually won by the best side, including the one that handles the conditions best (one or both of these applied in 2013). Sometimes they are won by the luckiest side on the day (arguably this was the case in Lyon’s other GFs in ‘09 and ‘10 — when St Kilda were the better side in the draw).

You are wasting your words.
