So we'll be in the middle bracket again. Which means one of three splits in terms of double ups:

2 top - 2 middle - 1 bottom
1 top - 2 middle - 2 bottom
1 top - 3 middle - 1 bottom

We're almost certain to get Carlton twice. Hope Hawthorne go out first week so we can have Car/Coll/Haw/Ric twice, plus probably Adelaide

I think we get one of the two QLD clubs as our bottom 1/3rd double up, Adelaide and Melbourne/North as our middle one and GWS plus Rich/Haw/Coll for the top

So we'll travel to QLD, NSW and SA for the double up plus draw Port away and Freo away for 5 interstate trips. Maybe 6 because they love to have us play Sydney up there

I think our double ups may be:

Richmond West Coast
Adelaide North Melbourne (or Geelong)
Carlton

There is no way we don't have one of Col or Haw twice

If any, it would be Hawthorn especially if we play them round 1. We seem to rotate between which of the big 4 we don't play twice. It's Collingwood's turn.

They also usually give us 2 interstate teams twice. Since we'll probably go to Perth twice again, West Coast will probably be one of them.

Ladder currently looks like this:
1 Richmond
2 West Coast Eagles
3 GWS Giants
4 Hawthorn
5 Collingwood
6 Sydney Swans

7 Melbourne
8 Port Adelaide
9 Geelong Cats
10 North Melbourne
11 Essendon
12 Adelaide Crows

13 Fremantle
14 Western Bulldogs
15 St Kilda
16 Brisbane Lions
17 Gold Coast Suns
18 Carlton

In bold are locked into their 1/3 of the ladder already (or close enough to it).

Lol okay, so. We virtually always get rematches against Collingwood and Richmond, have done 7/9 times since 2010. If that is to be the case again, then we are almost automatically locked into a 2-2-1 fixture. If we are also locked into a rematch against Carlton, which has also happened 7/9 times since 2010, then that means the only thing left to decide is which two middle six teams we'll get. If they have to be interstate teams, currently that'd be Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

I think I'd prefer to not have a replay against Carlton and get Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne as the return fixtures instead. If Collingwood could finish 7th or 8th that would also work.

Return fixtures this decade (clubs sorted by current ladder, yellow rows are interstate clubs):

I'd be happy with a rather normal 2x: Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood, Sydney, Port Adelaide/Adelaide
Other wants: West Coast at Etihad, Dockers at Optus, GWS at Etihad, Brisbane at the Gabba, Gold Coast at Metricon

If we become the type of team I'm expecting us to be next year then we won't drop games to the likes of Carlton. The first game against them will be the risk if we haven't improved. Their season will be long gone by the time we play them a second time.

Richmond and Collingwood won't be easy matches but it will be important for us to have some big matches at the MCG to prepare us for finals and the challenges that await us there.

Hard to predict how Sydney and the Adelaide teams will be going. I'm tipping Adelaide to be significant improvers, Port to be more of the same as this year and Sydney I expect will be thereabouts again unless their senior players fall off the pace and their kids aren't yet ready to pick up the slack.

You mean like we did in 2016?

It’s actually quite possible.

I suspect Collingwood will be only once next year, with Richmond and Carlton being twice. Hawthorn? Who knows.

As said, I want Geelong twice because I think we have their measure.
