I didnt realise that the two things were related.

fascinating - to kill off some teams in melbourne its required to add one in wa

what a fascinating take.

Of course another way of looking at it would be : new york has the population of australia - and only has two pro football teams

perhaps perth should just stay with two and melbs should just have less?
Perhaps... I’ll let you tell the supporters of the clubs that should cease to exist.

MCG only has about 58k seats for the General Public and club members at AFL matches. People seem to forget this.

Well there is 2 wce v rich so thats a start.
That seems pretty rare nowadays. In terms of evening the fixture, I don't mind the idea that all double up games are against sides from another state, as it evens up the home/away advantage a bit. I don't think we necessarily need 2 Darby's/showdowns/hoedowns every year. Having 1 would probably make it more special to win/lose it each year (see Anzac Day, queen's birthday, Dreamtime etc)

The AFL's top 10 games of the year has just been posted on their website:

10 - Rd 12 CARL (78) def. BRIS (63)
9 - Rd 15 ESS (77) def. GWS (71)
8 - Rd 6 COLL (73) def. ESS (69)
7 - Rd 11 FREM (79) def. COLL (75)
6 - Rd 8 SYD (77) def. ESS (72)
5 - Rd 17 ESS (86) def. NM (81)
4 - Rd 22 BRIS (75) def. GEEL (74)
3 - PF GWS (56) def. COLL (52)
2 - SF GWS (83) def. BRIS (80)
1 - Rd 22 RICH (88) def. WCE (82)

My first thoughts are there are way too many Essendon games. The only ones worthy were the Anzac day match purely for the drama (because the standard in the last was pretty scrappy), and the Tippa goal vs North for the finish and push for finals.

I think the Carlton Brisbane game is there purely because it was the first game after Bolton's sacking. I thought the Carlton Bulldogs game was a far better spectacle with way more momentum swings that was genuinely gripping.

I'm very surprised they left out the Collingwood win in Perth against the Eagles considering the scoreline and top 4 stakes. Also surprised they left out the GWS win against Geelong at GMHBA when Callan Ward did his knee. Recency bias I guess. No mention of the Richmond Geelong PF either, even though it was a tough, close game with momentum swings and everything to play for.

Brisbane's 1 point win vs Geelong and Richmond beating West Coast by 6 points in a game which probably decided who was going to win the premiership in 2019.

Richmond WC was as good game of 2 top teams going 100% at each other as you'll see. WC dominated, Tigers dominated, and in the end it was line ball. Home ground got the Tigers over the line I reckon. Great skills, pressure and no quarter given. Clean but very hard.

The GWS finals wins were great for grit and mental toughness. Signs that they can take that next step, but often awfully scrappy.

Otherwise very good games in the OP.

Round 23, Hawks knock off the Eagles at home. Pies and Tigers rejoice, Eagles finals chances dashed.
Probably the most influential game of the year but certainly not the best

although the ludicrously hot hawthorn chick in front of me attenuated the loss somewhat.

straight to the spank bank!!

Round 4:
Port Adelaide 14-8-92 Versus Richmond 15-9-99 (Adelaide Oval)
No Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Bachar Houli or Jayden Short.

Dominated by Port Adelaide and decimated by absent talent and far from the safety and comfort of the MCG
the Tigers found a way, they write songs of tribute and poetry about this day.

Round 4:
Geelong 11-9-75 Versus GWS Giants 11-13-79 (GMHBA Stadium)

The Giants steeled themselves after losing Callan Ward to an ACL injury to inflict the Cats only loss for the
year at GMHBA Stadium. The silence spoke volumes and as the Village People once famously sang " It's
not fun to play at the GM-HBA".

Round 15:
Fremantle 11-9-75 Versus Carlton 11-13-79 (Optus Stadium)

The talk all week in the build up to the game was no Cripps, no Carlton, but did Carlton listen no they didn't.
They won without Patrick Cripps at the juicy odds of $ 5.60 for the win.

They may not be the purest expression of football, but each of these games tells a story of being far from
home not having everything go your way yet emerging triumphant, jubilant, victorious. Spooky the last
two games had the identical score, very spooky.

Lions @ Freo was a good one to watch

Watching the Lions move the ball in the 1st half was impressive , really high quality football and Charlie Cameron looking unstoppable

See-sawing 3rd quarter sees Freo nibble into the Lions lead

A huge momentum swinging 1v1 contest between L Neale and Nat Fyfe in the Brisbane goal square late in the game that had a bit more significance due to all the talk during the Neale trade

Freo running over the top and the Lions holding on

After the siren kick by M Walters

Freo by a point or so

Lions confirmed as genuine flag chances in my eyes at least
