Think I’d rather rewatch the 1993-1996 seasons than modern footy sometimes
Amen. The game is just not the same, rule changes have ruined the game I grew up watching. Rather than few changes once a decade or so to take into account how the game was evolving (shortening time on in quarters from 25 mins to 20 mins in the early 90s to how holding the ball was umpired later in the 90's) to changes every bloody year for no reason.

From wanting to watch every game possible to now just watching Swans matches and the odd big game

and yet the rules they bring in don't bring that about, scoring in as low as I remember it. It was a panic response to what turned out to a blip in ratings caused by the Commonwealth Games and the FTA matches not being on the main channel in Victoria for a fortnight.

I know nobody watches NASCAR here but even the AFL has made more rule changes than them in recent years! And that is saying something!
Shades of the AFL in V8 Supercars though. Think of Holden as Victorian sides and Ford as non-Vics. Years of Holden dominance and that's fine. 3 rounds of Ford dominance and they have already changed the rules 2 or 3 times to try and nullify the performance of Ford.

Thought the game was still going ok even as recently as 2016, there was some really good footy still being played by a fair few teams....but now there's genuinely only 2 or 3 teams consistently playing a decent brand each year.
New ruck rules have ****** the game more than anything imo (although there's been a fair few shockers introduced over the last 3 seasons).
The no 3rd man up came from nowhere, and was a weird one given every rule is usually intended to reduce congestion....but they removed the best congestion removing weapon teams had. Now you need a dominant ruck to be able to smash it forward regularly enough if you want to break get it out of the pack and very few of the ones capable of doing it choose to do it. Half the time we have part timers doing large amounts of ruck, ball just goes to ground at their feet, rolling pack and congestion increases.

Melbourne were a predictable disappointing team this year but I didn't think they'd be quite this bad. I assumed they'd still make the finals but go nowhere near top 4 or a premiership but for the reasons I thought (young, immature core of leaders and KPF's) they're gonna miss the finals altogether.

Is it the rules or is it the rubbish footballers out there.

This is what happens when you draft marathon runners instead of footballers. That tonight was absolute garbage. Inability to handle the ball, hit a 2 meter handball, a 10 meter kick, playing on and giving it off to players who are in trouble before they've even received it.

This purely comes down to grass roots and what recruiters are looking for. Even watching the pre draft videos of the top draft picks, they are all impressive finding the ball and bursting out of a pack but no one ever focuses on the kick going straight down the throat of the opposition. There are talented actual footballers out there who can't get a sniff because they can't hit 15 in the beep test. Stuff running, I just want to see players hit a fckkn target! They can't even hit the bowl with their piss. It's getting ridiculous now.

I like having a place in footy for big, big guys so I like the no 3rd man up rule. We are paying the price now for not finding one. I think it odd we haven't grabbed one of the yanks at the international combines over the last few years - the NEAFL would be tailor made for them to develop in.

I reckon a zone is the only way to stop the marathon runners and coaches ruining the game. Have 5 players in your attacking half at all times, 1 or 2 inside 50 would be an interesting set up. Could even have the guys nominated with GPS trackers that give them 12 seconds to get back once out in general play - or penalty in the middle of the ground. Nominated players can only be changed via interchange bench.

The amount of injuries would also be cut down I think with the stresses of running far less.

Maybe its my self interest as a Swans fan because having a forward structure imposed on us would be freaking awesome given our coaches can't seem to manage it.

Instead of a free kick, I feel the GPS tracker should emit an electric current for 10 seconds to immobilise the offending nominated players.
