Over the last 30 seasons (1990-2019):
Hawthorn 5 Premierships
Melbourne 10 finals appearances (no. of years in finals)

I'm pretty sure the Hawthorn fans would be glad that merger never went ahead! Not sure about the Melbourne folks!
My understanding is a lot of Melbourne people were against the merger. I have family who voted against the merger in 1996 and they said a lot of members were denied the right to vote and would have voted "no" for merging.

To this day, they find it hard to believe that a supporter base would want to vote in favour of merging. I know the official story is that Melbourne supporters wanted to merge, but it's not as clear cut as it appears on the surface.

But Madgen isn't a KPD!

But we use him as one, he is just undersized.

The issue is he is not taking the half back role off vastly superior players in Howe or Langdon for that mid sized intercept defender. He has neither their pace or leap, nor does he have the same ability.

He did improve in his AFL games this year vs the year previous but imo is and always will be only depth in emergency injury situations.

No real issue with them doing a year of consolidation and him being part of that staying on for 12months as a cat b.
Given our draft hand and lack of viable RFAs this year vs next.
There isn't a lot the club could do this offseason gone without cutting a big name at the last trade period, which may end up a zero sum game but negatively affect 'culture' they are building.

9 seasons!! fu** Tarkyn Lockyer only played twelve.

I’m astounded we’ve had him for so long with so little output if that’s true

Yeah I didn't realise it was 9 seasons either, even though I think he's more talented it's hitting Ben Kinnear and Guy Richards territory.

Still I think if he can get a good run at it he has the talent to make it so not too fussed if he holds a rookie spot for 12months.

Firstly, thanks for a respectful reply and not a smarmy one.

Nowadays a KPF only.... Reid wouldn't make way for a KPD DFA. Not unless that KPD could effectively swing forward.

Magden is not going to significantly improve from another 12 months in the system. He is not and will never be an AFL grade fullback.

Better served as a Goldsack like general defender but lacks speed and the leap and spoil ability of Goldsack. From what I've seen Keane is already at leaping and spoiling.

Magdens only strengths are between his ears... his character and nous. He'd make a fine VFL captain

You're still missing the point. Madgen is a Cat B rookie. None of the KPP types proposed (Walker, Hartley, Brown) are eligible to take a Cat B rookie spot. They can only be taken via trade or via 1 of the drafts to the senior list or the Cat A rookie list. Madgen's retention has absolutely zero impact on whether we sign a depth KPP type unless they're from overseas, or had no football exposure for at least 3 years, and can therefore be listed as a Cat B rookie. The only impact he might have is on the balance of the squad if we were to pick another tall but as the 45th, 46th or 47th player that seems unlikely.

But they are talking of putting Dunn back on the rookie list. So clearly the rookie list spot is there for a Walker, Hartley or Roberts

Try keeping up yourself dodo

If we think we need an extra KPD (I don't think we do) I wouldn't be surprised in we keep that spot available for guys like Dunn, Walker, etc.. and have them fight it out for a supplemental signing just before the season.

I pray your right. Come Rd 1 2020... in Roughead and Moore.... we have only two KPDs who can handle the the 195cm+ 100kg forwards like Lynch, Brown, Hawkins, Franklin, etc.

Magden just can't. Keeping him only increases the likelihood that we will call upon him to play a role he will fail in as soon as Moore or Roughead go down. Surprisingly most punters on here seem okay with that.

Dunn could before, but for mine it's a long shot he is still up to it. Without taking on a further mature KPD we are are relying on Moore, Roughead and Magden... cause Kelly and Keane aren't up to it come Rd 1 2020.

It's like the club has learnt nothing after 2018... where if we weren't a KPD short we probably win that flag

How do you know Keane won’t be up to it? He was named as emergency a few times this year. Another preseason in the gym and on the track working alongside Roughead and Moore will help him. It’s a big assumption to make saying he won’t be ready.

Who is your suggestion for a Cat B KPD, that would be capable if Moore & Roughy go down?

I rate Howe as a KPD. Yeah, he's not ideal for Lynch and Hawkins, but I'm comfortable with him against just about anyone else, and I'd probably prefer him to the DFA guys you're talking up.

How many blokes do you want us to have on the list to cover Tom Lynch and Hawkins? If we need 3 blokes on the list as cover to match up on Tom Lynch or Hawkins, how many do we need who can match up on the even more dangerous Martin and Dangerfield - I don't think we've really got anyone who I'm confident can match up on those two guys.

Went to read a HS article online regarding Goddard suggesting we had the best list going into 2020, and its time the Pies deliver, only to see it has been removed.
Did BJ change his mind about us having the best list, or did Tiger supporters get so incensed, they flooded the HS with complaints!!

1. Howe is better served to the teamas an intercept marker
2. It's not just Hawkins and Lynch. There's Franklin, Brown, Hawkins, Lynch, Riewoldt, Daniher, Cameron, etc, etc

All 194cm+ players who'd for one reason or another give Magden a bath and all players too big for Howe, Shaz, etc

I understand a bit better where you are coming from now in terms of wanting another ready to go KPD for depth. I think it's a valid concern. I just reckon Madgen is the wrong target because he is essentially a free hit and free list spot. I think in terms of list balance, with both Goldsack and Dunn retired, there is merit in the idea we use one of those list spots to bring in a mature KPD option. That doesn't need to be at Madgens expense though for all the reasons already discussed. In that scenario, you'd need to be comfortable taking the salary hit though because I reckon those options are a minimum 250k plus per year.

We still need more key depth. Roughead delivered in defense, forward & ruck. If we can replicate that with a Brown or Walker(both can play forward or back) as delisted free agents & draft a KPF (Ricardi please) we should be in good stead short and long term.
But our salary cap may have an influence here if we are only offering 1 year deals in order to best resign Grundy, DeGoey & Moore. In which case having a free hit on Madgen is common sense . Still prefer Kelly and Keane to supplant him though.

Speaking of Levi.. wtf. He did his ACL two months ago. Hard nut. [emoji51]

No Cat B rookie (why are people obsessed with having a full roster of these?). Take a DFA like Walker rather than banking on Magden as a fullback when either Moore or Roughead inevitably go down
Walker & Madgen shouldn't be in the same convo.

Anyway you gave Quicky a like so hopefully you understand more where I'm coming from.:thumbsu:
