Madgen isn't key position height so some of the comparisons aren't very fair, 3rd tall maybe but not KPD. And aren't we sticking with him because it's convenient? ie: part of the same strategy as Wills Reid Varcoe, any new signings will have to be offered years and money before we know where we stand with De Goey, Moore, Grundy and Pendlebury but these guys we can hang on to for the minimal period (12mths) on a packet of chips, it's a list management strategy right?

I thought Madgen was on the list so we would have the strongest basketball team.

I don't think they see him as a competent KPD but they still live in hope he might well be one day. I don't see it personally.

Roughhead, Moore, Howe, Shaz, Langdon with Murphy, Keane and Kelly developing - we have the defensive skies covered already. We don't need to recruit additional aerial defender depth, with or without Madgen. He's just a Cat B player who hasn't had much time back in the game who can already provide 3rd tall depth and may develop into something better in the future. If he was Cat A, you'd probably cut him, but unless we are targetting a different Cat B option, there's no reason why you wouldn't retain him.

Without being 100% certain on the rules, even if we are targetting another Cat B kid, we'll probably have a LTI at some stage and will be able to promote Madgen until the end of the season, thus creating a vacancy for an additional Cat B kid anyway.

I wouldn't consider Dunn until the midseason draft or the end of the supplemental signing period at the very earliest. If he's fit and playing good footy - consider him if we have a spot available and no other urgent needs. But the difference between Dunn and some of the other names being bandied around is that if Dunn gets back to full fitness, he might be best 22 rather than just depth.

Yeah, it doesn’t work that way. Cat B upgrades during the year are temporary, the only way to create a cat b list vacancy is to delist another cat b player.

The other risk is that he may not be willing to go flat out for recovery unless he's on a list.

I wouldn't be rushing to take him, but if we get to midseason - the usual suspects get injured - Moore, Langdon, Shaz. and we decide Murphy, Keane and Kelly can't play AFL KPD yet. Midseason draft - come on down Lynden Dunn. The stars would have to align pretty badly for our other defenders in order for them to align well enough for Dunn for me to add him, but at the same time those stars do often seem to align pretty badly for our other defenders.

We have benefited previously from some of these Category B rookies such as Magden, and if we plan on being a choice for potential future Category B rookies then we need to make sure we are giving them opportunity and time to make the transition to becoming AFL contracts. I have no issue with him being offered another year, he's certainly improved and given us some service in his time.

I think we are in agreement then. If the three usual suspects are injured as usual ( plus Reid, making it four) and none of the three developing players ( four if you count Madgen) step up..... then the season is probably over anyway

That happened in 2018 and it wasn't season over. A lesser defender than Dunn came back from a knee injury to help get us within an inch of a flag. If it had have been Dunn returning...

Probably overlooking the benefit of keeping a guy like Dunn on the list here, even just for a year as depth and an on-field leader/coach in the VFL. I think Keane and Kelly and even Madgen could really flourish playing alongside him in defence, much like Grundy and Witts did when they had Hudson there to guide them.
