I’ve liked what he’s shown, I guess it may come down to exit interviews and his desire to sign on. Looks talented if he can get body right. Asking for 13 as well is too cheeky. It would be a straight swap for that selection if it’s fair value.
Seems heavily slighted in their favor to be honest

The Giants have suggested they are willing to match a Coniglio free-agency deal, depending on the amount offered, if their midfielder decides to leave, though they remain optimistic that he will spurn offers from the Blues and Hawthorn and stay.

GWS, meanwhile, have met Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs, in an indication that Jacobs is strongly interested in a move to the Giants.

Just being realistic - Caldwell for pick 5 isn't fair value a year after being pick 11. Players don't go up in value after one year unless they've been a star.

Not the most important re-signing and I thought it would be done at the end of the season but it is good to have the versatility he offers on the list and importantly I think he has improved this year as a player and I think he could reliably play as a 3rd defender/swingman/ruck relief.

I cant see the club entertaining a trade for any of the 1st year players as the salary's are low compared others and I think a more realistic trade target for any clubs would be Bonar

I think what the article is saying is that the interested clubs will likely have to trade for the player and it will be interesting how the AFL treats the Hawks in this matter as they have not had a 1st round pick since they used 2 in 2015 and I would expect a top 5 pick and another pick in the 10-18 range is what the club would expect in return

While Jacobs is not my 1st choice if he is interested in joining the club i would be ok with him on a 1 year contract maybe with a trigger for a 2nd year but he does have the same issue as Mumford in that he is not the most mobile ruck

Did you watch the draft video? St Kilda rated him very highly and tried desperately to get him. The only reason they didn’t take him was that they were locked into Max King. Look it’s just one of their supporters shooting the breeze and won’t happen but just banter.

I don’t think anybody doubts Caldwell’s talent, if he stays on the park he will be a 200 game player but the if is his soft tissue injuries. If they come right he gets there if they don’t he’s Harley Bennell.

From the AFL.com.au trade talk video it was mentioned that the club is linked to Nick Robertson from the Lions, 24 yrs old with 72 games and 191cms and listed at 97kgs so a big boy and generally a defender/defensive mid and I think he has been reasonably durable. He would add to the depth of the club and it is likely he is cheap in terms of SC and I would think a 3rd rd pick would be enough and he could see opportunity for senior game time at the Giants. Originally from Perth but he has spent 6 years at the Lions so it is possible and fits with the historical picking up of recycled players by the club

That's interesting. I had thought of him with some discussion around that he was likely to part ways with Brisbane. I'm not sure whether that means that Buntine is on his way out, or whether the two can exist in the squad at the same time. From what I can tell (and drawn from some Lions board posting) he's got a great work ethic but no more than a solid player. Still, he would bring 72 games worth of experience, but it depends what role he's perceived to fill (and other moves) as to whether I would think it worth the trade.

Similar to Buntine but more leg speed and he has that mongrel to go in for his teamates

Bit of a basic thug imho. A list filler and very low priority. More a GCS guy to help a young list in my mind.

Ruck, agile mid, classy half back. These are the priorities for me.

If we trade up high so we can get ahead of a bid on Tom Green than Hayden Young or Lachie Ash make some sense as the replacement for Heath Shaw. Both are nice half backs that use the ball well. This might be a realisation that Cumming is not the man. Hard to be absolute on that but on the limited play he has shown he’s not elite.

We need speed and precision, these are the glaring parts to our game. Green brings a tall extractor and clearance king but we need speed and class to compliment the bulls.

If we find a very good ruck and bring in Green plus one or two other nice kids it’s not too bad but we really do need to hold onto Cogs. If he goes I’d say a legitimate flag tilt goes with him in the short term.

Not sure if you're thinking of the right player... He's only had one suspension that I'm aware of, though it came out of a push and shove with Himmelberg (copped him high) so probably that's all you recall of him given he's not exactly a household name. Definitely plays hard but rarely dirty in a thuggish form. If you said scragger, he has elements of that - he can play defence in the Rampe mold but not as football smart.

Good description. If you compare him to others on the list he'd actually be a drop in replacement for Tomlinson - harder at the ball, but no ruck chop out ability (though arguably that's also true of Tomlinson), very similar disposal and running ability. He'll be a lot cheaper though which I think is part of the attraction.

We shouldn’t be touching Jacobs or Ryder. Ceglar is a much better fit. He can fill the role for a year or two while Briggs builds his skill set.

I hope we target some more mature inside players in the trade period. Ones that are happy to compete for a spot.

Our mids next year at this stage are:
Ward, Cogs, Taranto, Hopper, Kelly, DeBoer, Whitfield, Caldwell, Hately, Bonar, Shipley.

A really young group when you look at them together. Injuries to our most experienced mids has hurt. I’d be happy to see us trade out Bonar for a mid who is about 27.

In 72 games, plus the usual captain risky stuff we see from our own Mummy and Greene. Plays “on the edge” which in his case is making up for a lack of talent, no thanks.

I remembered the first one - felt it was laughable at the time that it was reported while definitely being stupid. Didn't remember the second.

Giant Pete - Port have said they would trade out Powell-Pepper apparently. Any thoughts regarding him? I know he's younger than what you've postulated. I'm not a fan personally, but if you're looking for some inside grunt then you might look at him as an option. Averages around 19 touches, 3 clearances & 5 tackles per game. Less than a Taranto but more than Bonar. Pretty durable too; hasn't missed many games from injury. Probably would need to pay a late first maybe early second round pick (perhaps a Tommo compo pick or Bonar trade pick if you want to go that way). Who else would you think about?

And I think it's just journalistic rumours about Scott Lycett being dissatisfied at Port, but should we rattle that cage? Particularly if we lose Cogs should we see if we could entice him away? He'd be a great fit for us I'd think.

I would say no to Powell Pepper, but a definite yes to Lycett.
When I watch Powell Pepper, he seems to ball hunt a lot and doesn’t show much awareness. He’s not a good kick either. Doesn’t get enough of it. Made mistakes off field. I don’t think he fits the bill.

Lycett is a great fit, even better than Ceglar. He’s mobile and competitive... and they don’t seem to have a lot of confidence in him at Port. He’d be on good money and a few years in his contract though.

This on both counts. Exactly my opinion of SPP.

SPP will be a bit of the same same if we targeted him

Inside but slow

Our contested ball and clearance numbers have been good even with key inside players out

I actually think of more concern is the leaky defense. We have taken a step backwards this year in that regard. Teams are scoring too easily

Leaky defence has largely been because of lack of pressure at the source. The last two weeks we have been beaten badly at the source.
I think of people available at the moment, someone like Greenwood from the Crows would be a good addition.

So, in relation to getting in a mature inside mid, I'm just not sure there are too many decent mids in that age bracket that we'd want to pick up. Perhaps Hugh Greenwood is one of a few looking to move from their current team, but I suspect he wants a Victorian side. If we hold onto Cogs, with Ward back from injury and if we take Tom Green in the draft, I'd be relatively satisfied with the guys we've got. Any time we lose established players and then suffer injuries in the same role depth will always be a factor. I'd acknowledge that the group would be on the young side, but as we've seen this year with Taranto & Hopper given opportunity they can shine. (And TBH, I think we need to give guys like Caldwell a decent run in first grade.) And having good youngsters will deter mature mids 'looking for more opportunity' from coming here because they are more likely to be just backup in case of injury or the youngsters not coming on.

I look at the squad in terms of a rule (of thumb) of 7. That is, 7 x KPD/small-med defenders/KPFs/small-medium forwards & 14 mids (plus 4 rucks) as a rough squad composition of 46. Obviously the midfield is a mixture of inside, outside & balanced mids.

Our current squad midfield plus likely 2019 draft looks like :

Ward, Coniglio, Hopper, Taranto, Bonar, Hately, Caldwell, Shipley, de Boer, O'Halloran, Tom Green, Kelly, Whitfield, Tomlinson, Deledio, Sheridan, Perryman (depending on whether you consider him a back or an inside mid or a utility)

So, yes, if you move on a couple of players such as Tommo & Bonar as some would like then there would be room, but I still think they'd look at that squad and think that their opportunities would be somewhat limited by the potential talent there.

If we lose Coniglio then I would certainly agree that getting a mature mid should be greater priority.

Any thoughts of options other than Greenwood?
