I can cop that Papley and Martin deals weren’t completed. What I can’t accept is that we haven’t had a small forward for 2 years and we had no plan B. Betts is a nice addition but will his body push through another season? Butler walks to the Saints for nothing and here we are having played Gibbons, Lang, De Luca and Silvagni as small forwards.

This was our number one priority so now it will have to be a state league small forward or a first round pick that we can hope make an impact around the goals.

Whilst im not going to comment on the Martin/Papley deals

I think that Butler was never going to happen and just after the medical at Ikon park it seemed he was always going to St Kilda , Not sure if it was $$$ or something else but it appeared like he selected the Saints and they selected him so cant really lay the entire blame on SOS there

You’d think that Newnes will be looked at now with another list spot to fill.

Hoping that Martin is a PSD pickup.

#9, 43, 57 & 70 at the draft (if not packaged up on draft night, or before to jump up the queue a little further).

Deluca likely to get another run at it.

We will get Martin in the PSD. With any luck Cunningham will get a better run at it and then Betts coming in will mean De Luca and Lang won't get near a senior game.

He's only played 5 games this year... and 45 for his career so far (5 seasons). There might be something underlying that came out in the medical. And a lot of the other guys people are mentioning that we should have gone for haven't played a lot of AFL this year either. And I think that the club is done with filling up with depth players now!

Does he?

This seems to be the first year under his watch we haven't walked away from the trade period with an amazing result for the footy club, and most reasonable people I think would acknowledge it mostly wasn't his fault.
Up until now his list building has been great. But SOS doesn't seem to rate the small forward position at all which is outdated 90s thinking.

That's the problem with the list he built at GWS too. all-world talent on every line but no small forwards.

So 6 senior spots to fill:
9
43
57
Martin (PSD or DFA
?
?

Do we take another couple of late picks in the draft or pick up another DFA or two?

It doesn't operate like that. Butler isn't going to wait around for Carlton & Sydney to organise a deal for Papley. He wasn't a priority, and therefore went looking for other options.
For what he would have cost butler should never have been dependent on papely. When I saw we cooled off our interest in butler i assumed it was because papely was 100%. no other explanation other than poor trading strategy from SOS...

We are now five Silvagni trade periods through and he hasn’t brought in a single capable AFL small forward. Maddening. It’s obvious to every football fan that a major flaw of Carlton has been how easy it is for opponents to move the ball from defence to attack. We’ve done nothing about it. 2020 will be another season where squares try to go into round holes with the likes of Fisher playing as small forwards.

Same goes for the midfield. Again all this talk about this off-season and how we’d finally see some help for Cripps. Nothing.

The list is still far too young and devoid of players in their mid 20s. Whiffing like we did this trade period simply means another season banking on all these young skinny players making big progress. In reality they don’t all grow like that. At some stage the older crop of the draftees brought in are going to get sick of getting nowhere as a team. It’s a reality. The club cannot just keep writing off years as development.
