I'd probably rather us back in Matt Owies at this stage.

Thought he was stiff not to get an opportunity in the back end of the season. Showed a lot.

He's one that I think will surprise in 2020.

Heard a lot of talk about us needing a small forward, but not much about his development and potential to fill that role for us next year.
Here here I agree wholeheartedly showed plenty in the second half of the year and if he continues that form, which after a full pre season he should, will push his way into the senior side, I have really high hopes for Owies good at pressure and tackling as well as hitting the scoreboard, kicked a bag of 5 didn’t he, maybe even twice.

Yea, bags of 5 and 4.

Kicked 1 goal in his first 5 VFL games compared to 16 goals in the final 12 rounds.

Keep in mind we were beaten quite comprehensively in some of those matches, so he wouldn't have had many opportunities either.

Next years signings won't be stressing out our List Managers too much at all.

Even this far out it's really only Marchbank and Plowman as relative 'must keeps'
Really want to see Williamson and Macreadie in that group also. Get these two going and we'll be some way in front.

The next two in line I'd like to see show plenty in 2020 are BSilvagni and Cottrell. There's really something about Cottrell that looked good this year.

Body of work aside, I struggle to see someone of Beatson's calibre joining us.

Agresta worked under Beatson and has said great things about him. Mick moved to Carlton for higher duties. Would he want to go back to working under Beatson again?

And before you say Beatson would be replacing SOS, I'm not sure I 100% understand how we currently have both a head of list strategy as well as a list manager....

SOS oversees list management and recruiting, and that's likely the source of the friction with Liddle, i.e. is his position somewhat ancillary given the hire of Brad Lloyd.

Agree, his record is fairly bloody ordinary. His previous record at Brisbane before being moved on was horrendous. Very overrated recruiter. I think Sydney's current list is a sign of that. Burner of early draft picks and there is very little to suggest he's some gun when it comes to late picks. Some Sydney supporters blame it on the go home factor but I could not bring myself to warm to his recruiting.

I think our list and salary cap would make enticing a good recruiter fairly easy as long as our CEO doesn't put them off.

A few nice hits there but anyone semi-competent can have some hits every now and again. At our list management worst we managed a few hits too!

Not including incoming trades but I can do that extra leg work if people would like me to.
Very good post. I actually think if you go through every side like this and take out FS/academy players and top 15 picks you soon realise how hard it is to find players unless they are gifted or you get very high picks. I guess you really only need to find 2-3 long term players per year.

We weren't able to get Papley, unfortunately.

AFL.com is reporting that former Bulldog Lukas Webb is training with the club. Thoughts? Can't say I know a lot about him apart from he's injured a lot.

EDIT: Looked at his stats and they're certainly not inspiring. Can someone shed some light on why we're giving him a crack?

Stoked for Webb, he deserves another crack. Absolutely beautiful foot skills and fairly decent overhead would be his strongest points. At a team with a bit less midfield depth (i.e. Blues) I'm sure he can make it. We just have too many injury-prone midfielders and he's been on our list 5 years, so it made sense to move him on. For minimum wage and a 1 or 2 year contract (possibly even a rookie spot) the Blues will be laughing. Definitely worth the low risk gamble
