I can certainly see Newnes, Silvagni, Casboult and Newman as the prime takers in the bench rotation.
Not sure Cunningham is a lock either. Reckon we rate him much higher than his proven ability and form. Gibbons may be the forward pocket to midfield rotation as he performed well through the back half in a similar role.

I was looking at the list and identified the bigger, mature bodies;

Docherty Jones Plowman
Newman Weitering Simpson
Newnes Cripps Murphy
Martin CCurnow Lang
Betts Casboult McGovern
Kruezer ECurnow Gibbons
Take your pick on any youngster for the bench.....

Ladies and Gentleman, apart from a few, we are at a spot we can afford our young draftees to build their development in the VFL!!!!:thumbsu:

Better add Walsh. The most mentally mature player out there

I fear our Northern Blues team may actually be worse than this year.

I know every team has development types in their system, but we may just have a few too many to make good.
Our team could comprise of players: Philp, Ramsay, Honey, Phillips, O'Dwyer, BSilvagni and Owies.
Given the relative lack fo progress I have to put Macreadie amongst that group also and then we have Polson who wasn't adding much punch to the midfield and Lang who I just don't trust. Given it's likely to be his last year, my feeling is that the commitment won't quite be there.

That makes for a lot of players we may not be able to rely on winning us games....but I may be wrong.
On the plus side, we do now have a well-credentialled development officer. He'll need all his powers to make it work.

Now that is an excellent point Harks. I agree, but we have more mature bodies that can deliver this year, so the balance will be important. It’s about AFL and not VFL premierships.

It is but as we keep seeing; The two are often aligned.

I used the word 'power' because we now have a serious dedicated development officer, in Luke Power.
I want to see him at every VFL game doing....developing. The coach we have I don't see as a developer of young men.

It was the right time for us to take these risks and it may hurt short term, but it just feels right, given where we are.

BSOS - Goddard - Blakey*
Cottrell - Macreadie - Williamson
Philp - Anderson* - LOB
Pittonet - Dow - S.Fisher*
Kennedy - J.Palmer*? - Lang
Owies - TDK - Finbar

^^should be some solid bodies in amongst those listed above and demanding to dominate VFL football.
Macreadie looked like a big lad in the Jack Martin restaurant photo yesterday.

He is best 22 comfortably IMO.
I’m not sure tbh although I wanna see him in there. Few seem to be leaving him out as well.

I think the main area he needs to focus on is his aerial marking. He has the height but rarely does he take an overhead mark. Maybe he can focus on explosive training so he can leap like his dad use to and get some burst speed.

I'm sure most would agree it's hard to pick a locked best 22. There will be lots of competition for spots on the team, which only drives players more. I'm glad that a lot of our rookies and new draftees are young, up and comers with a potential for the future rather than just a C grade player plugging a hole because we had no-one else better.

My turn. At this point in time best 22 would be:

Docherty Jones Plowman
SPS Weitering Simpson
Newnes Walsh O'brien
Martin Mckay Cuningham
Betts Charlie Mcgoverm
Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
Int: Curnow, Setterfield, Fisher, JSOS

Stiff: Newman, Levi, Williamson, Gibbons, Dow, Marchbank, Stocker, Kennedy

Because we suddenly have plethora creative options in defense, i favour plowman over Newman and Marchbank as i think he's the best defender of the 3 but you could have any of them in the side.

I've got JSOS on the team as a true utility to play whatever position the circumstances of the game dictates.

What are key areas jsos needs to improve on to make best 22?

Improve his goal kicking conversion rate, he gets a lot of chances and if he can increase his accuracy, he becomes super valuable.

I feel his body is still maturing so I hope he can improve his tackling.

Jack has been improving naturally, if he improves again, he will continually be, best 22

I love this 22 - in particular the quality of players left off it. I have long though that we were too tall both up forward and in defence. I cringed at the matchups when teams went with 1 or 2 bigs and 4 or 5 small/mid forwards, and we had Jones, Weiters, Marchbank AND Plowman. I do prefer Marchbank to Plowman if both are available, but Lachie impressed me as the season went on so I’d be happy with either. We obviously need more polish coming out of D50, so SPS/Doc will help with that.
Likewise we were often too tall in the F50 and the ball was cleared from there far too easily. Would switch Harry to FF and a Charlie to CHF, and I think Mitch is better around the 50 than closer to goal, but I am aware that the positions these days are largely irrelevant.
My only other question with your 22 is the back up ruck role. Levi has performed that role brilliantly in 2019 and really see him doing so again. I’d look to sacrifice a runner off the bench to allow that flexibility - especially as the starting 18 has more run than this year’s. As we all know, Charlie and Harry are highly likely to miss multiple games this season, and I predict Levi to play more games than each of them.

Sorry for the rambling reply!
Overall, this 22 fills me with great optimism for 2020.

B: Plowman Jones Simpson
HB: Docherty Weitering Marchbank
C: Walsh Cripps Setterfield
HF: Martin CCurnow Dow
FF: McGovern/Cas Mckay Betts
R: Kreuzer ECurnow Murphy
I/C: Fisher SPS JSOS Gibbons

Cuningham and LOB should be able to force their way in but aren’t locks at the moment. Stocker could be anything and is probably the most exciting player outside the 22. Will reserve judgement on Newnes until I see a bit more but seems a reliable head, much like Newman who is also stiff.

While I’m confident he’ll come good, I just don’t see Dow as a best 22 player with the influx of talent this offseason. IMO he only should only get a game due to another player’s injury or poor form. I want to see him rip apart some VFL games on a week to week basis. He may never be a high accumulator or give us a dozen highlight plays every week, but there have been games in 2019 when I barely noticed he was out there. Not contributing in any way. His well documented woeful disposal just makes it worse. I can deal with players getting 10 disposals a game if they make 80>% of them count. He’s more like 50% or less.
I do think you’re underrating Newnes too. I think he’s a best 22 player no doubt. He fills so many needs for us - he’s the right age bracket, right amount of experience, hard body, elite runner. He’ll absolutely be on a wing round 1.
The overall message from all of our best 22s is that we finally have more players vying for spots than there are spots available. Great place to be.

Agree for such a good kick his goal kicking is poor.
