Cuningham and LOB should be able to force their way in but aren’t locks at the moment. Stocker could be anything and is probably the most exciting player outside the 22. Will reserve judgement on Newnes until I see a bit more but seems a reliable head, much like Newman who is also stiff.

Reckon if DC is fit, he’s in. Pace & evasiveness gets him picked along with pretty handy around goals.
Really excited if we have a full contingent for round 1, forward & backlines are looking the goods as per your team but slight change IMO
HF: Cuningham - McKay - Martin
FF: Betts - Charlie - McGovern
**all capable of kicking 4 goals in a game

If the veterans in the ruck division keep going, the centreline is ready to explode with able backup off the bench.

While I’m confident he’ll come good, I just don’t see Dow as a best 22 player with the influx of talent this offseason. IMO he only should only get a game due to another player’s injury or poor form. I want to see him rip apart some VFL games on a week to week basis. He may never be a high accumulator or give us a dozen highlight plays every week, but there have been games in 2019 when I barely noticed he was out there. Not contributing in any way. His well documented woeful disposal just makes it worse. I can deal with players getting 10 disposals a game if they make 80>% of them count. He’s more like 50% or less.
I do think you’re underrating Newnes too. I think he’s a best 22 player no doubt. He fills so many needs for us - he’s the right age bracket, right amount of experience, hard body, elite runner. He’ll absolutely be on a wing round 1.
The overall message from all of our best 22s is that we finally have more players vying for spots than there are spots available. Great place to be.

Dow is a personal favourite of mine. I think we need to persist with him like we did with SPS who became really important last year. He seems like a guy who thrives on confidence and maybe 6-8 weeks of dominating the VFL will give him that, or alternatively a big round 1 on the G.

I haven’t seen enough Newnes to lock him in yet. He’s in that blurry group of 15-25 IMO.

Fair call on both.
There is definitely a case to keep persevering with Dow in the hope that he consistently plays at an AFL standard. I desperately want him to get there, don’t get me wrong. I just cringe when he is streaming through the middle with the ball. I have more confidence with Levi in front of goal these days than with Dow executing a simple field kick. Dow can outmark a lot of mids, but again his kicking for goal is a real low point. It sounds archaic, but he should be carrying a football EVERYWHERE this offseason and kicking to targets 100-200 times a day. I don’t care what the sports science guys say!

Hmmm. A few on here have him well in the 22. He was a top 10 player at StKilda only 2 or 3 years ago.
I clearly think they are very wrong. lol
He is a mature body and that is about his best asset. Nothing in his skills stands out to me as going to keep more skillful players from going straight past him.

Dow is similar to Weitering in that Bolton saw his potential, threw him in the deep to fast track his development, and ended up destroying his confidence instead. Like Jacob before him, recalibrating in the VFL away from the spotlight will do him a lot of good.

I have Newnes in our Best 22 to start the year. I do think his experience, big body and run are going to important for us. At the risk of being a fence sitter, I do also agree that - if all goes to plan re the development of some others - he may be surpassed as the year goes on. In fact, if he is still in our best 22 at the end of the year I fear that the year may be something of a disappointment. Dow, Stocker, LOB, Williamson and perhaps even Cottrell all play in a similar wing/HBF role and have a chance to really cement a senior spot. Until then I see Newnes getting some meaningful AFL time.

I simply see him as there for if some kids do not come on straight away like Dow or O'Brien or a number of injuries happen to someone like Ed Ciurnow or Simpson and an extra mature body is required. I expect him to be an emergency almost every week and play maybe around 10 games at most.

Weitering was fine until Bolton moved him forward. Should never have happened.

Nearly won the RS in 2016 at FB.

It will be interesting to see who is right. Honestly, I hope you are, as that will mean some of our young players have improved and locked in a senior spot.

If fit, Cunners is best 10.
If fit, JSOS is best 22 for flexibility alone.
If fit, Newman is pushing Old man Simmo out based on form, training, fitness.
(If fit, my beer drinking should take priority over your silly opinion of my beer drinking opinion.)

Newnes plays round 1, so does Martin on the wings.

Marchy won’t be available round 1, I think Willo, if he’s fit, will look at that spot, he’s not the intercept Marchy is, but his mongrel and run covers what Jones and Weitbot can do to cover him in the air.

The mids are less clear at the bottom end.
Kreuzer, Cripps, Curnow, Murphy, Setterfield, Walsh are A-grade+ ....everybody else is B-grade or below.

The forwardline is going to be a work in progress and opposition defined.
Question marks over Charlie and possibly Harry, forces Levi to take a place in the team every week, until those injuries in the forward and backhalf are resolved.
Some of his ruck work was comparable to the fellas that are starters in the position, but it was his trimming down(Russell) this year that allowed our Cas to have the most impact.
He was covering the ground better than I’ve ever seen him do before and almost as good as any big man in the comp.
His defensive efforts alone this year probably jagged us at least 2 of our wins, see the Adelaide game and Murphys response to that late pack grab, ******* elite.(no wonder Alistair Clarkson was drooling at the prospect)
I don’t know what our starting lineup will look like come round 1., but spots on the 22 are more difficult to secure than they’ve been for more than since our club told the AFL to “go and get ****ed”.
SOS, you magnificent bastard!!👍

Dow will probably end up with his brother

A few things stand out at training:

1. Cuningham is sublimely skilled, smooth and more powerful than most of his peers. A class above.

2. Williamson comes across similarly.

Your post actually wants me to go now to a pornography store and bump into the late Adam West along the way :)

Obviously Dow requires some work to be considered a lock in our side going forward but so too do the majority of our young players.
Coming in it was obvious that he'd need to build his body & anaerobic ability quite significantly to suit his style of play, this takes time but if he can piece it all together I see him being a damn fine footballer for our club.
I think with improved depth we'll see the likes of Dow, Fish & LOB rotated in and out of the side to ensure that they get sufficient midfield minutes & touches to shorten their respective learning curves.
