Pickett fit and reaching his potential makes a big difference

Players I hope we get/chase are Ed Langdon, Menegola, Papley, Martin or Ainsworth. Atley or Drew from Port. Gallucci at Crows. Ned McHenry would be perfect if we could get him. Lewis Taylor may be able to be got cheap

Jeremy Goddard from Claremont I would look as a Ruck. I am also a fan of Sam Fisher & Mason Blakey

Still get a few draftees but IMO it's time to add some ready to go players

judd had billings nudging the brownlow if he maintains his form - couldn't seeing him leaving if that ever happened........
Was that a strategic comment though?

Nice to know Juddy and Carlton believe in you etc. got to feel pretty good having the great man talk you up on national tv. Does it just add those little 1 % to where you might like to go?

I don’t know, just a thought I had when hearing Judd say this last night.

Personally I’m still not sold on him anyway, unless someone could show he was injured or going through one hell of a personal battle last year. Talented, but commitment, courage and competitiveness were non existent. I hate that sign in any player. It’s the Gibbs gene.

This I can get around. Bolton would be nice.

If we're targeting Richmond, Butler and Bolton should be the ones.
Yep, I’d be pushing for Bolton too. Cheap maybe as well. Got that Eddie potential though.. would still sell the house for Rioli ( I know it can’t happen), but he is something special.

Best 22, 23 and under as at 1 January 2019

For funsies:

FB: Marchbank, Weitering, Schumacher
HB: Williamson, Macreadie, LOB

C: Dow, Kennedy, Setterfield
RR: TDK, Cripps, Walsh

HF: SPS, C.Curnow, Fisher
FF: Kerr, McKay, Cuningham

Stocker, Lang, JSOS, Pickett

Of our starting 18, Schumacher, Macreadie and Kerr are unproven or haven't had much exposure at senior level. Obviously the 4 on our interchange are in the same boat.

This means though, 15 out of our potential premiership 22 is already here, getting game time together, and not yet in our prime.

Now obviously this will change and some players will drop off, but then you have to remember we also have 6 "older" players who will still likely be hanging around:
Dochherty, McGovern, Jones, Newman, Plowman and E.Curnow. We are looking damn good.

Everyone sees thing differently of course, but would be thrilled to acquire one or more of the bolded.

Northern Blues players:
Anderson has impressed me most in his first couple of games. Like his strength and aggression.
Fisher is ok, but where would we use him? (can say the same about Anderson, i guess) Nevertheless would make for an OK rookie spot.
Blakey. I like him too, but his kicking isn't great and a little too fumbly under pressure upon my viewing.

Same thing should apply every year; Needs takes precedence.
Needs by way of an immediate improvement to the starting squad and or a replacement for a player going out.

3-4 players that make us immediately better and then takes some chances later in the draft and rookie draft. Think that may be the go.

Soapy, paint your pictures 'bout how it's gonna be,
By now I should know better, you dream optimistically.
But tell me all about #17 for CFC.
Soapy, you can always sell any dream to me.
Oh, Soapy, you can always sell any dream to me.

Let's look at this analytically.

Excluding mids and small forwards, our best 22 for 2020 is as follows:

Best 22

Backline
Williamson Jones Marchbank
Docherty Weitering Newman

Midfield
Kreuzer 1.XX 2.XX
3.XX 4.XX 5.XX

Forwardline
6.XX Charlie 7.XX
McGovern McKay 8.XX

Interchange
Plowman 9.XX 10.XX 11.XX

Needs
So that's 11 players we need to fill, made up of either midfielders or small forwards. At a minimum, we want one elite small forward (Betts type). We'd also like to have 2 midfielders in there with forward craft or with size.

So we need 8-10 mids...and 1-3 small forwards.

Depth Chart Mids (8-10), the best 8 are italicised
Cripps
SPS*
Walsh
Dow
Fisher*
Ed Curnow
Setterfield*
Murphy (good but old)

Lochie O Brien
Thomas (good but old)
Kennedy*
Stocker
Lang
Pickett*

Depth Chart Small Forwards (1-3) the best 2 are italicised
Cuningham*
Fasolo

Polson
Garlett*

Analysis
So, without any additions, our midfield rotations are already strong. That top 8 reads so well and makes me and others hard.

Cripps, SPS, Walsh, Dow, Fisher, Ed, Setterfield, Murphy. Then we have 2 more players to choose from as either surplus mids or playing in VFL. There are still good names here like LOB, Kennedy and Stocker.

If we were to bring in someone like Coniglio, someone in that top 8 drops out, probably Murphy. Now Cogs is obviously a step up on Murphy at this stage in their careers, but it is still not required given we will then have Murphy plus 3 talented kids: LOB, Kennedy and Stocker languishing for lack of opportunity.

On the other hand, for our small forward stocks, we are all crying out for Cuningham, despite him only showing small signs of being capable. Then we are scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys like Fasolo, Polson and Garlett.

(*Asterisks = Could play as a mid+forward part time) Now, we could play guys like Fisher and SPS as a part time forward (they both have craft and can apply pressure). Similarly, could also see Setterfield or Kennedy using their size to be played in the forwardline too.

But this doesn't remove the fact that we still need someone who can legitimately crumb and do pure-small forward type things to accompany Cuningham (or replace him).

Conclusion: Don't use our assets on Coniglio. Target a good-->elite small forward with the assets we have. Remember, we only have 1 first round pick! (and that pick isn't even ours!)
I’m thinking if Adelaide just miss the finals Caleb Serong could be a good fit around that point. If they bomb out completely and we end up with pick 5/6, someone like Sam Flanders could be on the cards.

Alternatively if Adelaide do bomb the year, I’d also be happy to grab a running half back to replace Simpson (or supersede Newman) in which case Lachlan Ash would be very handy.

A few likely names there, but does anybody know what the contract status is with Toby Green. I know he's got a history of being injury prone, but if he's available would be a perfect fit for small forward. I'm sure getting Green right would be a magnificent challenge for Russell.

Polson's played 16 games and I don't like the idea of bringing in players because they are cheap or may be an improvement. We need to go for real quality now.

We also have Fasolo LeBois Polson Cuningham Murphy Gibbons Garlett Thomas Pickett Lang on our list who can all play that role. Going to be some interesting decisions at years end

If Cuningham Fasolo & Pickett were up and running, Polson had 50 games, Kennedy Stocker & Setterfield pushed Murphy forward, Williamson & Docherty fit forced Thomas forward etc we may not be having this discussion?

If we recruited a Coniglio does that push Fisher forward more?

IMO I don't think it's as bad as most make out. Get the midfield working better and connecting with the forward line and get some of these players fit and playing well and it may well not be an issue at all.
Good call Soap.

For me we need to top end talent mids at the end of this year. We see with Geelong the benefits of Danger, selwood, Ablett not playing full time minutes in the middle towards the end of games, i like that model.

We definitely need mids who know where the goals are. Thats why id really hope we chase Billings hard.

We seriously have most of the pieces built. Just a few improvements and games into the kids and next year we will be flying

I hope the club invests a lot of effort into getting Pickett right, imo, in 12 months time he could have a game just like what Harry had, and have all the media talking about him breaking a game open. And the best part, it won’t cost us anything!
I'm a big fan on Pickett he possess traits that certainly could break a game open with speed and Xfactor provided his injury doesn't give him any ongoing trouble, I'm very confident Russell can build him up for the back half of the season, if he can get his s**t together he can tear it up down forward with Harry Charlie Mitch Cunners🤤

Same....except I want 2 :)

I don't think there's another way to go about it, but the season hasn't played out just yet either.
Things can change, but given what we know, given what we've seen and given what looks to a a clear need, how can we ignore it?

Gibbons: Think we now know where he plays his best football now.
Polson: Harsh on him being asked to do what he doing right now and the coach can be nice to all players after a win, but if Polson somehow manages to become a manic goal-kicker, I'll be more than just a little surprised.
ECurnow: He's not the answer either. We all know that and even if he makes good this year that's great. What about the future though?
And then what Murphy? Thomas? JSilvagni? I think they're either plug-ups and/or not the answer.

Cuningham had been faring well in the forward line before injury and looked dangerous around goals also, but even here we can't be sure of what we have going forward. I still see him playing wing eventually.

Anyway we have gaps. How will we fill them and with who?
Yeah you put 2 classy small/medium forwards into our forward line and that just gives it a whole different dimension altogether...

Ash looks like going pretty early super skilled medium running defender who takes the game on, classy player...

Didn't care for a ruckman this year until I watched Max Lynch yesterday.
Only a rookie on the Collingwood list, but showed a lot in many different facets of the game. SOS couldn't have missed him. No one could have.

It wasn't so much as him having a good game alone, but he did everything you'd want of a modern-day ruckman.

Lynch is in line to benefit from the AFLs changes to free agency that kicks in at the end of this season. Max Lynch at the end of this season becomes a delisted free agent, along with any player who has ever been delisted and re-signed.

Some notable names mentioned in the article explaining the changes are former Blue Mitch Robinson and Geelong player Sam Menegola.

Just hope it doesn’t go to Jamie Elliott like someone suggested somewhere in this abyss.

Be happy to spend coin on Jack Martin though. Lewis Taylor also.
If Taylor keeps getting overlooked then he won't cost much at all, i rate him and i wonder if his omission is down to behaviour/standards rather than talent.
