Take it easy Sheep, second year player, they won’t all be Sam Walsh’s straight up. We are all on the same team here
Darcy is a 4th year player.

Oliver was taken before him. Mills and Hopper were taken with those Academy shenanigans.

I don't think Darcy was a bad pick necessarily if they were 100% set on a mid. There were still a lot of quality talls available (see: Charlie Curnow and McKay), but I don't think they missed out on any other gun mids.

Kennedy was also that draft (of the Matthew variety) and I don't think he's been any better. Just an underwhelming draft for mids other than Oliver, Mills and Hopper (none of which were available to Essendon).

EDIT: just did some quick research, the only other true "mid" they missed out on was Tom Phillips, who is killing it at Collingwood. He was a pick in the 50s so wasn't really on anyone's radar.

GWS have just re-signed Hopper and Himmelberg, have Kelly, Cogs and Tomlinson out of contract this year.

Whitfield and Williams are both Free agents next year, I can easily see Whitfield being the big priority and Williams being left with a deal that doesn’t reflect his worth.

Zac Jones also out of contract
Yeah there's some dollars there! Ideally Whitfield we take as a FA next year but if GWS get wind he wants out this year, they will cash in come trade week 2019.

Its definitely time we went the FA avenue this year and next imo

I was refering to Dow being a second year player...

If our pick was high enough in this years draft, would you rather:

a. draft Dylan Williams
b. trade it for Jack Martin

Would love to know what people's thoughts are.
Don't know enough about A and no to B (good player but too old for our list demographic and he does strike me as a conditional footballer)

100% this will be the strategy. Adelaide pick very unlikely to be used to draft a kid, we are already overstocked.

But we need some decent wins this year to make ourselves attractive enough.
Still dont agree re wins. Players aren't dumb. If they see the potential and see we have players such as Cripps, Walsh, McKay, SPS, Weitering, Charlie, Doc and so on, they will know its only a short matter of time.

Yes we want wins, but McGovern and Setterfield were keen to join us and id say another year will only heighten what players think of us going forward.

If you were a player and you saw our list, knowing Jack Martin and Billings were joining us, i feel a lot of players would be jumping at the chance to join us no matter how many wins we get in 2019

I must be the only person here who rates Parish

He's an outside mid with good running capacity. Essendon aren't doing him any favours because he's playing inside the contest more often than not.

A pick around 30 would get the job done. He's out of contract.

Also, he's not as slow as what some say he is. He's not quick off the mark but his top speed is alright.
We must be watching a different Parish.

If he’s going to make it at AFL level it’ll be as an inside mid.

Just doesn’t have the weapons to excel on the outside.

For a pick 30 you’d probably have to consider it but I’d steer well clear.

I’m not sure he’s making it.

Just noticed alot of posts regarding Martin from GC , I dont really see him as a small foward and probably watched him in about 15 odd games and for the life of me i just dont see an elite player in the making, Now that may be because of the gold coast team but would you really pay $700-$800k plus a top 10 pik to get him ? Is he worth that type of pick considering the money he would demand and the output he has displayed in his career.

Think he could be ok as a hbf but other than that see no use for him

Parish reminds me a lot of Paddy Dow. Can get a ton of it, just butchers it a bit. I’d definitely take Darcy on, you can never have enough top end talent.

Jack Martin would be a nice get too, but he still doesn’t fit that small forward dynamic. He’s a SPS type - plays better in the wide open spaces. Not that this is a bad thing.

I think Fisher could be an elite small forward if given the role, but are you robbing Peter to pay Paul. The dynamic of an indigenous lad like Garlett or Betts stalking the forward line is what we yearn for. I think Pickett is ideal but I fear he will be injury riddled for his career. Rather than trying to make Garlett into Chris Yarran, put him forward and release him, he could be a good option. I’d also still consider a Jake Neade in the mid-season draft for a trial. His forward pressure was very strong. Didn’t kick a heap of goals, but kept the ball in. Low cost for possible gain.
I agree I think Garlett best position is FP/HF, where he can use his speed and skills to hurt the opposition. I don’t think he’s ever gonna make it as a HB

He's a solid player for our best 23-30. Can fill a number of the small roles, just that he's not overly quick imo. I've not seen his numbers but watching him he's slower than Cuningham and Pickett who always get thrown up for similar roles.

Jack Martin has a bit of Harley Bennell written all over him, a supremely talented footballer who simply refuses to work hard enough. Steer clear IMO.

Agree mate. Still mainly hype at this point. Should be consistently playing high level by now.

Only if cheap for me ( in picks and $)

Dream off season:
Free agent - Coniglio
Pick 5-10 - Serong/Flanders (forwards) or Ash (running defender)
Package two third round picks into a pick in the 20s - Malcolm Rosas Jr (small forward) or Trent Bianco (general defender)
4th rounder - Some rough diamond (or can this be used to upgrade Gibbons?)
DFA - Max Lynch (Collingwood rookie ruckman)

I don't think too many list changes are necessary this off season. If we achieved some sort of scenario like this along with the return of Docherty and Pickett, another pre-season with Russell for the likes of Stocker, McKay, McGovern, Dow, O'Brien, Setterfield, Williamson, Macreadie, TDK and Lang... I'd be confident to plonk some cash on our return to the finals.

Very difficult to pick which five players would be moved on at the end of the season.

Oh, and if North have a terrible year and wield the axe, lets just wait and see what happens to Jy Simpkin. He's handy across half forward :)
If North have a shit year, I don't see why we should be holding our breath waiting to pick up one of their discards. For mine that's too close to the year we picked up Mullet.

Star GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio is set to engage in important contract discussions with the club over the next month, according to the Herald Sun.
Carlton, Hawthorn and St Kilda are reportedly chasing the 25-year-old hardest, hoping he will turn down a long-term deal with the Giants and come to Victoria.

Hawthorn, Carlton and St Kilda can all offer mammoth deals for the star, should he choose to leave GWS.
