Lang had 6 touches last weekend, I think about 10 the week before that and after playing only a handy game against the worst side in the comp I wouldn’t be saying he is in good form. My money would well and truly be on him not being on the list next season. He does have 5 weeks to save his career and I wish him every bit of luck in doing so.

Anyone seen much of Dan Houston or Bryne Jones? bit of talk of a port rebuild after another season of falling away, either would be a handy small lock down defender? I know houston is from Vic, what do you think his value would be? having a handy season from the looks of it and we do need another reliable lockdown small defender that gives us a bit of run and grit. Would be very pleased with an off season of Cogs Paps and Houston if it was possible
I rate both highly, particularly Houston, but both are very happy at Port Adelaide and won’t be coming home soon.

Sometimes analyzing disposal numbers does not give you an understanding of what a player is capable of in the future. I thought he moved with more freedom and his work off the ball was solid

It seems he is finally over his injuries and I believe he will build in the coming weeks, still quite young, I think he will be given another year

Very true but regardless of injury history I just can’t get a lot excitement out of a 6th year players handy game against Gold Coast when he has been really disappointing all season. Sure if he can maintain and build on that for the rest of the season then that is fantastic but after seeing Eddie kick 6 against them one week and than look completely cooked the next I don’t have a lot of confidence.

I think at the very least he's a better option than Polson. Worse tackler but cleaner finisher and goal sense.

Cedric Cox is worth a look. Can’t get a game at Brisbane and may come cheap.
Very quick and elite user.

Halls Creek native, I'm sure we could find a place for him.

Contracted for one more year, though. May need a change of scenery.

On further thought, don't mind this at all. Some speed and skill coming out of defence perhaps?

Perhaps go back to some of his games at Geelong, he is more than capable and reaching those levels is not an impossibility. Players like Lang are finishers and will improve as the side does, by gaining more chances at converting

As you mentioned, they have different attributes.

On Polson, I wouldn't be writing him off just yet. I believe he will improve, just depends how much

I love the optimism and I think he'll improve too, just one too many holes in his game.

He can't find the ball. And when he finds it, he's not very good at using it.

Lang really hasn't shown enough to suggest he's worth keeping.

Went to the VFL yesterday, Finbar is a mile off. Hope he can develop into something.

On Lang - agree 100%. Question that needs to be asked is whether he gets a run ahead of some others. Cunners is probably direct competition for that spot when fit, Fisher might be needing spend some more time in the forward 50, assume we bring in a proper small forward as well and it's starting to get a bit tight. Don't think we need to delist him though, no reason he couldn't stick around for another 2-3 years playing 8-12 games a year as form/injury dictate.

On Polson - club needs to decide what position he plays and just let him play there. Might be one of those guys that comes into the senior side at 24yo, in round 22 of a premiership year, and just slots in seamlessly on his way to a medallion.

Warning: quite long and unpopular post following.

One of the things I find interesting is that most seem to regard this thread as a platform to discuss who we think should be targetted and who we think will be de-listed.

We have been ultra competitive in the 6 games under Teague and, I think, fair to say at least competitive in 6 of the 11 we played under Bolton. This, to me, indicates that even our best available weekly 22 will prove to be mostly competitive against all rivals and will give us all some happy days.

If the players missing through injury and considered here to be best 22 ( Charlie, Docherty, Marchbank, McGovern, Cuningham, Williamson and Dow) were fit and available, selection would be a difficult process. That really gives us 29 players all vying for a best 22 appearance and doesn't include others who have the potential to develop to that level.

By no means does that mean that we have "arrived", just a long way better than we were 12 months ago. This DFA and Trade period is crucial, this is where we need to start to tweak that list and improve it.

Many have named who they think will go this year and I haven't seen anything that I violently disagree with on those lists but the point I'd make is that few, if any, of those players would result in anything coming back our way. Most would be DFA's

If we're in with a chance at a Papley, Martin, Hill or any player who would improve our current list why do we think that we have to use combinations of our next 2 first round picks?

Why would we not consider offering one of our current better players as part of a trade?

As an example (and won't be popular) but if we can get Papley with a trade (and trade backs) of, let's say, a Dow, Cuningham or Williamson and hold that pick of 9 or 10 why does this not become a win/win?

I know many will say that it will come back and bite us if they turn out to be guns but this didn't stop Brisbane from trading a number 2 pick and that hasn't hurt them and will probably be seen by the Bulldogs as a positive trade as well.

The overall strengthening of the team is far more important to me than retaining players just because we happen to like some things they have done.

In short I would rather trade out one of those players to get Papley, throw the brown paper bag at Coniglio, try for another decent FA and keep that first round pick. Would rather stay in at the low end of the draft if possible.

Currently, very true

I think he stays on the list another year (easy for me to say given he is contracted) and needs to play back where he showed his value as a late pick, in the midfield at VFL. That will give us a better indication of what his ceiling could be

I think it's too hard to judge who will stay and who will go at the moment. I think a number of players will be in limbo until after the trade period.

Yeah, the players we can get in will determine how many move on.

Le Bois gone for sure.
I think Lobbe and Simmo retire.

If we can find another ruck, then Phillips goes, but if we can't, we have to keep him.

Not looking great for Kerr, Garlett, Fasolo.
And I don't think Lang and Schumacher would be feeling totally safe.

I think his best value to the team would be as a long-term replacement for E.Curnow. I know Ed can find the ball easily and reads the play well, but we could do with a long-term tagger.

Possibly as a tagger, yet given his stature, he would be exploited if dragged forward by his immediate opponent

Think he needs to build confidence and touch through the middle at VFL level

Ooooh - good spot.

Cheap option for that injection of pace we probably need. Starts making team selection a bit tricky, trying to balance the niche role players against some of the versatile utilities.

He’s probably behind Mathieson and Taylor who also can’t get a game and fits our needs more than those two.
Also means we’d have a Cedric, a Paddy, a Harry and a Charlie on our list. Just need to find a Percy!

If I was a betting man I'd put good money on him still being on the list next year. People need to realise he's playing as a small forward so 10-15 possessions is actually the norm. Listen to the coach giving him a wrap after Saturday's game if you don't think he's been contributing.
