I'm hoping we win 10 games and throw two first round picks at Josh Kelly and push hard at Coniglio who is a RFA. Would not be surprised if we chase Taranto as well.

I'm betting Adelaide wanted that trade done with us because they will chase some of the SA boys next season. Still can't believe we ended up with Walsh and another player we rated in the top 8 of that draft.

Would love to add another young but prime age powerhouse mid to that group.

I think we might be on the lookout for flankers and wingers, maybe a specialist forward pocket. It's real hard to tell. Depends on who steps up and who doesn't. I think we will be looking for elite runners who obviously can also play.

Yeah. At some point we have to swing the other way and drop below the average. Wanted it to be this year, but a few unplanned exits put paid to that.

Expecting Simpson to hang up the boots, but not guaranteed.
Murphy and Kreuzer should go round again, barring catastrophic injury.
Curnow has a few really good years left.
Thomas looks to be hitting his straps again, and I'd expect him to get an extension.

Beyond that lot, the only players who should be leaving are the ones we decide to part ways with.

On a clock: Phillips, Casboult
Go hard or go home: Cuningham, Pickett, Garlett, Lebois, Lang, Fasolo, Goddard, Bugg

Those first two will, I think, make way next year.
The other seven have either had their chances with us and need to deliver, or have been offered a lifeline and need to return the faith.

If I had to guess, I think the 2019 outgoing list will be:
Simpson (ret), Casboult (del), Phillips (del), Pickett (del), Lebois (del), Lang (del)

I've got a feeling Cunners will do enough this year to be given a short extension.
Fasolo looks motivated, and is real quality. May come down to fitness though.
Get a good vibe from Bugg, and think he'll be a solid contributor for a few years.
We'll probably persist with Goddard, given he's depth only anyway (in an area we don't have much depth) and has upside.
Pickett vs. Garlett - reckon we'll only keep one. Garlett just ahead based on workrate, but Pickett has him for talent and could swing this if he gets his shit together.

6 changes, plus any unexpected shenanigans.

Agree with your list adjustments and Thomas to retire, IMHO, Garlett is on very thin ice, if he has another nonchalant season he’s out Russell will not suffer any fools it’s his regime or the highway. So we may be looking at 8 changes.

If we could snare Coniglio next year wilth a massive bid it would suffice, our midfiled restructuring would be complete and become a powerful engine room by 2020 onwards.

Marchbank is 1cm shorter than Alex Rance and 3cm taller than Jeremy McGovern. If those 2 can matchup on key forwards so can Marchbank.
Those two don’t match up on key forwards at all. They play loose and intercept. In fact Rance often only matches up on the medium forward if he’s forced. If you manage to get either of those two playing man on man you’ve got a win. Marchbank is potentially the same type and would struggle one on one with the bigger forwards.

As much as it’d be great to land Kelly or Coniglio I think a Taranto in that Dusty/De Goey role is what we need more. Look at the number of young midfielders we’ve got who by the age of 23-25 could be at that elite level.

Dow, Fisher, Walsh, Setterfield, Kennedy, SPS and Stocker have either gone top 20 in the draft or in Fisher’s case shown enough to feel like enough of them will be top talent. Only need 2 of that 7 to be in that AA level to compliment Cripps for our midfield to be a weapon! Won’t be overnight but these kids are going to hit that 23 year / 60-70 game mark and some will absolutely explode while others will be solid contributors.

McGovern quite often is on one of the KPF but he reads the game that well he goes off his man to get involved. Rance one on one can be exposed but it’s about the group of tall backs knowing there’ll be third man coming into support. Marchbank one on one isolated sure that won’t work. But one on one with Plowman one JW helping out he’d be fine

One on one isolated will be rare for our defenders if we can get our stuff together. Players have to be able to fit into a team defense structure and vaguely play on their opposition players. Your back 6 needs to be comprised of players who are tallish, quick, brave enough to block holes and able to force contested packs. But you still need to right mix of tall and medium players and still need a few who are going to pay more attention to their opponents.

I think Weitering will be playing deep on the bigger forwards as Rowe has done. Marchbank will play high on the more athletic players, CHB. They will need to be organised and know when to zone and when to go man on man. Jones will likely play on the more athletic talls. I'm thinking forward lines might be a little taller than usual and go back to a three tall system.

Got a bit of figuring out to do. Hopefully we can really excel with defending as a team which starts from upfield.

The possibilities that get me a little excited are Murph and Daisy. I believe with the return of our defenders that they will both be played forward of centre given this is one dearth area we currently have.
Maybe not the fastest or most pressurised but at the feet of H, Charlie and Gov they could be very dangerous with their smarts guile and genuine skill. ( and obviously they are more than well enough equipped to pinch hit in the guts.)
Loving the introduction of all these magnificent kids but these two intrigue me and will fill a role while we wait to see who or what flushes out in the small forward dept.

Bugg didn’t get much of an introduction. Bit disappointing for him, seems a lack of effort or no one could be bothered doing any research. Not exactly a warm welcome.
thought the same - is he still wearing the albatross?

I suspect that 2019 will the last year for Kruz and Daisy.

I think Simpson still has 2 years left in the tank, if not more. I just don't see any degradation in his game. Barring injury, which he usually is clean in, he still has plenty to give the Carlton Football club beyond next year.

I would love Murph to hang around, if possible. Do a Shane Crawford and see some success with this new list.
This is not your best work, which is saying something

For list management next year we need to start looking around for a Ruck. Kruezer turns 30 next year, and I have concerns for the big fella's health going forward. We need to trade in a quality Ruck from somewhere over the next two years as a replacement.

I'm keen next year to throw the farm at Kelly, Cognilio and Tomlinson from GWS (the latter two are Free agents next year) and see if we cant shake one loose.

Screw the draft next year. We can take 3 mature aged players with the required 3 Picks you have to take for all I care (including a VFL Ruck as backup). Next year I want us going all in with trades and F/A, with all picks (including all future selections) on the table.
When's Grundy ooc?

Probably 3 of them will be around the 100 game mark by the time they are 23.

To add to the talk on the newly drafted midfielders
We know what we get with Walsh. A classy non stop ball winner and all the perks. No 1 for a reason.
But I am so excited about Stocker. The lad is good and has the composure. A bit of argey bargey too if you don't mind.
Not arrogant but confident, and ethical about football and life, same as Walsh. Two beauties.

FWIW I've been giving this a bit of thought.

I specifically refer to Bolts comments to Stocker immediately after he was selected.

Along the lines of "you're a competitor- and that's what we love about you".

Are Bolts and SOS concerned they have a few too many guys that aren't "competitors"? I.e. Pickett, Garlett, SPS, BSOS, Levi, etc and want more mongrel in the team.

It seemed an unusual comment to make to a new high pick recruit.

FWIW - GWS Recruiting manager Adrian Caruso was on RSN this morning.

After having GWS selectuions dissected he was asked "who killed it in the draft"?

Carlton was one of the 2 teams he rated.

He said words to the effect "they've copped a bit of flack for it but Walsh is a safe bet and Stocker will be good. Clearly they're backing themselves to move up the ladder. I liked it."

I somehow keep thinking that we might have really erred by missing out on Mitchell or in not pursuing Ratten.

The midfield is probably our most prized posession right now and I fear that not having a specialist/proven midfield coach, might set us back a little.

Once you do have most of the relative information at hand, it's somewhat clear that the trade was a good one in principle.
It made for perfect sense and maybe even a touch of luck that Adelaide went along with it.

It's OK though for some to just jump on and tell us that we'll end up last and that Adelaide will be premiers.
Guess we have a whole 10 months of speculation now, of what could have been and should have been. Oh well.

I think so too. Unfortunately they don't grow on trees. I reckon Lloyd will be onto this and will have someone new through the door come seasons end.

We also can’t afford to miss out on signing or trading for an A grade FA in 2019.

If we signed Coniglio as a FA, who else is out there that we could potentially offer up the Crows pick/2020 first round for?

I'm calling it again. 5-7 changes next year. Our smallest by a long way since SOS arrived. Not going to even think about who goes out.

Like to see us go to draft with 3 picks and get a couple of ready made guns like a Kelly Coniglio even Cerra. We may need another KF or KD depending upon form or development

This is a big step up for you from 5 days ago, where your brain was breaking over this trade. :p
