Interesting JLT

Standouts:
Weitering (BOG for mine), SPS, Cuners, Walsh and Jones

Surprisedly Good: (For various reasons)
Thomas, Garlett, Setters, McKay, Newman ( off a little today)

Rusty:
Fish, Murphy, Plow, Ed ( please no more as a forward)

Building:
Dow

Ready to explode
McGovern
What he said :thumbsu:
Gibbo still coming up to tempo with the pace of AFL....still think he'll be good for us this year. Even at VFL, he'll be invaluable with our kids at that level.

Some opinion/hopes for this year

I think Kerr Macreadie Williamson LOB Stocker TDK will be in the side by second half of the year and make a real difference to side and give a different (improved) look to the list
Gibbons to play more on ball
Schumacher to debut at some stage
Goddard to play at least 8 games
Younger players will get breaks under Russell. More about quality than purely quantity. Around 15 games for Dow LOB Walsh Setterfield is perfect
Will add Sam Fisher at some stage. Too good to pass up. Other option is Mason Blakey
BSOS to show a lot at VFL level

then:

I think we need to add 1 or 2 quality readymade mids to our list. Need the mature body help
Need to target a Ruckman

If all those guys play because of form and not injuries it would be huge but I have my doubts as I think it's a bit premature. Kerr is probably more backup, Macreadie probably needed a strong preseason and needs more maturity, Williamson needed a strong preseason but I can see him being there soon enough if he's lucky, LOB might be in and out a bit, needs to develop his game quite a bit. TDK will be real good but just needs a bit more age to push Kreuzer and Phillips out. Gibbons on ball time is probably going to happen. Schumacher I hope debuts at some stage. Goddard will need injuries or a real drop of form to get in. I think Sam Fisher is probably one of a few we are looking at and won't be added until the season is well in. From what I've seen of Ben he's got a long way to go, nothing to see in regards to AFL this year. The VFL should for once be a really good developing team. Hopefully it's strong.

Greater Western Sydney have placed the ball firmly in the court of gun duo Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio as they prepare for the inevitable onslaught of offers from rival clubs in the coming months.

Both players, pivotal in the club’s quest for a historic first premiership and named as vice-captains for this season, have been given the option of signing long- or short-term deals, with the Giants more confident than ever before that the pair will remain at the club.

Forget the name Stocker and just look at the types we have.
Seems to me we have a surplus of those that are predominantly key inside mids.

If for instance Stocker proved to be slightly better than Kennedy, pushing Kennedy back to play reserves and simply be a 'back-up' player, have we really achieved a lot. This has nothing to do with Adelaide and given our rating of Stocker, we did the right thing, but still....

Every club brings in youth via drafts, but targeted mid recruits aren't brought in just to be back-ups.
Flip the question around and let's ask, was Kennedy a mistake? Not you, because the answer is already obvious (settle down :)) but does our midfield need Stocker and Kennedy? I just don't 'feel' it, nor see it.........yet.

Think these days you need to have a depth in every line if possible, we know they can’t all play at once, but injury and form can make a mockery of things on paper, IMO we need a good group of around 10-12 players capable of running through the midfield and then try different combinations till we find out what works best for us, having healthy competition for spots is also critical to building a good list.

Stocker and Kennedy are both big bodied inside mids, but they do bring other things to the table, Kennedy’s game seems to be based on really crackin in and doing the hard stuff, he struggled last year due to injury, but he still impressed me with the way he threw his body around to put a smother on or put a block on for team mate, couldn’t fault the effort, could be a good role player.
Stocker has that electric speed out of the stoppage and dual sided disposal, very similar to Shiel, maybe SOS felt that was a type we needed to add.
Hell I’d take Stocker just based on how he carries himself in interviews, he sounds so confident and driven, but isn’t arrogant or figjam, will give himself every chance

I sort of look at it this way:

Big bodied, inside, heavy lifting: Cripps, Kennedy
Tall inside mid/fwd: Setterfield, Silvagni
Solid build, inside burst: Dow, Stocker
Tagger/def mid: Curnow, Cottrell*
Inside/Outside: Petrevski-Seton, Lang
Balanced (wing/more outside role/HFF): Murphy, Fisher, Cuningham
Wing: Walsh**, O'Brien, Pickett***
Mid/small pressure fwd: Gibbons, Polson

*Thinking maybe Cottrell could become the specialist tagging successor to Ed? Although will be harder to get a run in our midfield by the time Cottrell is ready, perhaps we won't have a designated tagger and will just have our first choice mids apply defensive pressure.

**Walsh to move more inside in time as he puts some size on, for now he's a winger for mine.

***Probably more hope than anything based in logic...

That's 18 players and aside from Ed and Murph they're all under 24. There's also a pretty good spread of player types, although I wouldn't mind another runner or nimble mid/fwd type in there, particularly if Pickett doesn't sort his **** out. Will be interesting to see how hard we go at the Billings, Martin, etc types post season.

Quite a few are going to have to miss out on game day, obviously, but we might have the ability to tailor our composition based on the opposition. If it's going to be particularly combative, at the coalface stuff, then maybe we play all/most of Cripps, Kennedy, Setterfield, Silvagni, Dow, Stocker. Similarly if we want some more run/spread then we want to make sure that we've got more of the Walsh, O'Brien, SPS, Fisher, Cuningham types.... fingers crossed Pickett can recover, get fit, stay on the list for next year, then become that top-end speed, line-breaking winger we'd love to see him become.

It is a pretty good mix of midfielders, with a good range of different types, I’m also holding out hope of Pickett still making it, he does have that rare blend of elite pace and good skills, would love to see Pickett and Walsh as our wingmen one day.
Another interesting fact, our midfield is almost completely built with 1st round talent, with Fisher pick 25 and Ed the only ones not selected at the top end of the draft, not many teams have a stable of talent like that and it isn’t only our midfield that has this kind of elite talent.

Hey Soap, love the enthusiasm and keen to hear who you believe comes out of the team for all these guys to get the games you mentioned?

Hi Yubby

Don’t really know and that’s what’s great. I also don’t care who it is. I’m just happy I can see more than 30 players on our list that could be genuine best 22. We have the talent now it’s just development and injury. The last couple of VFL games have really impressed me. Will be better next year when we add another 5-6 quality readymade players.

Depth and competition for spots is absolutely vital IMO. First time in 20 years I could say that about us.

Doesn’t really answer your question but best I can do

Cheers

Thanks Soap. I guess it will come down to fitness and injuries as well as who can develop the quickest. There's more than enough talent to fill the 22 spots so it will be somewhat of a race i think. The kids that are willing to work hard, show their hunger to learn and improve are likely the ones to get the first opportunities but there will certainly be others nipping at their heels.

When i fast forward to +2 years time or our premiership team, i still think we're 6 players short of a premiership team however have 14 or so players that could potentially fill those roles if they reach their full potential. So if they all come on we'll definitely struggle to fit everyone in the team which will be a nice problem to have!

I'll have a go Yubby...

For kerr to come in it would mean 1 of Curnow, McKay or McGovern to exit fwd line.

For macreadie one of weitering, jones, plowman out?

Williamson for Thomas, Gartlett, Newman, Simmo?

TDK for Kreuzer?

LOB / Stocker not sure who... curnow, Murphy?

And what about Marchy where does he fit?

Cant see all of these finding a regular spot that quickly unless there is massive injuries or form drop off.

But yes depth, is very exciting if they all develop to the talent potential they should we will be in an extremely strong position.

Looking at it right now Taranto vs Coniglio is potential vs proven form. Taranto has the potential to an A grade midfielder but Coniglio has proven form as an A grade midfielder. A players trade value and salary should be on there proven form not there potential. There have been a lot of cases where a player was traded on potential and has never lived up to it and clubs have burnt top picks on average player. In saying that IMO by the end of year Taranto could have proven form, he's ready for a break out year.
The fabled 3rd year mid jump does seem apparent for Taranto.

Let's not forget he is a fellow top 6, 2016 draft alumni along with SPS and Setterfield! Taranto is a pipedream but lets get around our boys!

Boom boom

Re: our list numbers and the mid-season draft for Doc’s & JP’s return...read from the bottom

“The Blues have confirmed they intend to use one pick - and possibly two - at the new mid-season draft.
The club said they would wait and see how Docherty progressed during the season before making the call on whether he would be replaced in mid-season with a draftee.”

Soapy i love it...but!

Who do they replace?

Kerr and TDK into a forwardline of Charlie, McKay and McGovern???

Could be anyone. Form, fitness, development etc. I know whatever side we name next week it will look very different come the end of the year

Sure, but our best 3 forwards: Charlie, McKay and McGovern are fairly consensus by now. Barring injury, it's unlikely that Charlie and McGovern lose their spot. McKay looks better this year too but he'd be the one to feel pressure from TDK and Kerr. Good problem to have, with 6 strong-ish KPFs now.

Seniors: Charlie, McGovern, McKay

VFL: TDK, Kerr, Casboult

Do you think all three will play 22 games each? TDK can play ruck, Kerr in defence, McGovern in defence, Charlie wing or on ball. Lot to play out yet

Yes, that is the hope. Or at least not miss more than 2-4 games.

Our ruck stocks are stacked...Kreuzer, Phillips, Lobbe

Our KPD stocks are stscked...Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman, Jones

Your earlier post is optimistic, and as I said I love it. But TDK and Kerr are unlikely to play 1sts without injuries.
