He had a pretty ordinary year at Peel didn't he? Regardless, I I'd be interested to hear which of our inside mids you would have dropped so Banfield could play in his preferred position.
It’s not about dropping anyone, it’s about opportunity whilst in the team. He played 7 games this year & was given very little opportunity in the middle to win his own ball.
Are we not ‘rebuilding’? If so then play him as part of the midfield rotation & see if he is of any value moving forward.

No disrespect to MDB, but I think that you could put a lot of players in his position who could have a similar output. All you need is fitness and a bit of niggle. If we made guys like Banfield or Blakely or Crowden taggers then they could arguably do similar, but obviously Freo don't want to play taggers atm. I have no issues of de-listing MDB

Banfield had a very good year according to his 15 votes in the Sandover from 11 games. He played as a midfield beast who could tag and protect Fyfe when he was playing 1st's last year.

The question is who took over his position in the midfield and wasn't as good at it, and why?

The fact is, it would be great to play Banfield in the middle as no one currently knows how to put a block or a shepherd on for Fyfe. BUT, when we can't even fit Blakely, Cerra or Brayshaw in the middle, how the hell are we going to fit Banfield, when he is way behind those three in the pecking order?

It amazes me that we dont have any room in the midfield when are midfield is so s**t
It's because we have midfielders who aren't that good yet can't play in any other position i.e. Conca and Tucker. I, and am sure most Freo supporters, would prefer to see Blakely/Brayshaw/Cerra in the midfield over the two above names, but Conca and Tucker can't really play fwd or back whilst the other 3 can.

Plus, we kinda need guys like Mundy and Walters in there to help Fyfe, so our midfield 5 is usually Fyfe, Mundy, Walters, Tucker and Conca, leaving minimal time for Brayshaw/Blakely/Cerra and even Bewley/Crowden/Banfield to rotate through

Why do you think our midfield is s**t?

It amazes me that people are still stuck on this. We regularly won the clearances and contested possession count. Finished the season with a positive team differential in both categories.

Fyfe and Walters are both top shelf midfielders and have 4yrs left. Add Brayshaw and Cerra who both hopefully have 10yrs left. Tucker and Blakely(?) aswell.

Valente has ball winning ability and good foot skills to boot.

Then we still have Mundy and Conca there to protect the kids as they build up.

Apart from Conca who spot does Banfield take? Do we prioritise games into Valente or Banfield?

Mundy. Haven't seen anything that suggests Valente should be in the middle in 1sts yet, or any position in the 1sts, Brayshaw deserves to go in, but Banfield did a huge job on the opposition's best midfielders last year that we didn't want him to do at all this year. I don't think promoting Conca over Banfield this years was any advantage for us at all, and was to the detriment of a big body taking heat off Fyfe.

Also. I'm not sure if there is a link between contesting possession deferential and ladder position, we need to improve our forward structures and goal kicking and I've seen no indication at all yet (appointing assistants goal kicking specialist etc) that the club is doing anything to do this next year.

I am with you. The numbers don’t suggest the midfield is rubbish. They often worked to a losing ruck.

I think there was a problem with dependence on too few. When Mundy dropped off after the early part of the year and Sonson dropped off his extreme peaks, things fell away a bit, I think.

Add StKilda’s pick 55 to Freo.

May get it done.

I think Freo will be reluctant to give up 24. Pick 12 is a dangerous spot with Henry.
It is dangerous spot but it does pull out one of picks that could be bid on for Henry.

The problem is that 12 will pull back to 14 with GC PP1 or PP11 and Tom Green GWS bid match coming in the top 6. I’d prefer we wait till trade night and have some sort of agreement in place with Bulldogs.

If Henry is still available at 13/14 we pull the trigger on the trade of 13, 42 > 21, 25

Nothing wrong with inside mids but without replacing hill and langdon we may become one paced.
The other area that needs work is kicking inside fifty which means half forwards.

I’m certain our new coach will find a way.

Is Luke Partington worth a second chance if we need midfield depth?
I think yes, some kids just aren’t mature enough when they first come into the system. He is definitely worth a chance.
Our problem is we have a few “speculators” on our list in Bewley, Banfield, Duman along with Crowden, North & Colyer who all have at least another year to run, except North who has yet to be decided upon I presume.
In any case I think he’ll go sooner than we’ll want to use a pick on him & I don’t think he’ll be there to rookie list.
A few clubs will be hoping to find the next Tim Kelly.

Anyone have any info on whether Freo is still interested in Tim Kelly?

Do Freo fans want the club to pursue TK during trade season?

I think they probably do, and will go through the motions, but understand deep down it probably won’t happen, and I’m totally ok with that.
Would rather save the draft picks and find out own talent and save the $$

Makes a lot of sense.

Who do you reckon Freo use 5/6 on in the draft?

I'm really liking Robertson, but if we trade for Kelly, probably won't have picks high enough for any of the higher profile WAFL lads

Just say if we trade for Kelly, we’d miss out on Henry, our first pick id look at the likes of, Stephens/Ash/Kemp (has the bung knee) but the kid could be the next Fyfe or even poor mans Martin, and you’d save hundreds of thousands on contract so you could even look at the likes of Narkle/Robertson/Acres etc
