Ballas will need to get fit and stay that way to be a chance. No point in carrying 30+ that never play (Sandi gets a pass because he is/was awesome).

He’s still got plenty of toe and has been an asset in the forward line the last couple years, so yes, if he stays fit I think he’ll get another year.

He might.

He does like money and enjoys the contest.

Also, he can play forward and reduce his midfield minutes.

Still playing great footy,
But the problem is, playing one season too many. I’m sure he has that at the back of his mind.
North is really a difficult one. He’s not rated for some reason. Can be a Neale type player. Rake up the possessions and gets involved inside. Just injured at crucial times. Brayshaw have said he’s one of the better Victorian players, I think it was.

Sandi
McCarthy
Meek
Kersten
Ballantyne
Jones

Bennel ?
North ?

That’s 6 probables and 2 unsure.
I feel that’s probably going to be looked at.
McCarthy not getting a game with Lobb and Tabs out, is very telling. Suggests perhaps has something mentally going on? His efforts and desire for Peel seems lacking. I’d put Dixon ahead of him now, young and raw potential that gives everything.

Aren't a couple of our NGA players projecting as small forwards? Henry and Western? I'd be comfortable letting Ballas go.

Ballantyne would combust if he tried to do the off the ball work Switkowski does, that’s if he keeps his feet and is able to even get to the contest, he’s as mobile as a ruck these days
I don't know if that is true since I don't get to watch live very often. What I do know is Sam has kicked as many goals in his 10 games as Ballas did in round 23 last year.

Switta does some good stuff, but he also barely touches the ball or kicks a goal.

I don’t think it’s his role to hit the scoreboard, and Ballantyne is pretty much at the point he’s a net negative even when kicking goals for the rebound he lets through

Is that even true though? Ballas may not be what he was but it still looks like he is pressuring on TV.

Also, I know Sam should first and foremost apply pressure, but he is still a forward. No doubt he will improve but 0.4 gpg as a specialist forward is not good enough.

We're talking about a guy that's played about 10 games. He's proven he can pressure well. Now give him time to see if he can convert on the scoreboard. I think unfortunately for Switta, he's the only one that pressures in our forward line so it compromises his ability to get into good positions close to goal. I'm hopeful that the goals will come, as we certainly need his pressure.

I am not sure of the reasons because you can't accurately gauge that stuff on TV but I'll tell you now, he will have to find more of the ball and kick more goals over time else he won't make it.

Happy to give him a go and I don't even mind if it is ahead of Ballas, but I have seen nothing from him that suggests he is a better footballer than Ballas. There is a distinction there.

Veterans do have that question of playing one too many.

Only Ballantyne, Mundy and Sandilands are in that conversation.

I would keep Mundy on a yearly contract but retire the other two.

But the problem is Switter is a better footballer then Ballas NOW. Ballas was a great footballer, pressure and creating goals a few years ago. But now he’s not that level anymore. Switter is the best we got in that role now.

Ballas clearly isn't the same player as he was in 2014, but is still comfortably better than Switta or Schultz as it stands.
Yeah. But what about next season? A year older, he was slow to recover from injury this year. Hasn’t played AFL at all in 2019. So then what’s his chances next year . That’s the main thing

I reckon there would have been quite a few with the same opinion of David Mundy last year, in fact I know a lot called for him to retire. Ballas is two years younger than Mundy and I don't think it's a coincidence that our forward line was at its best in the game Ballas played.

I put him in the same bucket as Sandi - he's not necessarily going to be the game changer himself any more, but the knowledge and experience he brings (both at AFL and WAFL level) will be vital to our young guys' development.

Switta may run and chase better than Ballas (honestly I can't tell on TV) but 100% Ballas does everything else better from what I have seen.

Just to be clear. My position was and still is that Ballas is a better footballer now than Switta or Schulzt are. They would have to do something significant at AFL level to change that (or Ballas to play and show further signs of regression).

That doesn't mean I think that Ballas should stay on the list in favour of either of them or be given games ahead of them this year. Pretty sure you could find posts from last year where I said Ballas should be retired to give the opportunities to others.
