There are no caveats to the status. It's about being in top at the end of the year in whatever class/discipline.

He has elite speed and now he's learning to hone his race craft to run with the leaders. He finished the last race with the best pace of the Ducatis, was too respectful and cautious of the official boys.

Yes, we have been down this path before and came to the conclusion that whilst the blue riband class has the greatest champions, some of history's most legendary riders are from the lower classes (Nieto, Saarinen, etc). The idea that Moto3/2 are merely stepping stone classes is a relatively recent phenomena.

Correct. But he's now crashing fighting for podiums. He's more than a sideshow.

Nup, not good enough. Falling off often is brainless and will cost him better rides later on. It's already cost him.

Stoner was in contention for a title by the time he'd spent as long in Moto GP as Jack has

Jack is a really, really talented rider but Stoner was generational. Casey would've been a rookie MotoGP world champion if he'd been on the Repsol Honda instead of Pedrosa.

That was a hell of a qualifying session.

Drying conditions with late rain. The field split in half on going to slicks versus staying on wets. Marquez gambled and it paid off in ridiculous fashion - grabbed pole by a crazy 2.5 seconds. Miller also gambled on slicks and crashed in pouring rain in the last corners. Fortunately not before setting the second fastest time.
The biggest surprise being Johann Zarco going well in the damp conditions, qualifying at the opposite end of the grid to his usual and grabbing the final spot on the front row of the grid.
