While he couldn't have pulled out completely as you have momentum in a spoiling contest, he was very late, the Crows player had jumped off the ground and taken the ball cleanly with both arms extended above his head (didn't fumble or juggle at all) and had almost landed with the ball down around chest level before McDonald even got to him. McDonald knew before he got there that it was a mark because he tried to contest the ball when it was around his chest level and it was already a mark by then and he would have known it. You can't see someone take the ball above the head and contest the ball at chest level and not realise it was a mark. He should have made every attempt to minimise contact by just putting his arms out to cushion the force of running into him.

It seemed obvious as day that he knew he had taken the mark and he wanted him to "earn it" but he executed poorly because he concussed him.
He was lucky he didn't get a higher grading.

This shouldn't be confused with legitimate spoiling attempts where the contact was made at the point the opponent got hands to the ball, McDonald was late enough to know it was a mark already and could have minimised contact.

NORTH Melbourne midfielder Ben Cunnington has been offered two fines for separate striking incidents stemming from Friday night's loss to Port Adelaide.

The first case was against Robbie Gray during the first quarter and was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the body.

The second incident saw Cunnington elbow Brad Ebert during the third quarter and was graded as careless with low impact to the head.

Both were classified as second striking offences, which carry a fixed financial sanction of $5000, or $3000 with an early guilty plea.

Meanwhile, teammate Jasper Pittard can also accept a fine after being charged by the Match Review Officer with striking Port's Connor Rozee in the first quarter.

The charge carries a $2500 fine for a first offence, dropping to $1500 with an early guilty plea.

Is there actually any evidence that Pittard struck Rozee? Looked like he was staging for a free kick.

Surely if he did actually make contact that is the definition of insufficient force?
If it was for that incident then seriously, the process is just corrupt. Bloody what's 'is name from Geelong gets away with what should have been a suspendable offence, s did Fyfe, Mitchell, even dusty before this year. At least be even handed FFS.

Star of the competition rule.

Pittard getting fined for that is a joke. Rozee should be fined for staging.

He flopped all night. He will quickly become hated unless he gets that out of the game. Embarrassing.

Wow, I'm shocked on Cunners.

You can make a case either way for the Ebert one, so a fine is a compromise.

But I thought he was gone on the Gray punch. I mean, he has priors, and Gray was off the ground for a fair bit of time. I reckon Port's medical report may have done us a huge favour.

What did Sammy Wright get for the "dangerous tackle"?

Straight to the tribunal - looking at 4 weeks minimum. Intentional, high impact, and the bloke didn’t even have the ball for 1/8th of the tackle!
