Match Review Panel member Jimmy Bartel says AFL must change rules to enforce crackdown on punching

GILBERT GARDINER, Herald Sun
May 29, 2017 8:51am

FRUSTRATED AFL match review panel member Jimmy Bartel has indicated players will no longer get the benefit of the doubt when the panel determines the severity of cases.

The MRP will today consider Sydney hard nut Zak Jones’s strike on Hawthorn forward Luke Breust, the first incident to come before panel since the AFL last week warned clubs of a crackdown on punching.

AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean last week put players on notice, but stopped short of changing MRP guidelines.

But panellist Bartel admits decisions could be open to challenge unless the league changes the “parameters” for suspending players.

“If you don’t change the parameters I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do,” Bartel told RSN 927.

“To get it up to weeks well then you’ve got to manufacture something on the table.

“We might have to, it’s almost opening up a case, and this is hypothetically, where we’ve got to escalate it there which makes it really open to challenge.”

A series of nasty incidents in the fiery clash between North Melbourne and Melbourne prompted the new stance on punching, a week after Richmond captain Trent Cotchin sensationally escaped penalty for striking Fremantle midfielder Lachie Neale.

Under current MRP guidelines — as they are written — Jones would attract a low impact grading and $1000 fine for striking Breust.

While careful not to speak directly on Jones’ matter, Bartel suggested the panel must shift its thinking when making decisions.

“I think previously people would have liked the MRP ... to be in favour of the players but clearly they don’t want it to be,” Bartel said.

I've always said that's the most important thing about running a competition - what the media and fans latest thought bubble is. No point worrying too much about integrity, consistency and fairness... they're old fashioned issues. /s

Other incidents assessed

Contact between Port Adelaide’s Charlie Dixon and the Geelong Cats’ Joel Selwood from the second quarter of Thursday’s match was assessed. Selwood had received the ball from team mate Zac Smith, when Dixon came towards him to pressure the Geelong player from his position of standing the mark. Dixon made body contact to Selwood and a free kick was paid downfield at the time. It was the view of the panel there was insufficient high contact to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne and the Sydney Swans’ Sam Reid from the second quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The panel said Reid had the ball and was trying to break clear from a group of players. The Sydney player came towards Burgoyne, who tackled Reid immediately. Burgoyne lost his feet in the tackle while Reid sought to dispose of the ball as he was taken to ground. While Burgoyne was falling, he used Reid’s momentum to take him to ground and the panel said there was no sling motion or double-action in his tackle. Reid was not rotated or driven with excessive force into the ground and it was the view of the panel no further action was required.

Once again the MRP picks and chooses who they want to suspend. I don't want burgs or waite to get suspended but zero consistency. Now unclear more than ever, especially when lynch was the one that aided the KO.

Murphy and mullet incident also no different to cunnington and duryea

Not shocked with the MRP dancing around broken glass like three legged dingos. :drunk::rolleyes::huh:

They TALK up the 'no punching' and Zac Jones gets a pat on the back for obvious intentional strike!! Deluded hypocrites!! Just what we needed, thanks to a Swans player to test the AFL new 'tweaks' interpretations. MRP Lotto is a laughing stock once again!!
