1976 Grand Final

21 kicks, 21 handballs, 15 marks, 21 hitouts. Try telling Rick Davies he needs to attend a Collective Minds camp.

Two years later, the SANFL Grand Final saw a Sturt side which, in the public imagination at least, occupied the role of 'David' fronting up to Port Adelaide's 'Goliath' in front of an all time record crowd officially given as 66,897, but almost certainly at least 10,000 more. It proved to be one of the most memorable afternoons in South Australian football, with Davies' deceptively casual 21-kick, 21-handball, 15-mark, 21-hitout performance the most eye-catchingly significant feature of the Double Blues' eventual 41-point win. "From the beginning of 1974 to the end of 1976 he (Davies) controlled every match he played in", recalled teammate Phil "Sandy" Nelson years later. "For those 60 or 70 games he had football by the short and curlies. Very few people could do that. Rick did it."
I was there in 76 and at one stage the announcer asked the crowd to stand up and take a step to their left so they could fit more people in! Couldn't quite work out the maths on that one.
The crowd spilled out onto the ground inside the boundary line all around the oval. Saw an old video on You Tube of spectators hanging off the time clock!

There were quite a few stars of the SANFL who to the VFL, like Davies. Most went over when they were too old. Russell Ebert, Craig Weston, Robert Klomp were just a few. Shortly after this period the VFL started chasing the younger players like Bradley, Kernahan and Motley
Even then those younger guys each played around 100 SANFL matches before heading over, so by then they were primed for the VFL comp.
Of the older guys I think Weston timed his run the best, playing in a flag with Essendon.

Former Sun, Centrals and current Norwood.listed player Josh Glenn tests positive to anabolic steroids.

Wasn’t that already news or was that something else he was up for?

It was a pretty strong rumour since the time he was 'dropped' from Norwood's side late last year. Now we know why he was 'dropped'.

There was also a separate incident when he was at Williston (in between his time at Centrals and Norwood), resulting in Williston's major sponsor saying either he goes or they go. Norwood picked him up following that incident.

Had the talent to make it to the AFL (he walked from Gold Coast after one season), but wasted it.

He's a realist. Don't think he's got an ego.

Like he said, SANFL is not much behind the time commitment of AFL without the financial rewards, so you have to get a day job as well.
If you're lucky enough to pull a good paying real job with long term security it's a no brainer really. Why knock yourself out when you can earn as much in the ammos anyway + play with your mates.
Totally deserved to go number 2. Totally deserved to be captain at an early age of that group. Totally worked too hard with his training and hit the pavement extra. Totally buggered his foot. Totally went through everything to get back again. Totally did and gave his all. Totally wouldnt gaf if he went back to play with his mates over playing SANFL. Ego lol.

one too may "totally" for my liking but good post.

Caught up with my bro and nephew last week. Nephew is content to play for one of his local teams over being a top up. He's getting just under what the Crows were paying him without all the training time. Asked him about Jordan Boyle and he said Westies made Jordan a good offer and no guarantees from the Crows he would be rookied so he took Westies offer.
Ties in with what Jack Trengove is saying. BTW young Jack was a star until he hurt his foot.

True.
Pisses me off that ultimate pros like that can get a shortened career by working too hard at their craft.
Running is in the genes in that family though so that’s what he did for extras.

Carlton fines 10k Essendon 5k Western Bulldogs and Richmond 2.5k gor not recording where players are 24/7 for ASADA out of competition testing.

Should strip all of those clubs their first pick in the draft instead.... It is what would happen to us.
It didn't when our players did it

Have a look at the healthy foods mentioned by the Advertiser in regards to increased prices at Adelaide oval... No wonder we are getting fat!
