NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports interim coach Gregg Williams isn't considered "anything close" to a frontrunner for the Browns' full-time job.

This isn't a surprise — Williams was never more than a placeholder. The Browns have had a second half turnaround under OC Freddie Kitchens, but there's no mandate to keep Kitchens or Williams under the new coaching staff. Williams won't struggle to resurface in another defensive coordinator role this offseason.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Josh McDaniels is a possible candidate for the Packers' head coach job.

The Packers are casting a wide net in their search to replace Mike McCarthy. They've already met with Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano, and have been linked to Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald. McDaniels was nearly packaged with Green Bay GM Brian Gutekunst when he interviewed for the 49ers' job in 2017, so there's some familiarity between the sides. The Browns are also expected to have McDaniels interest.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden is expected to return in 2019.

The Redskins have tanked since losing Alex Smith to a season-ending injury, losing five of their last six games. Gruden's coaching was criticized by his own players at times this year, with D.J. Swearinger and Mason Foster calling out the team. Washington has been at the center of controversy under Gruden, who played a role in letting Kirk Cousins go and bringing in Reuben Foster. With no quarterback in place, the Redskins don't have much choice but to give Gruden another year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Jets are expected to fire Todd Bowles.

This has been fully expected. Bowles has a .394 career winning-percentage and hasn't had more than a five win season since 2015. The Jets are likely to keep GM Mike Maccagnan, who will help pick the next coach. With a franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold and the second-most cap space in the league, New York is one of the most attractive openings this coaching cycle.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Adam Gase's future with the Dolphins is "in real doubt."

Owner Stephen Ross is expected to make sweeping changes this offseason. Gase, EVP Mike Tannenbaum, and GM Chris Grier are all in danger of being fired. Gase hasn't lived up to the coach Miami thought they were getting, with the Dolphins ranking near the bottom of the league in every offensive category the last two seasons. He's also clashed with multiple players — trading away Jay Ajayi and giving up early on DeVante Parker. Gase has been handicapped by Ryan Tannehill as his quarterback, so it wouldn't be surprising if he resurfaces in a weak coaching class. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is a known supporter of Gase.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports the Bucs are the team Mike McCarthy has "been connected to the most."

The Bucs are expected to move on from Dirk Koetter after two straight losing seasons. McCarthy wouldn't help Tampa's defense, but the Bucs could bring him in to turn around Jameis Winston given his history with quarterbacks. Despite a falling out with the Packers, McCarthy is one of the hottest retreads in a down coaching cycle. He's also been linked to the Cardinals and Jets.

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reports the Packers have been connected to Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald as a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer also linked Fitzgerald to the Packers. Fitzgerald has strong ties to CEO Mark Murphy, who hired him back in 2006 as Northwestern's Athletic Director. Green Bay interviewed a pair of retreads in Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano, but neither feel like serious candidates. Fitzgerald's had NFL interest in the past but it was never enough to lure him from his alma mater. A proven track record (.576 Win Percentage) at the college level with not much left to prove, it may be time for Fitzgerald to make the jump.

Dirk Koetter begins to say his Tampa farewells

On Sunday, Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter will finish his third — and likely his last — season as an NFL head coach, with the Buccaneers. Via JoeBucsFan.com, Koetter spent time at the end of his weekly Friday night radio show bidding farewell to Tampa fans. “Whether I’m here or not, I’m always going to be [more]

Which coaching jobs will be vacant after Week 17?

Several years ago, the shopping nightmare known as Black Friday trickled into Thursday. The same thing has happened with the NFL’s Black Monday; for the most part, the coaching vacancies are known by Sunday night.

This year, two happened during the season (Browns and Packers). The consensus seems to be that four more coaching job will come open as soon as Sunday night: The Jets, Broncos, Buccaneers, and Cardinals.

So with Todd Bowles, Vance Joseph, Dirk Koetter, and Steve Wilks expected to get their walking papers, who will join them?

Maybe no more. Maybe several more. For other teams that may be considering making a coaching change, the biggest question continues to be whether a significant upgrade is available. If not, coaches otherwise in trouble will get another year.

Possible hot spots continue to be Baltimore (if John Harbaugh wants out and if another team makes the Ravens an offer they can’t refuse), Miami (Stephen Ross would possibly make a change only if he thinks he can get John Harbaugh), Cincinnati (if Marvin Lewis doesn’t walk away, Mike Brown likely wouldn’t fire him, since Lewis would be paid to not work in 2019), Jacksonville (Doug Marrone has presided over the disintegration of a Super Bowl contender), Washington (who knows what Daniel Snyder is ever going to do?), Detroit (G.M. Bob Quinn won’t fire Matt Patricia, but what if Martha Firestone Ford decides to fire both of them?), Atlanta (Dan Quinn is believed to be safe), and Carolina (Ron Rivera should be safe, but new owner David Tepper is an unknown quantity at this point).

Then there’s the firing/resignation/retirement that would count as a surprise, one of which seems to happen every year. This year, the surprise would come from, if anywhere, the teams that aren’t currently regarded as potential places for change: New England, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Indianapolis, Houston, Oakland, Kansas City, L.A. Chargers, Philadelphia, Dallas, N.Y. Giants, Minnesota, Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, and the L.A. Rams.

And here’s the thing to remember, especially with the Browns and Baker Mayfield looking for a new coach. One or more coaches who are gainfully employed and not in danger of being fired may want to move to Cleveland or to Green Bay or to one of the other jobs that will be open. While the specific outcome would be a surprise, the general concept shouldn’t be; both of those jobs should be viewed as very attractive, with Cleveland perhaps being the most attractive vacancy in years.

If Fox 10 Report is True, Bidwill is the Cardinals’ #1 Problem

By Walter Mitchell Dec 27, 2018, 7:27am MST

Last night Fox 10 in Arizona reported that the Cardinals intend to fire highly embattled rookie head coach Steve Willis, yet Michael Bidwill has decided to give GM Steve Keim another year to try to piece back the Cardinals’ current wreckage.

If this report is true—-it leaves no doubt whatsoever that Michael Bidwill is the #1 reason why the Cardinals are incompetent.

Tannenbaum’s expected departure could spark overhaul of Miami front office

The weekend report that Dolphins V.P. of football operations Mike Tannenbaum is all but certain to be fired is if anything becoming more certain as Week 17 approaches. So if/when Tannenbaum goes, what happens next?

At this point, no one knows. Chris Grier serves as the G.M., but he doesn’t have true G.M. powers. As Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald explained it over the weekend, coach Adam Gase holds the contractual final say over the team.

Salguero also suggested that the Dolphins should offer Gase an extension and a raise, along with a reeling in of his authority. And that may become a necessity, given what the Dolphins could be planning for the future.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bucs OC Todd Monken is expected to draw head-coaching interest this offseason.

Monken is one of the hottest coordinators after leading the Bucs to a top-three offense. He took over playcalling from Dirk Koetter this year, coaxing career games out of Ryan Fitzpatrick and helping develop a loaded receiver depth chart. Monken has college head coaching experience with Southern Miss, where he coached from 2013-2015. We'd be surprised if Monken didn't land a few interviews this offseason.

NFL reminds teams of procedures for contacting college coaches
Posted by Mike Florio on December 28, 2018, 10:53 AM EST

Jim Harbaugh may not have any representatives. But he has a boss. And if any NFL team will be pursuing Harbaugh, the NFL team must first approach Harbaugh’s boss on bended knee. Per a league source, the NFL reminded teams at the December ownership meetings that, before a college coach may be contacted, the team [more]

NFL reminds teams of procedures for interviewing employees who have resigned or retired

The annual coaching carousel soon will spin, and the league has been working to compile a list of recommended candidates for the looming array of vacancies.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the first tier of coaching candidates consists, in no particular order, of Cowboys defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Kris Richard, Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt (a two-time former head coach), Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak (former coach of the Titans), Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (former Broncos head coach), former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores, and former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell.

The second tier consists of Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen (former Raiders coach), Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley (former Jaguars head coach), Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell, Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale, and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

Packets for each candidate will be made available to the teams that will be hiring a head coach without the use of an outside consultant. (The Packers, for example, aren’t using a consultant.) The Career Development Advisory Panel for 2019 consists of Bruce Arians, Bill Cowher, Dick Daniels, James “Shack” Harris, Charley Casserly, John Madden, and Jimmy Raye III.

Madden is a highly influential voice on the panel, given his ongoing relationship with the NFL’s coaches. Arians is an intriguing presence, given that he has openly stumped for the vacancy in Cleveland.

Career Development Advisory Panel recommends several G.M. candidates

It’s not clear how many true General Managers jobs will be available in early 2019 — jobs that may or may not entail full and complete control over the roster and/or the draft.

For any G.M. jobs that come open, whether those that have final say or that don’t, the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel has compiled a list of viable G.M. candidates. PFT has obtained the list from a league source with knowledge of its contents.

They are as follows, in no particular order: Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin, former Giants G.M. Jerry Reese, Vikings assistant G.M. George Paton, former Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick, Saints assistant G.M. (and former Dolphins G.M.) Jeff Ireland, 49ers senior personnel executive (and former Lions G.M.) Martin Mayhew, Jaguars G.M. Dave Caldwell (who is available for a G.M. job that entail control over the football operations, since he doesn’t have it in Jacksonville), Washington senior V.P. of player personnel Doug Williams, Cowboys assistant director of player personnel Will McClay, Patriots V.P. of player personnel Nick Caserio, Ravens assistant G.M./G.M. in waiting Eric DeCosta, and Chargers senior executive (along with current AAF Salt Lake G.M. and former Seahawks and Saints G.M.) Randy Mueller.

Some General Manager positions come open in January. Others come open after the draft. The number of expected vacancies this year is far from clear.

Tannenbaum has now left his last two teams in a mess, certainly cap wise. Think they’ll still count $13-$15m of Suh dead money next year. This is a guy who gave Cutler $10m and super fund to Julius Thomas amongst other mistakes.

Broncos Ring of Fame member Karl Mecklenburg says he’s “on the fire Vance Joseph bandwagon”

Denver Broncos Ring of Fame member Karl Mecklenburg didn’t like what he saw in his former team’s loss to the Oakland Raiders on Monday night. In fact, it’s led him to the point of believing the Broncos need to make a head coaching change. In a post on his Facebook page, the former Broncos all-pro [more]

As Elvis said in the Dolphins thread....all blame on Ross. He's supposed to be this elite corporate guy, so understands how to interview and find people for jobs. Yet, at the Dolphins, has continued to swing and miss with his football hires. Especially the scouting/personnel side of things, is where the Dolphins have disappointed.

Gase is to blame for Cutler, the self appointed QB whisper wanted him, could easily argue that Gase had a big say in Julius Thomas also being a former player of his at the Broncos.

By no means excussising Tannenbaum, just merely stating the Gase is Chip Kelly 2.0, prefers yes men over talent, yet the team is an even bigger s**t show with his yes men .. both shouldn't be allowed anywhere near player personal calls ever again.
