The USAFL does a brilliant job.

You also acknowledged AFL Canada as doing a brilliant job. Anymore or are you simply going to bandwagon?

They have had aussies involved from day one, and continue to have aussies involved to this day.

The USAFL have had Australians involved from day one, and continue to have Australians involved to this day.

That's the point.

The point is that as clubs and leagues mature and nationals take the place of Australians.
As leagues grow in numbers the percentage of Australians has decreased markedly and some have zero Australian players.
In the more recent times there has been a big push to accredit umpires from the ranks of nationals.
Even Australian coaches have disappeared from the scene.
Administrator positions were quite quickly taken up by locals as they know the local conditions best.
It is not beyond locals to acquire a piece of land, mark out an oval, install goal posts & point posts
and conduct a game of Australian Football with players and umpires.

W.r.t. the USAFL , the Americans are very business savvy, much better than Australians.
They have been very innovative in their approach to developing Australian Football.
it is doubtful whether Australian Football would have developed so much in the U.S.A.
without the innovation of the Americans. The Americans pioneered the idea of 18-a-side representative football between clubs
and 9-a-side football within clubs. In Britain, Australians actually delayed the introduction of other football formats
and thus restricting growth. Britain under-performed for a long time due to Australian influences wanting to only play
18-a-side "traditional" football.

What, were you looking for competitions that used 4 goalposts at each end?
You don't know the first thing about Australian Football as you have been found out.
if you had checked you wouldn't come up with this trash trolling talk.
List all Australian Formats overseas competitions, their formats for each club and league.
I have checked all the countries you mentioned and not one has a regular 18 a side comp played on ovals.
So stop telling porkies Walter Mitty

That was once the hope.
But from what I have observed over the past decade, I no longer believe that to be the case. The evidence is everywhere. All the overseas leagues start to regress if there isn't a constant rejuvenation of Australian input over a long period.
That's precisely the point!

I have just given you evidence to 18-a-side competitions. Are you disputing the evidence?
This isn't me making statements - this is evidence from independent sources.
Are you going against the statements of AFL Canada, the USAFL and wiki ?
Are you such an unintelligent troll that you cannot evidence presented under your nose?

The guy is a rugby league troll that is sad enough to create an account and post prodigously on an AFL forum. I would expect him to have the scruples to admit when he was wrong

Enough - take the international stuff to the international forum.

In fairness, the topic is participation.
If people keep to posting links there is no problem.
I apologise for posting so much international stuff but it has only been in response to certain statements.
The repetition (and thus the annoyance) comes from people being allowed to blindly and repetitively post option without backing things up.

Ive no issue with the topic, ive considerable issue with it taking over the thread.

For the record, we have two regular 18-a-side comps. AFL British Columbia's men's season in Vancouver runs 10 rounds plus finals. AFL Ontario's men's league (mostly in Toronto, but also with teams from Guelph, Hamilton and Ottawa) runs for 12 rounds plus finals. You can see the first purpose-built footy oval in Canada on Google maps here: http://bit.ly/2UetIDo

Calgary, Edmonton and Montréal all have 18-a-side representative teams. Montréal has five nine-a-side men's teams (and three women's). They have found it better to increase the number of teams rather than the size of the teams.

Calgary has also created the second purpose-built footy oval in Canada (not updated on Google maps yet, but it's at AE Cross school). They have two 18-a-side men's teams, but they play more often at regional tournaments.

That's great news. The number of countries with purpose built Australian Football ovals is growing.

Yes good progress by your guys. About time you started showing the ex Colonials south of the border how to play.

Wookie is reporting 21.4 that GR AF participation in 2019 is 1,716,000.

Also, FTA weekly ratings, since 2015, have dropped from 4,466,000 - 3,360,000 in 2019, a worrying & major drop of 24.8%.

On average, we are seeing, unfortunately, more boring & lower scoring games now. The AFL needs to urgently introduce rule changes, so that its AFL Charter Of The Game principles are achieved (ie a fairly free-flowing game, that is played in an attacking, high scoring style, with long kicking, high marking, & many one-on-one contests).

2018 was 1,649,178- so the increase to 2019 is an OK 4.1%.

Wookie, where did you get this 1,716,000 rounded figure from?

like the tweet says- all AFL data is from annual reports. AFL participation data was pretty poor in this years report, but they did give a total figure. Im not that worried about the tv ratings - mobile and streaming would account for a lot of that

1. M.Duldig, SANFL General Manager of Football, has stated that there are "over 55000 club (my emphasis) participants" in SA in 2019.

SA had c. 52,323 club participants in 2018.

The AFL, for 2019, has, generally, released less detailed (ie on a state-by-state basis, with various breakdowns) official regd. nos.- providing a total figure of 1,716,000 for 2019. We do have official, regd. nos. for Qd.& WA in 2019. There were 1,649,178 official regd. nos. in 2018.

Like all sports' official regd. nos., more than half the AF nos. are rubbery- with most being community events, one-off Gala days etc (far less significant).

2. The Age J. Niall 1.6

Niall says, re Victorian GR AF club competitions (ie he is not including school competitions & player nos.), there are "...an estimated 100,000 volunteers" in Victoria alone.

Sadly, Melbourne jnr & snr club football never started in 2020- & has now been abandoned in Melbourne in 2020, due to the disastrous covid-19 handling in Melbourne. This abandonment may have negative long term club financial, & player future retention, implications for GR AF in Vic.
Thus, the official AFL 2020 regd. nos. will require an asterix. GR winter sport is happening in all other states.

The no. of GR volunteers is not recorded or included by the AFL in its official regd. participant nos. Also, the AFL rarely even mentions the number of volunteers it has, on a state or national level.
It is a relevant consideration when comparing participation across various sports, because some other sports do include their volunteer nos. (& coaches/umpires etc.!) in their official regd. participant nos. (eg FFA includes volunteers, coaches, & referees in its official regd. particpant nos.).

EDIT:
3. Some country League competitions (7/40) until recently in Vic. wanted GR AF to start- not sure how many of these 7 will continue.

Auskick will continue in many areas in the Vic. country, outside of Melbourne.

Some Vic. country comps. may wish to continue female AF in 2020, ""...to showcase & shine a light on these competitions".

Qld GR AF regd. nos have now exceded 2019 nos., despite the season being shortened due to covid-19.
Amazingly, 42% of GR participants are female!

I suspect that the large female AF female playing nos. for Redcliffe FC (& far nthn. Brisbane) contributed heavily to Council & State funding of their new, $18m facility.
