I would rather just select as the draft order is and its just to get names out and would be easier to follow and alot less hassle to work out what picks would be re allocated

only real downside to this player would be his height at 178cm but a very solid well-rounded player, could play from round 1 next year as a small fwd who over the year/his career works out a mid/fwd role, a player that melbourne could use

Judging by the below it would appear that there are no matches of bids or trading of picks.

If GWS did match then it would cost them pick 6 to match with 243 points left over (allowing for the 20% discount) which would convert their pick 40 to pick 29

Picks don't move forward. The remaining points get allocated to the equivalent pick later in the draft. So 243 points would net them pick 53 & 73 in return.

Just had a look at the rules and there's an exception to the above "where a player is bid on in the 1st 18 selections"

Once the player has been “paid” for by the forfeiting of a single selection or multiple selections, there may be a surplus of points. With the exception of the circumstance set out below, those surplus points are converted to another selection in the current National Draft using the DVI.

The exception to the above point is where a player is bid for at pick 18 or earlier and the Club’s next available selection is worth more points than the value that must be paid to acquire the player. In this case, the surplus points are not converted to a selection in the current National Draft, but are retained and used to offset any deficit arising at the conclusion of this National Draft or future National Drafts.

I don't quite get what they're saying here.
Do they mean in this example, GWS use pick 6 to match & then their 243 excess points just sit in the bank until they next need to use points, whether it's later this draft, next year or beyond?
