Game Notes: Carlton v Hawthorn
New Rules

6-6-6 Start Positions

As expected there were a high number of centre bounces in which players starting Inside 50 didn’t impact the initial contest, there were minimal secondary stoppages inside the centre square after the first bounce.

Players that have a high clearances rate will likely excel under this new rule.

Kick-ins

It seemed as though Carlton were deliberately not using the new rule to full effect or were uncertain against real opposition, the Blues started to open up in the second half running out of the square but with limited behinds scored the sample size is small.

Hawthorn were as sharp as you would expect exploiting the run out of the goal square to the extreme, the destination of the ball landing was generally on the centre wing. Again a limited sample size, but the Hawks were definitely switched on with this rule.

Both clubs didn’t kick the ball through the corridor when kick-ins landed outside the 50m line, players taking kick-ins may be game situational with preferred players sometimes caught out of position.

Sam Walsh
What an impression, found plenty of ball, was sharp with his hands & appears to have good vision, played across Half-Back & attended a few centre bounces.

Will Setterfield
Played the 2nd half only, looked composed on the wing, attended a few centre bounces.

Michael Gibbons
Started Forward, found his way into the game in the 2nd half, found enough of the ball over this period, had quite a few centre bounce attendances throughout the game, put on a ripping tackle early in the game.

James Worpel
Had a high number of centre bounce attendances, definitely had an impact finding plenty of it.

James Sicily
Played in defence, pushed into attack to receive a handball for 2 shots on Goal from outside 50 with no opponent, had 2 kick-ins running well outside the goal square, it appears he is the preferred option for kick-ins.

Jaeger O’Meara
Played the 1st half only and was very impressive, his clearance work around stoppages and through traffic was a standout.

I love to have the balls to pick Omeara, just can't bring myself to do it.
