So I guess if we’re planning for next year it might be worth re-reviewing the players who would been in the optimal starting team this year (semi off top of my head) rough salary cap included.
Games played not just averages and for rookies early games and rookie money making considered most valuable.

Lloyd simpson yeo doedee Murray finlayson // richards cole ~2.1mil
Cripps coniglio titch macrae oliver telly Holman Stephenson // Higgins Fogarty banfield ~3.5mil
Gawn Grundy // English ~1.4 mil
Smith hoff menegola Sicily fritsch waterman // Rioli Henry ~2.5 mil

That should be under 10 mil. Despite preseason hype about midpricers guns and rooks again proved best.

Of mid priced options 250-450k
Sicily named - even though he missed games clearly averaged more than any other forward and could have been traded when out injured. Depending on exact salary though could easily exchange for Mundy or Robbie gray.

brayshaw, short and o’meara the only others that I can think of that were any consideration.

Other than the forward line the premos weren’t too out there.
Many of the popular rookies proved excellent choices. Just about finding the right combo!

I had 14 of the above in my starting team and added another 5 at various points in season. I started with 9 who stayed in the side all year. (Lloyd, savage, Cripps, Mitchell, cogs, Gawn, Smith, Neale + olango)

My starting picks that didn’t work
M crouch injury
R lob injury and shit
Savage shit
Venables shit
L Murphy shit
Brayshaw - built into it but took too long and didn’t make enough money
S Martin - good year but was forced to upgrade given Grundy was so much better.
Probably others I can’t remember.

So next year. I think def stick with the tried and true gnr. Some midpricers played well in patches but few could sustain or play the whole year.

:p Question then.....was Grundy in your starting side ?

I'm certainly not denigrating Grundy .....but it would be highly unusual for a 30 point average increase year on, to be maintained .....I'd expect a 10 point fall, to a 117 average
No Grundy wasn't in my starting side. Traded him in prior to round 5. I started with Nank in the hope he would have the kind of breakout season that Grundy had.
I get what you are saying and don't disagree. It's rare that a player averages more than 120 for two seasons in a row. Only the best of the best back it up. But what value do you put on a trade? I can see arguments for going both ways. Set and forget with Grundy and Gawn, or one of them and a cheaper with a view to upgrading. However, for me, if I'd got it right at the start that's one less trade I would have needed throughout the year.

Right now I'm set on starting with Gawn and Grundy next year, but a lot can happen between now and then. If someone like Darcy kills it in the preseason then I might be tempted to go the cheaper option, but it's just another trade I need to use at a later date.

My best year ever was last year when I went with mid priced madness at the start and finished in the top 200. With the depth of the upcoming draft I reckon next year will be GNR with only true breakout candidates and injury discounted players worth considering. Right now Dunkley stands out as a breakout player. Priced in the mid 90's but averaged nearly 130 in his last five games.

I love having these conversations because everyone has different views. It would be pretty boring if we all thought the same wouldn't it? I'm already looking forward to next year.

I agree ....that's what this forum is about ...yes there's the shit-stirring on gameday, but these debates are healthy, with no wrong answers

The debate i had pre-season, was do i start Robbie Gray R1 ..despite having a 1 week suspension ...now everyone said it was madness to start a suspended player (given he also had the bye)

But what cost a trade ? .......AND then how many Coaches held players like Fyfe, Kelly, Walters on their benches for multiple weeks ? ....what's the difference there, when i was only holding Gray for the 1 week
In hindsight i should have followed my gut and started Gray

Back to Grundy / Gawn .....i guess these decisions will be influenced by who's available for the rest of our teams .....our views now, may well be compromised, as we structure up teams ;)

Expect something different from me next year campaigners :moustache: Except Hurn obviously :rainbow:

This will be debated for 6 months which is good.
Clearly they were steals at 503 & 534K with their output this season. But with their prices next year you'll want the 130 averages straight away to justify the outlay. One bad week and you'll save yourself 100K.
I wanted Danger from the start but wasn't going to fork out 749K. I picked him up for 150K less and he's tonned up 12 times since.

I agree .....this is similar thinking to me ....however I'll look at the rest of the team, what value picks there are, and good available rookies, b4 making the call on Grundy / Gawn

It's common sense, but what i'm saying is ...Gawn / Grundy won't be my first picked .....they'll be my last decision

Locks for 2019:
Backs: Lloyd, Whitfield, Doch
Mids: Titch, Cripps, M Crouch/Zerrett at 100ave
Rucks: Gawn, Grundy
Fwds: Dusty, Danger (plz)
Will be watching Hannebery and Cockatoo closely over the pre season.

Bit early to be looking at non playing loophole options before the draw has even been released. :p

Duly noted.

Will do one with Gaff next year assuming he misses just the one ;)
Yeah, that's a good topic .....the other would be the current debate of starting 2 premium ruckmen Gawn / Grundy
