Just an FYI guys (I'm sure a lot of you probably already know this), but the collective price of the basement price rooks is 1.36 MIL (170K x 8). Just a handy tip for anyone who's putting their teams together and finds they're always exhausted for cash by the time they get to the rooks. Basically means that you have exactly 11.44 MIL to play with for your 'actual' team. So as long as you create your team and it costs 11.44 MIL or you have 1.36 MIL remaining, you won't waste time filling the rooks in to find your team is over budget and then have to cull elsewhere.

Started doing this last year, and it's been a life-saver. So hopefully it helps anyone else who might be having a bit of trouble :)

Initial 5 minute play around yielded the following:
DEF: Lloyd, Whitfield, Witherden, Williams (rookie) (rookie)
MID: Macrae, Crouch, Merret, Adams, Miles [FLOATING] Walsh (rookie)
RUC: Grundy [FLOATING]
FWD: Smith, Danger, Wingard Setterfield (rookie) (rookie).

Leaves me with a total of $3,240,000 to play with across 15 spots. Those spots comprise:
- 8 Bench Slots, 170k each = $1,360,000.
- 5 Rookies, avg 220k each = $1,100,000

Which leaves $780,000 for the floating players.. hmmn it may not be enough. That could be like Kreuzer and a Rookie but that's about it.

That will be an initial start. I think I will be focussing heavily on Defence and Midfield this year where possible.

This is just off of the top of my head, closer to the season i'll run it all through my spreadsheet and see what comes out.

So for your 5 rooks and and your floating players, you have $1,880,000.

Could go:

446K Ruck floating: English
434K Mid floating: Hanners
170K Mid rook: Constable/Hind/Atkins/Bewley etc.
182K Fwd rook 1: Cavarra
178K Fwd rook 2: Matt Parker
246K Def rook 1: Collins
170K Def rook 2: Hugh Goddard

Off the top of my head, should be 1.836 MIL. Leaves you with with 44K in the bank. Could also go Scrimshaw at 203K instead of Goddard :)

So ive decided to start with a no rookie backline as there seem to be lots of value mid-pricers. I'm currently going with:

Laird, Whitfield, Blakely, Newman, Williams, Hanley (Wigg, Hore)

With that backline im starting 3 rookies in my midfield and 3 rookies in my forwardline. My thinking is that i have the option of downgrading Hanley/Newman/Williams - most likely Hanley - to the stand out rookie after a few rounds. If there aren't any high scoring backline rookies and/or my mid-pricers are going really well then im happy to stick with my current group. At the moment i have created a team im happy with using the entirety of the salary cap. Its probably not ideal to start with a bank of $0 but it is somewhat satisfying :p

Doing a little analysis. What do we think these two combos avg?

Macrae (120) & Wingard (90)

Or

Kelly (115) & Menegola (100)

Given that the stats lean towards the latter, why does number 1 feel ‘better’ ?

Because number 1 is better. Especially if you don't have a captain yet. I'm not sure whats not to trust about Wingard exactly. Everyone struggles to score consistently in Port. Macrae is still getting better and Wingard has plenty of indicators from last year that he can put up tons when used the right way. Hawthorn will do that https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pg-hawthorn-hawks--chad-wingard

What are peoples thoughts on how Beams will effect the other Collingwood midfielders scores? I'm assuming given he will share midfield minutes that the likes of Pend/Adams/Treloar/Sidey will all have a small drop off this season?

Beams is on my short list of pre-season watches. If I get any idea that he will be breaking out there, I will be shoving him onto my team immediately.
