What happens if we don’t agree to a throw away pick for Sauce. Doesn’t Tomlinson pick get pushed back.
Good question ....depends on what pick we'd get for Jacobs under compo?

Think there is a good reason it hasn’t been announced yet. He’d be the only FA deal not completed yet wouldn’t he. I doubt we will get anything for him. So maybe just accept a late pick as a favour. We owe them for Carlton’s 2nd after all.

You can’t on one hand say you want to stay, then demand huge money.. sometimes staying is about taking less.
They’re loyal to themselves and money..

To be fair, this was Keaths last chance to set himself up after sport ....I certainly don't begrudge him

The difference there is he's working them hard, but it's a bonding experience they can all share. It's not deliberately designed to break them down and turn them on each other.

Exactly and many past Hawks players have spoken about it as an amazing experience but at the same time they were pushed to the edge but weren't "broken" and that bond is evident in all Hawthorn teams, and may play a large part in how they seem to turn players around.

Was Keath just about the $$$ like Greenwood? Or was he wanting to go anyway?

3 years seems no huge deal
I suspect a strategy to turn free hits (Cat B rookies) into draft picks.

The age they were when they came to us, Keath and Greenwood were going to be useful top ups for a few years during a premiership window. If they stay with us to retirement they become dead assets. Get something for them while they still have value and their value rolls on in our future list.

Given where we are at, it's good business sense.

Seems strange for us to be using it, since it's quite uncommon at our club.

It's almost like he was not wanted by anyone, then delisted with the promise of a rookie contract for one more season.

Even if you think the camp is s**t, that's a lot of money to leave on the table (especially as it's a decision that's seen Cam most likely make another million on top of the rookie draft pick).

It's all good to say now "why didn't he leave", he couldn't leave if he wanted a career at this level.
So why didn't the ALFPA say boo on it?

If it was that terrible surely they would have had a field day.

Don't sound like Brad's going anywhere

No doubt that’s completely true. What’s not said though is, “but he’s got 5 x $850k on the table from that rabble and we’re a fair way back with 3 x $750k with triggers for 4 and 5”. Of course we want to keep him and of course he wants to stay, but that means jack if the numbers are too different.

Tom Browne (via his supposed mail) saying he's expecting us to make a play for Fantasia on The Trade Game.

Why would we do that?

We need:
- premier midfielders
- tall backs

We do not need:
- small forwards

I'm pretty sure after Eddie goes, we'll only have Murphy and Stengle and McAdam and McHenry as small forwards. Panic stations for sure.

It is good business. But it shouldn’t be limited to rookies that turned out ok. We should be applying this accross the board. We need to manage our list in terms of age profile and what positions we have covered and are in need for. We are ok in terms of intercept defenders and our mids.

But the same way we have clearly been willing to sacrifice Greenwood and Keath we should be willing to do that with other players. Should have done that with Sloane and Lynch last year. It was a mistake. I would hope they can see that giving Sloane a $4m, 5 year deal was a mistake and Lynch a $2m, 3 year deal was also a mistake especially in a super draft year. But ok, I can cut them some slack and say they took a punt that we were in a window and got that wrong. If that is what their review in hindsight says then I’m ok with that. But if they are looking back at that, as well as what we gave up for Gibbs and not willing to admit that we got that wrong wrong then there is something wrong. Something is broken.

Maybe letting Greenwood and Keath go is rectifying past mistakes to a certain extent. I can get on board with that. We have to pay the price now for those mistakes. We’ve got an aging list with our most senior and highly paid players badly out of form (for the last 2 years). Get rid of JJ and Eddie. Cut Sauce and Douglas. Get back some ground that we lost by trading out Hugh and Keath. It makes sense to me.

But the big question for me is how they deal with Brad Crouch now. We must not over pay him or give him a contract that is too long. If we can restock our midfield by trading Brad and possibly Matt, we should do that. That would essentially undo all of the mistakes we have made in terms of list management for the past 2 years. It comes at a cost, yes. But don’t forget we got Matt by doing something similar.

We need to claw our list out of a hole that we have dug for ourselves. Keath, Greenwood, Eddie and JJ are a good start. I’m hoping against hope that the Gold Coast are going to save us.

Doubts on Stengle and Shane at this stage, and Neddy is no small forward. Murphy still a ?? For mine.

Fanta would come with a huge price tag though.

And it's Tom Browne....

To be fair, he did say that Port were still expecting to nab him. We're only really there if that falls through/to make Port pay more.
