Our worst fears are realised... gone for the season.

The main worry for him is if he can fix this going forward. Another frustrating year ahead for Jake, wish him all the best.
16 weeks, will be back round 16 or so. Will win the Norm Smith.

Why wasn’t Carlisle in for surgery months ago?

Absolute BS from our injury management department.
You a doctor? Do you know anything about treatment of back injuries.

FFS I get a bit sick of this dumb s**t.

Are you? Maybe you could answer the question instead of firing back like that. If it’s something that should be a simple answer, it wouldn’t take much.

Because you don’t just go for surgery on your back unless it’s the last resort. They are talking about releasing pressure on a nerve. Not great stuff.

Secondly Carlisle won’t make or break our season. Step up Austin or Clavarino

See that’s the problem with this club atm, we defend mediocrity and bad decisions, no I’m not a doctor nor did I say that I know why, I was just asking the question as to why arguably our “best player” wasn’t scheduled to get surgery earlier, since the occasion of the injury was last season.

I stand by my comment that our injury management is BS, it’s a mess.

Read Stavs comment.

Any back surgery is last resort. You don't just jump in right away.

Could you imagine if we went the surgery and they realised that they could have waited?
Did the same with Bytel. Talk to most back specialists and they will tell you surgery will always be last resort.

It's terrible that Jake has had to have surgery, but its obvious he has been carrying and restricted with the problem for a considerable period. Hopefully he can come back stronger and fitter than ever.

Agree it may not be the worst going forward as it will give those guys time to develop. I think we might be surprised with what they offer, Austin will definitely offer more rebound.

That is all
No one is suggesting otherwise.
But we can't give up on the season because of one player.
Time for the others to step up and close that gap. They won't be able to replace his quality but they can fulfil his role in the team.

Listen to doctors mate, might save your life one day.

The club doctors don't work alone and act in some kind of rogue fashion (maybe they do at Essendon). They consult each other, look at past cases. Even when I went to a guy who treats North's players to have him look at my ankle, he sent my scans to other doctors and was on the phone to them discussing the best way forward.

The most important thing is Jake's wellbeing and ability to live life in as pain-free a way as possible. Somewhere below that is having him play football again, and somewhere below that is getting him right for this season. I'm pretty confident that the club understands that, and hopefully supporters do too.

Actually, while I think that Jake is just about our best player, I think having Jake and Brown down back hurt our mobility a little bit coming out of defence. Am much happier with Brown being there if Jake's not. Not that I don't rate Brown. It's just that we didn't have the mobility to run it out, meaning if teams locked down on Webster and Sav we depended on Geary and Seb running and delivering out of our backline. We know how that went. Or the big switch, which everyone wised up to pretty early on.

Anyway, a bit undersized but could be a big quicker back there this year. Maybe Marshall or Bruce will have to drop back now and then.

Correct , good player but he isn't a game changer , well he hasn't been so far in his time at the saints , it gives the other lads a chance to step up knowing they will be getting a few weeks at least to show what they can do , Joyce would be hoping to get a run as well now

Carlisle is great when fit but he hasnt been 100% for sometime. The other thing it does is develop our depth of key defenders and given opportunity Austin and/or Clavarino could become the equivalence of Carlisle. Its not doom and gloom but it will make Henry Playfair earn his wage this year.

We should of picked up Roughead from bulldogs when we could of he was a FREE agent could of filled either CHB or RK if needed.
Hindsight ,,, Dont worry we will survive , as already said it gives others a chance and its not like we were going to contend for the flag this year anyway

It will be interesting how we line up and which fringe player will take Carlisle spot. I think it might also force Brown to be more attacking and proactive with the ball, which isn't a bad thing because he makes good decisions and isn't that bad of a kick (way better than Geary but that's not hard).

If Battle can come on as a defender, his running ability and attacking flair could really help with that mobility issue. I would avoid Bruce down back because his decision making and skills always worsen when under pressure. Logan Austin is another one who is a good replacement since he is a good interceptor but his inability to defend could hurt.

Im sorta glad this has come to the surface that he has had the injury for a while as several times last year he looked so slow running , maybe its been effecting him for a while

At least this injury happened pre-season and the club has been aware Carlisle will be missing/underdone for a while so it has given us time to come up with and train alternatives for him.

I can remember him having back problems at Essendon so it's not a new thing, its just a shame that other treatment methods haven't worked. Perhaps like all clubs he could have been rested and allowed the injury to settle much earlier, but no club will be transparent in these matters.

Or we could just admit making finals has just become 99% tougher without Carlisle.

Like having no Roberton last year
