I'm not over Docherty re-injuring the same knee and all that that will probably mean - a very very cruel blow to Carlton and anyway I cut it - it will cost five wins.

Feeling similar JAB , very bitter pill to swallow.
Consoling myself with thoughts of snaring an OOC Rioli/Gresham/Billings to work under McKay/Curnow/McGovern ...

as Arrow says . I too am not concerned at all by small forwards right now - the big problem is going to be ( again) the class required to get fast rebound happening out of defensive fifty...we let Tuohy go - because we had a plethora of HBF 'options'...I knew it would bite us on the bum. In 2019 - we have to see Weitering not only intercept marking - but also taking responsibility for more attacking kicks - all the defenders in 2018 seemed to retreat into a shell - afraid to take the game on by using longer kicks- either bad coaching or poor play or a combination of both - constant faffing around with short kick to kcik to kick which saw opposition get repeat entry after repeat entry OR just as bad Simpson with his dinky dummy to the right followed by a balloon ball to the pocket - easy pickings....:'(:'(

I am so down atm - and I can't see a ready-made replacement for Docherty's game :'(:'(:'(

Agree with your summation of our defensive rebound problems though happy with the Tuohy deal long term as the Doc situation was unforseeable.
A quality small forward is a glaring deficiency IMO.

From afl.com.au & our forwards. Interested to see how Owies goes this year with his transition. Think we’ll be rotating midfielders through there, especially minus Pickett around Chas, McKay, McGovern and Fas. Bugg may surprise as a choice too & there’s Polson and Garlett (if not turned into a defender).
SPS, Fisher, Murph, Cripps, Kennedy, Setterfield, Walsh, LOB, Dow, Lang, Stocker, Cuningham all can have stints forward with impact.

Really is impossible to replace the quality of a Doc, especially like for like.

I can see Newman playing a fair bit down back and while he may not have the intercept qualities of Doc, he does have a neat left peg
