Which part is horrendous? Stereotyping is deeply ingrained in human cognitive processes. We do it all the time in all sorts of ways. In a perfect world, every person is judged entirely as an individual without any preconceptions of any sort, but no one has the time or resources for that. In recruiting it is probably even more prevalent than usual, and in this context, the only question that really matters is whether it is getting you accurate results. Our recruiters have learned what we all knew, getting boys from well off families with expensive educations does not accurately predict who will become successful football players.
the idea that a white guy with a private school education and a good family is the benchmark of "good character"

he's just referencing the common attitude American sporting organisations have, or more specifically had. He's not endorsing the idea, you're reading way too much into it. For example listen to a sociology podcast, they're constantly stating common accepted beliefs so they can dissect it. They're not placing a value judgement on said belief.

Listen to the NYU intro to sociology lectures on youtube, not only are they super interesting by themselves, a big takeaway is that you need to be able to state the controversial belief to be able to address it.

And it's totally fair to say that minorities face more adversity and can often require more assistance in overcoming said adversity. It's not a weakness, it's just the reality of having the odds against you. Someone who grew up in an unstable and chaotic home is going to have more 'baggage' than someone with a typical privileged, safe environment.

Gallagher said nothing wrong, and that's coming from one of the more progressive, 'PC' members of this forum...

that certainly would make sense, as i know that is a big issue over there. government schools are seen in a very poor light.

the thing i don't understand is how that is relevant to us or the wider industry here as something to take back? unless he's saying that's a view shared by others within the industry e.g. others clubs or the AFL?

I'd say that there is a stigma attached to being outside the private school system when it comes to drafting. The irony is that hearing stories like Eddie Betts making his own way to footy training 45 minutes each way because his family couldn't afford a car and him not even being able to read or write until he became at AFL player suggests it's a narrow viewpoint that doesn't stack up to reality. I'd rather the committed kid who will give his all than a spoiled kid who will just go work in finance or fall back on a degree if footy gets too hard.

When it comes down to it , it's ability that gets you drafted and it will be the club that will have to straighten the kid up if he is going off the rails.

Dusty Martin is no brain surgeon same as De Goey , Ablett isn't to bright , the list goes on.

I figure up bringing comes into it when you are lining up kids that are close to the same ability and if they go to a private school they feel the kid could be more stable - easy cop out for draft selection.
