Game Day 2019 Syd Barker Medal count

I am so happy for Cunners. Was so consistent all season, I may have let out a fist pump at the pub when I got the notification on the app.
I met him as a 16 year old at a bbq on the Gold Coast, he was such a classy guy.

Tarrant and Goldy were great too, and i'm delighted they got runners up.

I’ve always thought that this board overrated Anderson and to a lesser extent Williams.

I think you may have mispronounced his/her name?

Anywho, wut else did you do
Spoke with Aaron Hall - is in a very good space now and was open. Had a few great moments with him.

Pittard was at our table every two seconds and wondered why we didn't rate his podcast number one but thought the Hrovat number one was fair enough.

Without naming the player in this conversation, we asked what he thought of Dougal Howard to North and the response was, "why? Durdin has him covered!"

Rolled my eyes at the number of players trotting out media speak when talking to them. s**t like, "yeah can't wait for the preseason, 110%, good to go round 1, doing my part" - *ing spare me!

Notional "decade B&F" based on top 10s from each Syd Barker count (10 points for winning through to 1 point for 10th place, treating all ties as equal finishes):

1st - Ben Cunnington - 58pts (winner 2014, 2019)
2nd - Brent Harvey - 46pts (winner 2010)
3rd - Todd Goldstein - 45pts (winner 2015)
4th - Jack Ziebell - 41pts
5th - Andrew Swallow - 39pts (winner 2011, 2012)
6th - Daniel Wells - 38pts (winner 2011, 2013)
7th - Robbie Tarrant - 34pts (winner 2016)
8th - Drew Petrie - 32pts
9th - Shaun Higgins - 31pts (winner 2017, 2018)
10th - Scott Thompson - 28pts (winner 2013)

Like what you’re trying to do here, but Drew, Wells, Spitta and Boomer haven’t played for a material chunk of the past 10 years. If you use an average or a rolling 10 years, those fellas will jump up the list somewhat. Someone else like Sam Gibson might also jump into the list.

If you are talking about this board's extremely basic voting system where the least worst player in a 100 point loss earns the same number of points for that game as a 30+ contested possession game in a win against the top team, then yeah, the Syd Barker makes sense. Big Footy board voting system needs an overhaul desperately.

It's hard enough to get more than 20 people to vote after a loss. Don't make them think about it as well.

Too many average guys in our team, hence we are average. The concerning thing is he’s top 3 in our b&f.

I actually forgot about Trent when picking a top 10 but he was 14th in both BF polls anyway so he wouldn't have been in there.

But one could argue that being a standout player in a thrashing should be worth more that when the whole team is on song.

What is your proposed system?

It’s a pain in the arse to coordinate and keep a tally of votes as it is. The 5-1 system has been tried before. It’s also been a very good guide to selecting the eventual Syd winner, if not the place getters in order.

Lots of people on the board are apathetic to Dumont I notice so I’m not surprised he was so underrated.

I saw this tweeted which illustrates In a simple way why he probably shouldn’t be and is likely to keep improving - maybe he’s not exciting enough for some but if every player chipped away and improved a little every year we’d be in a great place.

Another little jump next year and he’s doing some pretty good numbers.

The improvement in Trent Dumont’s disposals per game, and disposal efficiency, over his first 5 seasons.

Dpls DE
2015 9.8 64.1%
2016 16.9 68%
2017 20.6 66.8%
2018 21.1 69%
2019 23.6 70.1%

His gradual but measurable and steady improvements are why i've really liked him for quite a while. We don't see enough of it with our list in recent years. He's put in a lot of hard work, and I'm glad he's getting recognised for it.

Robbie Tarrant has been so consistent over the past 5 years or so - he so deserves a Syd Barker before he retires. He gets screwed each year by the AA selectors by not being in the AA team. I wonder if we could rig our own award so that he gets one soon.
